IIm running several Webservers on CentOS 5.2. Due to the Hosting-Platform I use, it is recommended that there will not be CentOS 5.3-Updates installed. So I searched the net a lot now but didn't find a propper solution. Is there a way to tell yum only install patches and updates for version 5.2 and not to upgrade to 5.3?

I have CentOS 5.5 installed on my Dell D600. This release includes SAMBA 3.0.
Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?
A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0
I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.
Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?

I am relatively new to the Linux System (8 months). I am having issues after upgrading the Scientific Linux 6 kernel from its current 2.6.x version to the latest version that SL6 has available. The issue is that once I install the upgrade and reboot, the internet becomes extremely laggy when scrolling on web pages, so much so that you get a ripple like effect as your scrolling. Which doesn't occur in the current kernel i am using.
Current Kernel is: 2.6.32-71.18.2.el6
New Kernel RPM update is: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6
I wish I could figure out the problem but I am having trouble identifying what exactly the current kernel has that the new one doesn't that would cause the internet lag. I have read other topics with similar kernel update problems, but none have expressed an internet problem & only an internet problem from a kernel update.

I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

I have a very unusual [and most likely unsupported] upgrade path I need to take.
I have two servers, both Dell PE1800's that I need to upgrade.
One of them is a Fedora Core 4 (x86) box and the second is RHEL5 x86_64.
I need to do an in-place upgrade to CentOS 5.3 without having to reinstall from scratch and keeping my downtime to an absolute minimum. Each of these servers has about 10TB of data stored and I really don't want to have to reformat and restore from backps.
How can I do this?

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

I'm quite new to Linux/CentOS. I installed LAMP from official CentOS repositories and I'm wondering why the PHP (5.1.6) or MySQL (5.0.77) versions are so old. Why there is now the latest versions available.
Is it recommended to use these versions or should I update to the newest one - if so could you plesae provide me some links to official repositories&tutorials.

As I use a (CentOS) Linux computer and a Windows XP PC side by side, I decided to install Synergy, a software to use one computer's mouse and keyboard on neighboring computers too. However, Add/Remove Software installed Synergy Plus 1.3.4-1 instead. That mostly works... Except there's a known bug on Synergy, see bug 2955158: if you use Synergy Server on CentOS to control the Windows computer, as soon as you touch the keyboard when focus is in Windows, it freezes. (I can still ssh into CentOS, but its GUI is unusable.)
Well, Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 inherited that bug. That makes it, for that purpose, useless. So I uninstalled Synergy-Plus and tried to install the lower version, Synergy 1.3.1-7, as per the recommendation in the comment on that bug report, except: I ended up with Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 again.I tried again from the command line, using yum, to no avail: yum told me Synergy 1.3.1-7 was obsolete and replaced by Synergy-Plus.I had to exclude Synergy-Plus from installation with yum, with "-x 'synergy-plus-*'", to finally get Synergy 1.3.1-7.
There, I don't have this problem. I do think that making people upgrade to Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 is a mistake. It's still not perfect. With Windows as the Synergy server (and using the Windows keyboard), if I try to type a ">" (on an AZERTY keyboard), it types "" instead); and I seem to have an issue to copy text from Windows into CentOS.With the roles swapped, using CentOS as the Synergy server and with the CentOS keyboard, I can copy from Windows. I'm still not sure what is the cause of this.
