Red Hat :: Regarding The Specifics Of RHEL 6 Licensing?
Apr 5, 2011
[As RHEL licensing has changed over time, please don't attempt to answer these questions unless either you are confident of the answer, or you have recent experience with these items.]
We are virtualizing our data center. We have a total of 23 HP blade units (2-sockets each) that will have hundreds of potential RHEL 6 virtual machines running on them within VMWare. All of these VMs (Set 'X') will need to have rhn_register run on them so that patches and updates can be routinely applied. A subset of X - call it set 'A' - of these VMs will require 12x5 support (Standard Support) from Redhat. Another subset of X - call it set B - which is mutually exclusive from set A, will require 24x7 support. For any given server, we can not yet identify which will be in Set A, Set B, or just in X alone.
If we decided we had no need for phone or web support, but wanted to be able to use RHN for patches, would purchasing one Self-Support entitlement for each VM suffice? We are probably looking at the Unlimited-number-of-guest-OS subscriptions. Is there any way to purchase Premium (24x7) support for some VMs and Standard (12x5) for others? Does the count have to be decided ahead of time, or can we decide on the fly?
In other words, can we wait until a VM crashes over the weekend to call Redhat and say "We need this VM on premium support" ? The motivation for this inquiry is that we don't have the budget to put 23 blade units' worth of VMs under premium, or even standard support. I'm curious how Redhat manages this, since subscriptions are done per physical server, not per VM. (When you're dealing with the unlimited-number-of-VM pricing.)

I successfully edited the .bashrc file to get ruby version manager (rvm) working. Now I would like to turn that setting into an alias so that if i type the word 'ruby' into the terminal it not only goes to the rvm settup but also defaults to my webdev folder which is in my user home directory and also exicutes a command that will open up gedit ready to be used as the text editor for editing the .rb files. Can this be done i would settle for some added code for the 'if then' statement: so far it looks like this:
[Code]...
I don't want to mess with the default setup on this system too much and think things could get out of hand if i am not careful. So am cautious about doing anything at this stage. I wonder if it is possibel thought to setup that whole 'if then' statement as an 'alias'. I read a few referances to alias and looked in the manual like any good newby should but am needing your help please. getting out of the MSwindows mind set and into the linux logic is not so easy but is a great experience

A client has sent me an RHEL 5.1 box for me to do some work on, but it's not registered with Red Hat. This is causing me problems, because it's a minimal installation, and I need some more dev software. My immediate reaction was to install various bits (emacs, and so on) from my Centos 5(.0) DVD.The base RHEL system only had one (disabled) repo entry,so I added a yum DVD repo entry in yum.conf.d.
This looked good to start with, but it doesn't work. Something in RHEL's pirut/yum/rpm/whatever is getting confused, and can't work out what is/isn't installed.
Question - how do you maintain an unregistered RHEL box? Has RH done something to make life difficult? Is my problem simply that I'm using a Centos 5.0 DVD, instead of Centos 5.1? Am I stuck with downloading lots of rpms from the net and doing everything manually? I really don't want to do that.

I have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

Environment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.
So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.

I am new to RHEL. I am trying to get into VNC viewer but i am unable to do so.
I have 2 issues.
1. How do i see other desktops using vnc from RHEL.
2. How do i access RHEL using vnc from other desktops.
For the 2nd point i have done the steps what ever i could find i.e,
- Putting a passwd for the vnc server
-addding ports from 5900-5904
-editing the xorg.conf file
-restarting the machine.
I did get a successful connection from a windows machine into the RHEL server but then the server hangs and keyboard does not work so i have to restart it.

I'm testing using RHEL 5 and Squid 2.6.STABLE6, with using 2 NIC which is 192.168.1.200 (ETH0/INTERNET) and 192.168.3.1 (ETH1/LAN). I already setup my DNS in /etc/resolv.conf !
- When I put ETH1-off ETH0-on, I could connect to internet, but when i put ETH1-on ETH0-on, I couldn't connect to internet. Why ? Did i should route the traffic from ETH1 to ETH0 and vice versa ?
- I follow each step in this link and edit line :
Code:
acl intranet src 192.168.3.0/24
, and also put this command in iptables :
Code:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp dport 80 -j REDIRECT to-port 3128

trying to install Veritas Storage Foundation HA on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.(64 bit)OS was fresh installed (haven't updated anything yet). I tried to start the VSF installer as stated in the documentations. Change directory to cdrom and where the files are located and typed ". ./installer" It is supposed to launch the installer but instead, the terminal window closed itself. I think I'm missing something here. Don't think it's the media problem. Either I run it from window by double-clicking or run from terminal window, it closes and nothing happens.
