Red Hat :: Scp Not Asking For Password At Startup?

Apr 9, 2010

I am writing a script that runs on boot that needs to use scp to get a file. If I run this script after the system boots it works great, scp asks for a password like it should. When this script runs during startup, scp does not ask for a password and so it fails to authenticate. If I use read or mount a LUKS volume at startup the system waits for input like it should. Only scp fails to wait for input.Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to stop it? Switching to key-based authentication is not an option.

Ubuntu :: Prompted For Username And Password At Startup?

Aug 30, 2010

not for the typical username and password that I use to log into my computer. It's actually prompting me, upon startup/reboot to have me insert my name and password, in what appears to be the command prompt. I am still a noob with Ubuntu and Linux in general, so I have no idea what I did to make this happen. It's not terrible and zomg if it doesn't get fixed I'll die, but it is slightly inconvenient to have to "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start" every time I reboot my computer. Anyone know what I have to do to fix this?I would also like to apologize if this has been covered in another topic, but I could not find anything

Ubuntu Servers :: Script To Restart And Bypass Password On Startup?

Feb 7, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 as a web/ftp/etc server. I like to work on stuff from remote locations and have set it up to be accessed it with the external IP address by my laptop. The problem is that if I'm at a remote location and tell it to restart, when it boots up it won't log me on unless I enter the password, but I can't remote access it until I'm logged in.So, is there a command or script that I can run that will tell it to restart and bypass entering a login password?I'm only looking for something to bypass it ONCE per command/script, NOT to disable my password.

Ubuntu :: Change Root Password - Typing A Password, No Characters Show Up?

Mar 9, 2010

I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password? To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal, which then asks for the password. What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not.I've found a bunch of different sites on the Internet that explain how to change the root password, but none of them seem to work for my specific work station.

I've got Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. In the GRUB boot menu, I can choose to boot normal or in recovery mode (I'm led to believe older versions don't have this option).I've tried typing # sudo passwrd into Terminal, but I already have a root password set up apparently, so I can't change it there.

Software :: Password Command Doesn't Recognize Valid Password

Nov 23, 2010

I migrated an old SuseLinux 10 box to Debian (Lenny) a couple months ago, and apparently no one noticed you can't change your password. Root can do it because passwd doesn't ask root for a password, but no one else can (although they can log in, passwd doesn't recognize their login password when they attempt to set a new password and it asks).I changed authentication to use blowfish when I setup the server (because the SuseLinux 10 system used it) and apparently the passwd command doesn't work with that. Apparently I need to update another configuration file or possibly get a different program to update the passwd file if I use blowfish. Any ideas?

The weird thing is that it can generate a blowfish hash to set a new password, but apparently can't generate one to authenticate the user.something changed recently and it is no longer generating a blowfish hash when setting a new password. It is generating a hash with only 13 characters. And I can clearly see that many users have changed their passwords.

OpenSUSE Network :: Login Uses Local Password Instead Of Nis Password?

Jul 2, 2011

I have setup a nis server and client. At first I didn't have a local user defined on the client. The client then used the user and passwords from NIS, so that was ok.

The problem then is, that when the server is down, I couldn't login to my client anymore. So I created a local user with the same name on the client but with a different password (after I shut the nis server down, if nis server was on, I couldn't create a local user with the same name). I then edited etc/nssswitch.conf as follows:

Code:
# (like no NIS server responding) then the search continues with the
# next entry.
#
# Legal entries are:
#
# compat Use compatibility setup

[Code].....

If NIS server is on: client has to login with the nis password If NIS server is down: client has to login with the local password (as fallback)

However the actual behaviour is that I can only login with the local password now. The NIS pasword doesn't seem to be used anymore.
