Fedora :: Choosing A Version Control System

Sep 11, 2009

I want to set up a very simple version control system in my own computer, which only I will use. I want to use it mainly for latex files, not programming. I basically want to use it as a smart backup system and to keep track of past versions, but I don't need merging, patching, etc... My typical needs are the following:Work on a file many times and committ the changes every couple of days.Every now and then, try something new, and do it on a new branch. If it doesn't work, go back to the original one.

Take a look at a previous version (often a binary file, say a pdf or dvi file).I have used git so far, for no special reason, but I haven't been able to get comfortable with it, specially since it only handles text files efficiently (I think). My main issue is with point 3 above, I haven't found a way (maybe there's just no way) of pointing to a previous version of a file and opening it in an external program. Would CVS or SVN or any other version control system allow me to do this easily?

Fedora :: Feature - Transparent Local Version Control System For Documents

Nov 13, 2009

I think a version control system should be integrated by default into the user's documents directory. Any time a file is saved, the app would check to see if there is another file by the same name, and if there is, make a hidden copy of the previous version with name such as ".filename.[datestamp]" . This would be similar to what gEdit already does, but at a broader level.

A more robust system would include controls for watching more directories. It would also show comparisons with previous versions of the document. Being file based, it wouldn't care if unneeded backup files are destroyed.

If file space is an issue, backup files would only contain the differences between the next and previous versions. This would mean, however, that back-up files would be useless if a few are irretrievable.

Obviously, users would be able to turn this app on or off, if they don't need/desire this feature.

Fedora :: Is There Any Way To Avoid This While Installing Software Via Yum?

May 28, 2011

I wasn't sure how to describe this in the topic title, but every time I install software with yum (su -c 'yum install package'), I have to download repository information (I think? I'm not really sure what it is, tbh). I checked to see if I had unrar installed or not (obviously I didn't), so I decided to install it. The download is 106k, yet I had to sit there for a while downloading whatever it was that yum was downloading. Is there any way I can skip this? Typically it's not a big deal to wait a minute until it's done, but sometimes I just want to get my program installed and get back to business. Most of my Linux career has been spent with apt-get instead of yum, so I don't fully understand why the process takes longer with yum than it does with apt-get.

Fedora :: 13 - LDFLAGS - Avoid Re-compiling The Source And Only Run The Rpm Packaging Stuff With The Already Built Things

Jul 19, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 13 on my system, and I'm still in the process of setting it up as I like. As the FCEU and snes9x versions on rpmfusion are old (fceultra 0.98, snes without GUI), I wanted to compile my own RPMs Everything went OK, but I found myself having to build the packages several times because of missing LDFLAGS. I got several errors like "symbol X missing, it was found on Y so you may want to add Y to the linker flags", which I fixed by modifying & exporting LDFLAGS.

So, 2 questions:

1.- why are the LDFLAGS missing? How can I avoid having to set them up manually?
2.- There should be a way to avoid re-compiling the source and only run the rpm packaging stuff with the already built things (some option like 'don't build, only package'). how can I do that?

BTW, I can share my (pretty much hacked) .spec files if you are interested

Fedora :: Volume Control Keys On Keyboard Don't Control Volume Anymore

Oct 29, 2009

Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer. They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.

This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?

Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. Is anyone else experiencing this?I can adjust the volume with Kmix 3.5 or GNOME Volume Control V2.1

Server :: Looking For Gateway With Central Control System

Jun 4, 2010

Basically I'm working as part time administrator in a company, and still am at college. To keep the story short, the company I work with used to have a linux gateway, namely Untangle. We tried to upgrade to E-Box, which is supposed to have more options than Untangle, but it doesn't seem to work as it should. What I'm trying to ask here is this. I need a gateway system that handles QoS, Content filtering, Mail Filtering, DNS, Wan failover / load balancing, LOGS (important), Firewall and maybe the handling of separate users or groups. The ideal solution would be one that like the E-box, has a central control system, without the need to adjust code in CLI for configuration. I have some experience on CentOS and Fedora, so I am able to do some configuration, like installing Samba, DHCP and VNC.

General :: Get Back The Control Of The Screen/keyboard On System?

Aug 24, 2011

I have a Linux system running (Debian). It is working perfectly from a remote point of view. I can ssh in it, it has the imap running correctly, and a couple of kvm systems running (I can also ssh to them). Well, it works!

But when I go in front of the keyboard/mouse/screen there's nothing. No way to switch between the consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F# (X is not running on this system). The screen is desperately black. But the screen does not go to sleep mode, it still has its green led on! I guess it means that the graphics card still sends the H and V syncs correctly (VGA connection).

Is there a process that is blocking the display and prevents me from getting the control?

Note: Last time I used the console, it was in console 1. Ctrl+Alt+F1.

General :: Does Versions Control System Work On Server Or Per Website

May 26, 2011

I tried hard so that I can stay away from version control but in almost good job specifications, I find version control as requirement. So I thought I had to start from somewhere. I always tried to read it but haven't got much luck with it. So I have few problems to ask. I am confused and I really want to know how can I use version control in my context and how will my working environment change with it.

I have Linux VPS Server. I use capnel/whm to create sites in php/joomla. So is version control a software or script which I can install on my linux box like ./configure. Or I have to install it on every site like any framework I use Dreamweaver to edit files via FTP. Now if I install version control then do I still use same method to edit files or then method gets chnaged What about the database like MySQL will it stays same or its also version controlled Will version control make my system slow and how much space it uses on my server.
