I have a large text file with three columns. I'm trying to write a PERL script that splits the file up based on the value of the 3rd column. So every time the third column reads 0, a new file is created and all the data up until the next 0 is found is written to that new file. This should happen over and over until the initial file has been entirely split up.
ex data:
000
2024
2243
2143
96962871
97972878
000
2034
3034
3352
So with the data above, the file would be split into two files:
data_1.txt would contain
000
2024
2243
2143
96962871
97972878
and data_2.txt would contain
230
2034
3034
3352

i am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline
Code:
variable=$(cat file.txt)
The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:
Code:
for line in $variable
do
echo $line
# Other commands
done
how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0

I tried to get a block of lines in awk, but unfortunately it returns output of one line only. I don't state the code here, because it's too short and too poor. What exactly I wanted to do: from file "/boot/grub/menu.lst" get blocks of lines, starting by title and ending by Now I have just
Code:
script="/boot/grub/menu.lst";
OLDIFS=$IFS; IFS=$'
';
[code]....
I want to get every block as one row of array.

I have a plain text file with 360 lines of varying length text. How do I add a comma or other symbol to the end of each line so that I can convert the file to csv format that I can open in a spreadsheet (45 rows, 8 columns). That means each 8 lines of text forms 8 columns, with 45 rows.

How would I go about reading the values for each Person, then being able to perform mathematical equations for each Person (finding the sum for example)?

I am trying to construct a quick regex that will search for six lines of text without a clear line break between them. It only needs to search, not replace, as I will be using in gEdit (with regex plugin) anyway.
It's for editing subtitle files. The video player I will be using them on can only cope with 3-line subtitles, so I just need to edit any in the srt file that contain four or more. There won't be many so I can do it manually. For example:
26
00:01:47,357 --> 00:01:49,359
a motivated business
professional with
clearly defined goals.
[Code].....
but .* seems to mean "any character, or none", so that doesn't work. My experience of regular expressions is limited, but I do know they are very powerful when used correctly!

Consider a situation in which you want to display only specific lines of contents from a file or of a command's output. Yes, we have head and tail commands. But, how to view all the lines of a file except the last one or vise versa when we don't know the count of lines in advance?
Consider this output:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# ps au | grep bash
root 6316 0.0 0.0 4672 1440 tty1 Ss+ Apr22 0:02 -bash
root 20847 0.2 0.0 4672 1432 pts/0 Ss Apr23 0:12 -bash
root 21167 0.0 0.0 3920 660 pts/0 S+ 01:00 0:00 grep bash
Here, I don't want the last line (in italic) to be included in the result since the last line is due to "grep bash" in the devised command "ps au | grep bash". Well, we can rewrite the devised command:
Quote:
"ps au | grep bash | head -n 2"
But, again, here we are specifying the count of lines to be included. But, in the presented problem we don't know any count in advance!

I have some variables that are loaded from mysql - in mysql, the line breaks are not indicated by ' or '<br>' or anything -they are just line breaks. the variable is loaded into javascript and then inserted into a <pre> element. the line breaks are not showing up.
pre1 = pre1.replace(/>/g,">"); - this works well, naturally. but how do i get those line breaks to show up as line breaks in a browser?
I've tried many variations of something like:

I would really like to disable how on most KDE programs the boxes that have text in them it has a two tone line scheme, I am probably not explaining it too well but I will attach a picture. I like the color scheme I have now, but for some reason it uses black for the second color. I have looked in appearance settings and haven't found anything that changes it.

Contained within each of these 67 text files is about 1 million urls. Yes. I have 67 text files that contain 1 million lines of urls each. I am sure I am swimming in duplicates. I tried opening one text file and clicking sort ----->remove duplicates. Now Gedit is not responding my processor is maxed out to 100% and I think I am finally ready to delve into some command line code. Can anyone give me idiot proof instructions on how to sort the duplicates out of each one of these 67 text files? How about no duplicates across all 67?
