i'm wondering which scripting language is better for distro related activity such as cron jobs , startup scripts and similar things.why is bash mostly used ? is it because of efficiency ?what about perl , python or php as potential successors to bash ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to install a very light linux distribution. Light enough to be an host running virtualbox (or vmware player) and then a linux virtual machine of choice on it. Occasionally I could be in needs of running a windows distribution.
The reason why I would like to do this is that I am a developer. I found much convenient to prepare my development environment and run it from machine to machine. Rather than reinstalling a distribution and set it up each time I buy a new laptop.
Do you think it's possible ? The alternative could be to make a kind of linux image and install on a brand new PC, but I don't know how to do that and what are the downside of it.
I'm looking for some advice on choosing the proper distribution for building a hardware/software development environment.
My main field of interest would be:
- HDL (VHDL mainly)
- FPGA/CPLD (synthesis, simulation etc)
- CSystemC
- Tcl scripting
- network hardware applications development (FPGA-based network processors i.e.)
Key (or nice to have at least) system features would be:
- large, stable and willing to help community (especially the large developer part of which would be welcomed)
- support for wide spectrum of development tools (proprietary and open source)
- bunch of docs, tutorials, guides, hints for devel's

Basically I do NOT want to go into programming/developing as I don't feel it's my cup of tea (and also may be it sort of boggles me). Well I have been interested in programming for a while, and just found out about Linux and Unix. I started out with Java, but now I know I bunch: Flash, C++, C and others. I was working on a mac so I made a few flash games then started to work on iPhone games. I was board one day and I found out about Unix and I thought that would be something else to try.So in an attempt to learn about Unix I have been reading different articles about it, and have heard of using different languages in one program. The article I was reading didn't give any examples, and it assumed the reader has programmed Unix before.
So how do you write programs in multiple languages, which languages would you use, and why would you want to do that?
I have recently graduated from uni and during my time there I have developed an interest in HDL, specifically Verilog. As my current job doesn't lend itself to doing anything in verilog so I decided to keep myself sharp by designing a 32 bit processor that is similar to (but not the same as) the MIPS processor it will certainly be RISC. While starting work on it I have decided to start a blog detailing what I have done including the source file as I am entering my work into the wide world I think it needs a licence but I am not looking to make any money or even to derive any fame from what I'm doing. Like I said the main reason to do it is to keep me active in using HDLs.
I hope to gain from the blog suggestions for alternative(better) ways to do what I am doing, for people to use what I have done as an example of a medium sized project in verilog and to force me to have some form of documentation on my project. That's enough self publication to the question. Is the GPL (either version 2 or 3) applicable to work in HDL as it is not a traditional programming language but shares many of the same features? It certainly does not feel like I should use a CC license. I'm not sure this is the correct forum for this question but it seems most applicable.
I was wondering about a package that can be used to write and compile/run programs in different programming languages. I was also wondering how possible it is to program in Visual Basic 2010 in openSUSE if at all.

We are, however, completely new to programming and (x)html. We have a few (what we think are) interesting ideas for dynamic websites.Ideally we would like to develop our own course of study to get to the point where we have a basic understanding of programming so that our adventures in the programming of a dynamic website would be possible. Much of what we need learn to do is the following: use daily updated public-domain data from several other sites, manipulate that data algorithmically, which would then yield updating output on our site. Here is what I would like to do:
1. learn the basics of programming with a language that would teach good code habits and fundamental understanding.
2. become comfortable with (x)html
3. learn another language for the extension of (x)html into a dynamic data-heavy website.
Question could you please suggest a way about going about 1>2>3?Ideally the language of (1) would be something that would not be "wasted" just on web design etc. As a language, C really appeals to me. However, if learning this wouldn't lend itself to being helpful in learning another language for webdesign maybe I shouldn't use it(?).If (1) weren't to be C, what language would be funadmental enough to teach good coding but also be helpful in learning (3)
other than Python, which languages are built into most Linux distros, using a real-time interpreter, like the Python prompt, where you can just enter some commands and test out ideas before actually creating a file with your program?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe embedded hardware is working nicely, and even the antique laptop is now running smoothly using tinycore linux. The device pumps out packets of data at roughly 128 bytes/second (two packets, one 56 bytes, the other 72, alternating every 500mS).
I'd like to create a more general purpose application for monitoring the data being logged. It is a simple matter to have the back-end application write a log file of incomming data, or be a little more sophisticated and just write out changes from the previous packet. The difficulty is that the existing curses-based cli application reads directly from the serial port and can only be run from one place at a time. Once data has been pulled off the port it's not available any more.
A database for logging the data is not necessary, as the application would mostly be used for auditing material consumption, not tracking minute-by-minute usage over any length of time.I could have the existing back-end app. write data to a file accessible through a web server, and allow interested parties to download the information. This would be greatly enhanced by a small front-end app. that can request the data and format it for a more sensible display. Alternatively, is there some way to open a socket (I'm out of my depth here) so a free-standing application could simply request the data, and do the front-end formatting? This presents problems in that it wouldn't be multi-platform capable.

I would like to have a link on a website that when a user clicked on that link, one script or another would execute based on what operating system that person is using. To wit: If a Mac User clicked on it, it would run a terminal script and would set up a served printer for him; if a PC user clicked on it, it would run a script to set up the served printer on his machine, you get the drift. The printer is being served on a Windows Server 2003 machine, the users are NOT domain users, the print server is also hosting the files, scripts, webpage.

I could start with vi and write a php website, but I've no idea what standard frameworks are available for the more rapid development of sites like this. integrating with openid / google accounts etc... what tools are people using to put together these big blocks of drop in functionality and then tieing together with hopefully surprisingly little code?
