Software :: Go Back Method In Grub?

Aug 9, 2010

My laptop is running gentoo linux but I wanted to make my own minimalistic linux distro. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but I need to repartition my hard drive for this. I have the tools to do this (on a cd) but the problem I am encountering is the bios is locked. The bios is locked and it boots from the hard drive first and then the cd-rom drive. I don't have the bios password and the last place I took the laptop to for repair locked the bios, didn't fix the problem, and charged me $60 so they could "look" at it. I fixed the original problem by myself but the bios is still locked and they claim they have no idea how it got locked. Is there any way to make grub "go back" so to speak so that the computer will boot from a cd? I can remove the hard drive and it will boot from the CD but that kinda defeats the purpose.

OpenSUSE Install :: What Download Method Is Best For Downloading Suse 11.3 From Website?

Nov 20, 2010

I searched the faq, I did a search online for this etc. The reason I ask is that suse on the download page of 11.3 states don't download directly since it is very slow and has no check sum. Therefore the iso may be flawed and you have spent 10 hrs trying to download the iso. My "fast" internet through qwest is at 1.5 mbps download so I assume that is why it is so slow to download the iso of 4.7 Gb.Now for the question the download page suggets you use bit torrent since it does the checksum but will download the iso no faster than the direct method. Second is to use check metalink with the addon in Firefox downthemall. I did this and had quite a time getting the iso link for 11.3 to start downloading. I would start downthemall from the Firefox toolbar and I thought wow!!! it downloaded that iso fast, how cool. Well it was not the iso but the website for the download page! At one point I got it to start downloading the iso but came in this morining and it was still going after 17hrs and showed several hours to go. I gave up and deleated it.

This afternoon I just gave in and started the download again using the bit torrent and I am waiting for the download to finish. I did eveything the site indicated but after and hour I noticed under logger it said **** openSuse-11.3-DVD i586 iso: PIECE 2206 FAILED HASH CHECK. It shows this same message from the begining of the download 7hrs ago to the last few minutes on each section. It states it is 75% complete? Is this normal or am I wasting 10 more hours? Sorry if this is not the place for this question but I never had trouble with downloading 11.2 and burning it to the disk. I think I just used the Directlink method and crossed my fingers. It did download ok!

OpenSUSE Install :: Back Up Entire System While Still Login Into SUSE?

Apr 28, 2010

Main reason I am using openSUSE currently is because my Windows system's went bad. I haven't been able to easily restore and will probably have to do clean windows install. I want to make sure my entire openSuse system (application/OS setting/etc) backup so I can easily restore of it fast. Since this type of back takes awhile, I would preferably like do this while I am still logged into SUSE. I am where to disk cloning thing like clonezilla, but looks like I would need turn of my system entirely to get this done.

Currently my SUSE root and home are in a partition with another NTFS partition on my hard drive. I really don't want to use 'dd' to clone the entire hard disk. I would much rather store of required partitions in other locations. Hopefully, there is easy to get this done without too much of effort and time.

SUSE / Novell :: Changing /tmp From It's Own Partition Back To Root Partition?

Jun 8, 2010

I initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

Programming :: Looking For Educational Bash Projects?

Sep 14, 2010

Have you ever seen a hobbyist electonic Kit? They have projects that try to teach what each type of component does. Is there such a thing for Bash? It would tend to be aimed at tasks that are suitable for bash and not attempt to go over the line of what is better suited as a compiled program. Intuitively I think maybe something that timestamps files; when you download them, or anything else that would keep a home PC better organized is practical.

Programming :: Compile (gcc) Using Code From Other Projects?

Jan 16, 2010

I'm trying to write a helper for the mount utility (mount.truecrypt) and there are some things in the util-linux-ng package that would be helpful. For example, in fstab.c, there is a lock_mtab() function. I want to be able to do something like:

Code:

#include "fstab.h"
int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
lock_mtab();

[code]....

But I don't know how to compile it. I was trying (naively) something like:

Code:

$ gcc mount.truecrypt.c fstab.c -o mount.truecrypt

But I guess the problem is fstab needs a whole bunch of other stuff. Should I just build the entire util-linux-ng package and then use the output somehow? If anyone is interested in mount.truecrypt (to be compatible with mount and /etc/fstab) you might be interested in giving me a little bit of guidance. I've got enough code to build the actual truecrypt command thus far. In fact, it's useable, but not robust (ie, doesn't lock the mtab, etc). You can browse the source for util-linux-ng here: [URL] and download a tagged release here:[URL]

Server :: SVN And SSH - Creating Directories For Projects In Repo

Feb 18, 2011

I am setting up an SVN server (svn+ssh) that will be used by students at the university where I work. I was considering in the beginning, one single repository and eventually creating directories for each project inside the repository. It seems to me now, that it is not very secure way of doing things. The directory on the server will be with rights 770 and this means that every student can come on the server and sweep out the whole repository.

Also mistakenly or not, every student can 'svn delete' the whole repository, which could be a nightmare to recover from. An issue might be to create groups and then assign users to groups and then create many repositories and each repository to be assigned with group. This means that I will have to manage tens or hundreds of repositories -- maybe not very common task. What is an optimal solution for this working environment.

Ubuntu :: Video Projects On 3TB USB Drive - Persistent Rsync?

May 30, 2010

I have a slow 3TB usb drive that I keep my video projects on, but when I'm working on a project I want to have the files on my main HD so that the video editing is less painful. So here is my question: is there a way to have a folder on my main computer that syncs files *as they are needed* to my main drive, then when they are edited sync them to the USB drive again?

So if I have a folder with 100 clips on my USB drive, can I sync just the directory listings to the local folder, then when I add a video to my project file and it is read by the video editing software, then just that file is synced to my local folder? Then, when I close the terminal with this app running, or some other signal the local folder is destroyed (all of the files are synced to the USB drive once they are changed).

General :: Organize Open Source Projects In The Community?

May 16, 2010

that guide me about how (what steps should we do) to organize open source projects in the Linux community.Our idea is to organize an open source project of OPENCVOpenCV is a computer vision library originally developed by Intel. It is free for use under the open source BSD license. The library is cross-platform. It focuses mainly on real-time image processing.Our idea is to organize an open source project in the Linux community, that be a point in which programmers using OpenCV can meet, to develop programs to recognize the road lanes.OpenCV can be used to recognize the road lanes, and allow a car drive alone (if you have a camera inside the car and a laptop mother board running Linux and controlling the car's steering wheel).

Here you have some example of what we want to do[URL]Unfortunately, even being free OpenCV many companies as SIEMENS are working in this, trying to develop an autopilot for cars that would cost a fortune and wouldn't be available for everyone (it will be closed and not free - as Linux).We believe in the free software and Linux.Our idea is to organize a community of programmers interested in computer vision and opencv to create computer programs, and to make the first platform in Linux able to recognize the road lanes and allow the cars to drive alone.

Our problem is we don't know how to do that.How do you organize an open source project in the Linux community?How do you get people involved in the project?How do you start from cero?Please, help us to organize a project of this type, to make the first autopilot of the automotive industry, based in Linux
