I'm going to be going on a trip for a while with probably little/no access to a wireless access point (that I'd be able to use), so I'm looking for a possible wireless broadband provider that may officially support Linux, or at least whose hardware will be supported, even if the company doesn't officially support Linux.
I've looked at Sprint's instructions for setting up their USB modems on Linux, but it's awfully rooted in Ubuntu (I'm using Arch on my laptop), and it requires the use of "KPPP", which is not in the Arch repos.
Am I SOL? I refuse to sink down to having to re-install Windows on this thing for the sole purpose of being able to use mobile broadband services. I'd like to keep this machine 100% Linux...to me, putting Windows back on just for internet is like giving up and letting MS and the ISPs win.

I am using Fedora 13. and had bought MTS Mblaze Mobile Broadband device. One installer comes with this device for Fedora, I have installed it.There were some issues while starting this application on fedora. But after seeing some threads for SELinux, it had been solved. Now, when I run this software, a window appears. If i clicked connect, it does show connecting and once connected automatically firefox opens.
But i am not able to access internet. After some time software shows device is in sleep mode due to inactivity. Network connectivity icon on launch panel on fedora shows network is connected.I had similar problem with Mandriva 10..

I am using TATA Photon usb internet stick. It's a Huawei USB modem. OpenSuSe detects and shows it as mobile broadband. But can not connect to internet. Any1 has configured similar device before? It shows me in "network manager" but no option to active/connect it. In Windows I got auto dialer for Photon. And customer care says no support for Linux.

I have been using Ubuntu since 7.04. It is really an amazing experience. I have some 8.10 machines which I use for my students and i don't want to change it right now to different version. On the other hands I want to install USB Modem (Tata Photon+) on Ubuntu 8.10. I have seen its working fine on Ubuntu 9.04 and even better with Ubuntu 10.04.
How to install drivers in Ubuntu 8.10 for proper support with Tata Photon. right now my usb modem is detected as usb storage. I have also tried the usb-switchmode stuff following some articles available on net. But with no real success.
I want to know the exact difference in 8.10, 9.04 and 10.04 as far as usb modem driver installation is concerned.
Or can I configure Ubuntu 8.10 in such a way that I can use USB Modem (Tata Photon) like we do in Ubuntu 10.04.

I'm running ubuntu 10.04. I have a newly purchased TATA Photon+ Internet connection which supports Windows and Mac. On the Internet I found a article saying that it could be configured on Linux. I followed the steps to install it on Ubuntu from this link text. I am still not able to get online
Also, it is very slow, but I was told that I would see speeds up to 3.1MB.
I dont have wvdial installed and cannot install it from apt as I'm not connected to internet

Any one tried to connecting the internet using Tataphoton+?
Device details:
HUAWEI Mobile Broadband
Model: HUAWEI EC 152
According to manual, the device should be detected as /dev/ttyACM0. But no device of this name is created. 'lsusb' identifies the device.
The required packages like wvdial, wvstream are installed. I have tried all the possible ways. Also created /dev/ttyACM0 with # mknod /dev/ttyACM0 c 166 0
Link to manual, in case any one wants to read it [url]
Just want to connect using GNU/linux any how. Can't live with WINDOWS

Im able to use nm-applet just fine to setup broadband card. Its a Sprint Sierra 598u. Im running Fedora 10 KDE version. Anyone know how to get it working? i tried the setup process but all it tells me is set up GPS or CDMA so i go CDMA for mine, but then it has some default name, and no providers, as the UBUNTU version did at least...i setup best i can but then after closing configs, i go to nm-applet icon in bottom-right and it doesn't show the mobile broadband connection, also any wireless connections don't work for some reason, but DO show up. just wont connect (which i got every so often when using ubuntu on the machine, was usually a switch off or restart away from fine

Since my recent re-conversion into Ubuntu, I noticed Network-Manager now has mobile broadband support out of the box. Splendid!
I've been using my Huawei (Vodafone) modem since around two weeks, and so far it's been great, except for a little detail: sometimes, them modem simply won't work. I plug it in, "cd" drive (where the Vodafone Mobile Connect files are) shows up, but no "Vodafone" on Network-Manager.
I believe this has something to do with settings the modem may leave behind after each use, but I'm quite newb, so.

I am trying to use the HUAWEI E1756C USB stick to connect to the internet. Installing usb_modeswitch and usb_modeswitch-data allowed networkmanager to "recognize" the stick and set up a mobile broadband connection.
The result is that NM succeeded in connecting (one of every five attempts) but firefox does not surf, nor emails can be downloaded etc. Just like if not being connected. The USB modem shows the steady blue LED as connected.
A NM issue? I have tried disabling NM control and tried with PPP clients like NMTSMON, wvdial and even Sakis3g. All with the same results. They seem to connect and show flux up and downloaded but no surfing.
resolf.conf shows is pretty much empty and no DNS there.
The working settings in Window$ are:
Same settings with Sakis3G, or NMTSMON or NM result in connection with no action from applications that use the internet.
I have had a similar issue with WLAN each time I change to a different network. I solve that by forcing to update the DHCP. I mean using -su dhcpd wlan0
But attempts like dhcpcd ttyUSB0 or dhcpcd ttyS0 get the same result. So no idea if this is an DHCP, or DNS or another issue.
My box is an ASUS EEEPC 2005H netbook with OpenSuSE 11.2 and KDE

I have a Sony TZ270N running Ubuntu 10.04 splendidly. The Sprint Mobile Broadband works great, but it's a bit cumbersome to activate. Specifically, to get it to work I need to:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/wwanpower
sleep 5
echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/wwanpower
Then I wait another five seconds, right-click on the networking icon, choose "Enable mobile broadband", then left-click on the networking icon, and choose "Connect to Sprint Connection". I do this multiple times a day, and it's just a bit of a pain, especially when in a hurry. Accordingly, I'd like to script it so I can do the whole thing with a single command.
I've already put the above echo statements into a script and it works great; is there any way to script the actual start of the PPP session itself -- with the caveat that I'd like the networking icon to accurately reflect the latest state?
(In other words, I don't want to bypass the networking icon and just launch the PPP session in the background -- I want it to show that I'm connected, and still let me manage the connection via the icon after connected.)
