Jun 8, 2011I am currently struggling with one of my tasks.I was asked to find a way how to determine how much time an _already running_ process is spending in user and kernel space.E.G. <some tool> <pid>[Control] + [c]<pid> spent 12.1 seconds in user and 1.52 seconds in kernel space.Does something like this exist? Basically I guess I am looking for something similar to time, except that the process is already running.So..a) Is there a tool which fulfills this task?b) Is there a way to write your own software which does the job? Is it even possible to code something I am looking for?I recently found strace -c -p <pid>, but well, this is not exactly what I was looking for.

Mar 2, 2011I am using Debian linux. I have 100 timers running. If a timer expired which will generate a signal and it was mapped to a same function handler. All the timers are mapped to one function handler. The problem is if the timer expires one at a time, the function handler called at a time. But if the 2 timers expires at a time, the function handler is called one time only instead 2 times. Is it possible to invoke the function handler as many times based on timer expirary happens simultaneoulsy?

I then wish to rsync this to a NAS I have located in another building: 0 3 * * * rsync -av -e ssh --delete /backups/ root{at address}:/DataVolume/os_backups/
(yes, I'm rsyncing as root. I absolutely loathe it, but I got thrown into an quasi-SA position with a ridiculous to-do list and no time to do it. I'm having to make things just work and then go back and try to improve them/learn how. I couldn't make it work in a non-root way quick enough, so for now I'm having to cron rsync jobs as root because of all the differing file permissions on this samba/MySql server. I set the NAS to only accepts ssh from the server IP, and we're behind a campus firewall... It's serious trial by fire.) The crontab also has rsync commands for the samba areas, our specialized chemistry software and affiliated MySQL databases............

Before I use up the bandwidth, can someone suggest if the file system default installation is ext 4, as in F11 live cd, or can one now choose ext 3. Whenever i needed it. How do i do the same in Linux:
1. Disabling not-needed daemons from auto-starting?
2. Starting them only when i need them?

Sep 25, 2010I have the latest release of Lucid Lynx installed. I want to try out audio recording on Linux so I want to know if it's possible to use a real time kernel with Lucid. So I installed the 2.6.31 real time kernel. It shows up in GRUB, but when I boot it gives me the message:
mounting none on /dev failed No such device
It then takes me to the login screen, and once I enter my password it just takes me back to the login.

Mar 14, 2010I suspect this has been posted before, but I'm new enough to the OS to lack the proper vocab for a proper search.
In any case, I'm basically trying to run programs remotely at work (from home) that will run for a long time. I first ssh into the appropriate network, then ssh into the individual machine. This works great and I can run programs no problem. The issue is that these programs can run for days or weeks, and the network kicks me out after some period of time due to inactivity.
Is there a way to start a program on a remote machine then terminate the connection but have it keep running?

Jul 13, 2011This morning I ran the automatic upgrade provided on the repositories, updating my kernel from 2.6.38-8 to 2.6.38-10.Unfortunately, upon reboot I discovered that a series of patches I'd applied in order to get my wireless card on my desktop working had been undone (see I had to run a modified version of the instruction set in order to get my wireless back on.My question: is there a way to trigger this every time the kernel upgrades? I'd hate to have to run this cumbersome set of commands manually every time.

eth0 is connecting via a Cisco switch to the outer world and eth1 and eth2 to internal networks.
eth1 and eth2 are working without problems all the time, however I have the following incident with eth0: although it is RUNNING, and after it works for some time (like some hours), it then becomes incapable of sending/receiving traffic. Here are more details, after the interface exits the RUNNING state:

I am wondering whether there this is because there is not traffic for some time and so the interface goes to idle. Is there any parameter I can tweak in RHEL6 to force the interface to remain RUNNING even in the absence of traffic (although I would be expecting that some 802.1 packets would be periodically flowing from the switch to the interface)?

Apr 1, 2011On my server I provide OCR file conversion service but the problem is when a user uploads a file and it's being converted then if you open another tab and try to load the site it won't respond until that conversion is completed. In other words until the PHP script finishes execution apace doesn't serve any other request to the same browser.

Feb 21, 2010This may be a noob question, but I can't find the option to set the computer to hibernate after a given idle time. In the Power options there is an option to suspend, but not to hibernate.
Is there other way to set the hibernation time?
