SUSE / Novell :: DNS And 127.0.0.2 Address / Loopback Device Lo Has Two Addresses?
Apr 19, 2010
Were experimenting with deploying SUSE 10 SP3 systems and adding them to a Windows domain and DNS. Oddly, when we register in DNS, it gets registered under two address: the real IP address, and the address 127.0.0.2. Also, an ip addr command shows that the loopback device lo has two addresses: 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.2.
The above behavior is just on SP3. On SUSE 10 SP2, the lo device has only the 127.0.0.1 address, and the system is able to register correctly in DNS.
Do you know what the 127.0.0.2 address signifies, or how to get rid of it?

I have configured loopback IP address on my server as (10.10.10.10). My LAN card physical IP address is 10.10.10.20. I dont want my loopback IP address to broadcast the IP & arp. How can i achieve it? Right now i see the problem that both 10.10.10.10 & 10.10.10.20 ip address is broadcasted by same MAC & I have 10.10.10.10 is already with some other host too.

I have an iso image I'm mounting-
# mount -o loop /root/image.iso /media/cdrom in SLES10 (and SLES9), "mount" displays the name of the iso file:
# mount
...
/root/image.iso on /media/cdrom type iso9660 (rw,loop=/dev/loop0)
However, in SLES11, "mount" now displays the loop device rather than the filename:
# mount
...
/dev/loop0 on /media/cdrom type iso9660 (rw)
This is somewhat less than useful. Is there any way to display the filename rather than the loop device?

We have a SuSE/SLES 9 server that boots from a fibre channel card, using volumes from a NetApp filer.
We previously had the server booting from the LUNs on the filer, but after some tinkering around with the fibre channel BIOS, we have the situation where the LUNS seem to be mounted, the OS boots, starts to initialise everything but then stalls, saying:
We have tried loads of combinations of settings in the BIOS and fibre channel BIOS without any success or any idea what may have caused the error.

I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

how to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly.The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

I did have that problem in previous versions of SUSE, but somehow, I solved that. I cant remember what I did then.

I've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.

I have extracted the WebCamStudio java application into a folder in my Fedora 13 x86_64 installation. I can run WebCamStudio with the command java -jar "WebcamStudio.jar".
I can successfully select sources and view preview etc. However, the bottom status line permanently states "no output". There is no vloopback device to select in Cheese, camstream, Skype, AMsn etc. Does anyone know how I can get the loopback device to work?
I have added my username to the group "video"
I only have /dev/video0 - should there be another module for the loopback device?

I tried using losetup but failed:
Code:
If I loop the file entirely it works, but that's not helping me. (I'm actually keeping the C option for last since shell programming is less restrictive.

RunningGnome. Luckily I saved the old hosts file and copied it back and all is now well. But I'd like to understand why, particularly as I will need to change myhostname in the future.
As configured:
/etc/hosts (yes my hostname is "dummyName" that I will need to change later)
127.0.0.1 dummyName localhost.localdomain localhost

New Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

I was wondering if it is possible to create a growing image for a loopback device. Like a file that you create that will grow with the data that is placed on it instead of a file that has to be the size of the entire file system?

But I can not find it.
I also tried

I'm kind of new to programming in Linux & c/c++. I'm currently writing a FileManager using Ubuntu Linux(10.10) for Learning Purposes. I've got started on this project by creating a loopback device to be used as my virtual hard disk. After creating the loop back hard disk and mounting it has the following configuration.
Code: $> sudo fdisk -l /dev/loop0
Disk /dev/loop0: 10 MB, 10977280 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Disk /dev/loop0 doesn't contain a valid partition table Now what I want to do is develop a c++ program to read & write files to this loop back device,which I'm using to simulate an actual hard disk,at the blocks & sectors level. So far I've come up with the following code. But I'm still unable to read files from the hard disk one block at a time.
Code: #include <iostream>
#include <stdio.h>
using namespace std;
int main() {
char block[512]; int length=0;
cout<<"Implementation of the File Handler Read Method..."<<endl;
FILE *f = fopen("/dev/loop0", "r");
if(f == NULL) {
cout<<"Error In Opening the HardDisk File Retuning Error..."<<endl; return -1; }
//Read One Block of Data to Buffer length = fread(block, 1, sizeof(block), f);
/* Do something with the data */ cout<<"Length : "<<length<<endl;
return 0; }
When I run this Program All what I get is the message for NULL. "Error In Opening the HardDisk File Retuning Error...". So I could open the loopback device as a file an access it at the sectors & block level.

to get flash 10 working. I just decided to update to 11.3. Bought a 8.0GB USB stick to copy files to. USB DISK icon on visible on Desktop. mounted on /media/USB DISK Clicking on device properties it is read only. I can change permissions but that is only temporary. Looking under my computer it is formated as vfat device name is /dev/sdb
I can't copy any files to it. Can't see in terminal even being root as well. Almost started the Partitioner in Yast but didn't want to accidently crash the system. That WOULD be my luck Can't find a way to format it via GUI interface. Can I use something like fdisk in terminal. I guess I need to format it as ext3.
