Red Hat / Fedora :: Creating Trusted Connection Between Machines For Shared Accou

Jan 20, 2011

I tried to create trusted connection between two machines (named "master" and "node1") for shared account, but no luck. what I had done are as follows:

1.create user account "tester" in "master"
2.set NFS server configuration to have RW for /home/tester for "node1"
3.create user account "tester" without creating home dir in "node1" with same userID and groupID as the one in "master"
4.create dir "homester" in "node1" and mount to "master" (mount -t nfs master:/home/tester /home/tester).in master node: ssh-keygen -t rsa
5.generate authorized_keys in "node1" (details not shown)

but it is not working, if I don't use home/tester as shared dir, and two machines have their own /home/tester , the trusted connection gets created and scp works fine. can we create trusted connection for shared account, if yes, how and did I do miss anything.

Fedora :: Creating Local Shared Directory

Dec 18, 2009

I have recently installed Fedora 12 on a desktop PC and as my first experience of Linux, I am really impressed. I have now installed several packages and have reached a point where I would like to share the PC with other user (family members in the same house). My question seems so basic I am almost embarrassed to ask it but could some one explain the best way to create a local shared directory that could be used to store files accessible to everyone (e.g. music, photos, videos, documents etc.)There will be three users and as it is a family PC, they will all have full access.

Reading posts from various forums, I am little confused about what is the best way to proceed (i.e. what is Linux best practice). The simpler of the two methods is to simply make the directory using the mkdir command, followed by the chmod command to assign full access rights. Fore example if the local shared directory is called 'share'. The alternative approach assigns a group, a group administrator etc and then adds users to the group.

Can I specify to store the Ubuntu Evolution Calendar in a shared folder & access that from Xubuntu Evolution? In that case, how do I specify the calendar file locations for each installation? Is there a better way of achieving a calendar shared between the two machines?

Networking :: Can't See Shared Folders Between Two Linux Machines And One Windows Machine

May 10, 2010

I am trying to share folders between my laptop and desktop. The desktop runs Ubuntu 10 ,and the laptop I'm dual-booting between pclinux OS and another OS. I can't see either machine from either machine. The desktop shows a "windows network" when I go to the network location in file manager. When I run PC Linux, I can't even see the desktop which runs Linux as well, and I've tried to configure shares in the PC Linux OS Control Center, but I obviously failed. I installed gshare on the Ubuntu machine, and PC Linux has GUI tools(whew!) to configure NFS, SMB, and Deb-whatever the other one's name is. As a new convert, I've went into properties, permissions, because it's what I'm familiar with. I just wish someone would tell me if I should maybe just go back to the other OS or not, as I've had so many problems every since trying the switch. I really like this system, but it seems as if you need to be some kind of computer programmer or something to be able to do the most basic things (install software, wireless, share files). I'm not a stupid person, and what I lack in knowledge, I compensate for in desire to learn.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't View Printer Shared On CUPS Server From Other Machines On LAN?

Nov 1, 2010

I have been working through setting up a CUPS server on my Dell Dimension 2000 which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have the server set up and the printer added and have gone through all of the steps the tutorials suggest to get the printer to be viewed on the network (set it to shared, allow other machines to view shared printers, etc). However, I can't find this printer on any of the other machine on my LAN (one machine running mac os x the other running Ubuntu 10.10).

Programming :: Creating C++ Shared Libraries

Apr 4, 2010

I have 2 questions... I couldn't find answers by Googling (more precisely, by Blackling) and in GCC documents, so I'm asking here.

1. There are 2 flags for position independent code, -fpic and -fPIC. All the examples I read use -fPIC... so when is -fpic useful and what is the difference?

2. Some tutorials use "g++ -shared" while others use "ld" for the creation of the shared library. Why? Does it matter which method I use? Is there a difference? Why does nobody mention both options?

Ubuntu :: Creating A Shared FAT32 Partition

Oct 3, 2010

I have done quite a bit of searching and browsing, but I can't find a good step by step guide to do this. I am guessing I need to figure out how to use fdisk?

Is there a way to add my own trusted services for the firewall?

Other recommended ways to do that? Or just write a simple shell script?

Ubuntu Networking :: Creating Shared Folders- No 'testparm' Directory

Jul 14, 2011

I need to share some files from my Ubuntu 10.10 box to others on my home network so I created a shared folder, right-clicked it and chose "Sharing Options", chose "Share This Folder" and then I was told that additional software is needed to enable sharing. I agreed and software was downloaded and installed. But when I clicked "Create Share" button and told Nautilus to automatically add permissions for others to access my folder, I was slapped with an error message saying "Failed to execute child process "testparm" (no such file or directory).
So how to proceed and get sharing working again? I installed Samba afterwards via Synaptic and assigned the folder for sharing, but I don't see the special "arrows-both-ways" sign for this folder.

Ubuntu Servers :: MySql Connection Delay With Windows Machines?

Mar 9, 2011

At first I thought the Delay was normal. After looking around it seems that it's not true. I made a post here. The Problem seems to be related to DNS.

The Server in Question is not Online (as in on the web), all machines are on local ethernet. From What I understand DNS is to mask the IP like a named variable for each IP. I am still figuring out the ins and outs of a linux server. DNS is something I have little or no grasp over. So I need help in setting up the DNS for this scenario case. All guides I have seen seem to be for web servers which is where I stop reading and look for other guides. I have webmin and Bind9 installed on the server.

Ubuntu :: Shared Internet Connection 10.04 - Cannot Get The XBox Connected

Jul 11, 2010

I just got a new XBox 360, and I would like to get it connected to the internet.

I cannot run hardline Ethernet to it, as the nearest line is across the house.

I have, in the past and on friends machines, had success setting up a shared internet connection from my Ubuntu box to the XBox in question. I would always follow this guide, and it would work right away. [url]

Recently, I have purchased a new wifi router. This has changed the DHCP makeup of my home network from 192.xxx.xxx.x numbers to 10.0.0.x. I dont know why, but thats how the Netgear router set things up. I have reserved addresses 10.0.0.(2-4) for specific computers because of remote access needs, anything above 10.0.0.5 is empty.

Following the guide that I linked above, I cannot get the XBox connected.

I believe that the fact that the rest of the network is listed under 10.x.x.x may be the culprit, as the DCHP server on MY computer would be assigning the same Local IP as the other devices on the network. (I.E. Giving the XBox 10.0.0.2 and my computer 10.0.0.2)

To clarify how my network is connected; this is how the network is setup:

Internet/Phone line ---> Verizon Westell DSL modem in 'bridged mode' (IP 192.168.x.x) ----> Netgear WGR614v10 Wireless (IP 10.0.0.1) ----> Computer connected via wifi (10.0.0.x) ====> Shared connection to XBox (IP ? supposedly 10.0.0.x)

Somewhere between the computer and the shared connection, The xBox is getting lost, and cannot connect. The troubleshooting shows that it could connect to the network, but it cannot access the internet as a whole.
