I have tried to empty the root /tmp folder but instead to empty it I , as it seems, deleted it with rm -rf /tmp as su. Now SUSE does not start anymore.
1. how to repair that and
2. how to empty the tmp fplder.

View 6 Replies View RelatedHow and when it happened I do not know. But some days ago I tried to copy some files from my NTFS disk and I cant. The disk is empty (really it is not). I have 3 NTFS disks on my system and one with Suse on it. Until now I could normally access all my disks. Now I can access them but there are no files/directories on any one of them (as seen from SUSE).And in my fstab there are entries which I do not know how they come there. Here is my fstab file:

I'm using rmdir(), and everything goes ok if the directory is empty, ?how can I remove the entire tree when i have other files or directories in the folder that I want to delete?I've read about using "system(rm....)" but i REALLY want to do this without it, is it possible?

View 14 Replies View RelatedStraight to the problem on my [Ubuntu 9.10].I cannot delete or empty my .Trash-1000 folder on my flash drive. I tried changing permission with chmod but no way, I cannot empty the folder via the Ubuntu main trash option 'Empty Trash'. I read a bunch of threads but no way.Do you know a solution that works to this problem?Even further. Do you know a way to tell nautilus to avoid using that folder in my USB devices and use instead the normal trash folder on my system?

im linux newbie and im trying to build a small cluster using suse 11 and run in parallel fortran by using MPI. I ve made all the preperation (network communication, ssh, sharing using samba etc). I can access the pc's through network, either with their IP's or their hostnames.Now i have to define in one pc (master node) a path to a shared folder where all other clusters will have full access. Usually in windows we can do this by using something like \hostnamesharefolder_name. This haven't work in linuxWhen i access the folder from another pc i.e through nautilus the path is smp:/hostname/sharefolder but i can't use such a path because i think don't recognize the smp:/ . Is there any way to define universal paths where the clusters will look for them in the network

I created a folder --> right click and click on Share --> Check on "Share with Samba(Microsoft Windows)", "Public" and "Writable". Then connect from Windows using //192.168.100.1/sharefolder. It open up but I can only read (no write access as I check on "Writable"). Did I miss something?

I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

When i am adding a user using "useradd -d /home/test test" or "useradd test", it is now creating the home directory, whereas when i am using the graphical mode and going through several menu options, i am getting the home directory.

I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly.The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this

View 2 Replies View RelatedNew Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same).With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above.But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu,which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder.Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

I have also tried rm -f -rrm -f -fIt still dont delete, I have also deleted my user account and made a new one, but the files are still there.

Since those really serve no purpose as far as recovering data from what I can tell, is there a slick way to delete just the empty folders from my /data/lost+found folder, leaving me with just the stuff I truly need to look through?

I would however like to use Banshee, but in Banshee all my iPod 5G-music is displayed under the video folder, while the music folder is empty. Any idea why?And also I have several albums with different artists on them, which gets spread out on i.e. 10 single albums even though they belong to the same album. This happens - as far as I can tell - after I've accessed the iPod from Rhythmbox (which is part of the reason why I wanna use Banshee).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

upon browsing the home folder in my ubuntu system, i came across a hidden cache folder..
it occupied around 700 mb of space..and im falling short of space..
can i delete the contents in the folder? are they safe to delete?
