I want to get the Hard Disk serial number of SCSI HDD on Solaris. On linux this is done using following structs and API:

As you can see, the first command gives numbers like C841-0655. But for the optical disks (iso9660) it gives them not. Neither does the second one. This number is known as 'Volume serial number' in MS-DOS, and is printed on console with the command 'dir' not only for the HDD partitions but for the optical disks too. how to get an optical disk Volume serial number? Notice that this number is inherent to the media (is a property of the media, under any O.S.).
Except faster reading of zone records there is not other purpose of correct SOA number,right?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.5TB hard drive that was initially set up on a Solaris 10 x86 host system. Due to the large device size, Solaris labeled the disk with an EFI (GPT) label instead of the traditional SMI (VTOC) label when it was partitioned. 4 slices are defined in the GPT: root (128 MB), swap (128 MB), usr (1.4 TB) and reserved (8 MB). A standard Solaris UFS filesystem was created on the 1.4TB usr slice.
I have now physically removed the hard drive from the solaris system and have installed it in an Ubuntu 9.10 system. I have no trouble mounting regular Solaris UFS filesystems on SMI-labeled drives:

However for EFI-labeled drives such as the one I described above, there are multiple issues.
1. Ubuntu believes the GPT is incorrect, as witnessed by these syslog messages:

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have a script that prompts you to insert a USB HDD/memory stick then it needs to determine its serial and model and save it to a file. The script can determine the device file of the inserted drive(ex: /dev/sdc) and if hdparm -I /dev/sdc works then all is ok. The problem is that not all USB HDDs/memory sticks work with hdparm. When it does not work I get the following:

The other command to get the serial for USB devices of any kind is lsusb -v or lsusb -D /path/to/bus/address The problem of the first one(lsusb -v) is that it lists all USB devices and there's no way for me to script it to detect the inserted USB drive/memory stick and get the serial/model for it. The problem with the second one(lsusb -D /path/to/bus/address) is that I do not know how to get the correct USB bus address of the inserted USB drive/memory stick.
Is there any other way to get the serial number/model of a USB HDD/memory stick using its /dev/sdc device file? Is there any way to link the /dev/sdc device file with the /dev/bus/usb/address device file so I can then use the lsusb -D command to get the required info?

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

I want to search an entire subtree of /, in the file system, for all files, with extension html, created on the hard disk. In addition, these have to be the last five created. I think I could split the problem into two parts: (a) Forget about the last condition. Then this is a job for the find command. (b) Sort the output of find using the date as the key, then use 'head' to print the desired output. But even two such simple steps are enough to justify the writing of a shell script. And here lies my weakness.
My script writing knowledge is rudimentary. What's the final purpose? Well, I lately saved four or five LQ pages onto disk containing information I consider valuable to me. But I don't exactly remember where on the disk. Then: either the problem posed is really of a very simple nature or it is not, in the latter case a script being mandatory. One of the algorithm drawbacks (the one described above) is that find may be running a great deal of time. My machine resources (RAM and CPU speed are low) are scarce and there possible are a large number of HTML files on the disk.
On a small network i have 3 WinXP computers and i've just installed a two new ones with Win7 pre-installed. As server i'm running OpenSuSE 10.3 and Samba with only one share. As i mount it to WinXP computers all get same volume serial number:

I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been working on writing a small rs232 driver like minicom for months. I am almost there, I have the interrupt service routine running, I can read() ok. However when I write(), it returns the number of characters written, 1, but nothing is actually written out the port. I researched termios, and they say that serial port programming is really messy in linux/unix.
I am probably not setting up the port parameters correctly, or my write() function is not doing what it is supposed to. As I said, write() is returning successful. Other comm programs run ok (picocom & gtkterm) on my hardware. I am running knoppix/debian on an ancient computer. I saw other guys using slackware.

I created a thread about a problem a I had with my hard disk clicking whilst idle little while ago and I may now have stumbled upon a possible solution. The strange thing with the problem is that Ubuntu/Kubuntu didn't cause this problem but Opensuse 11.2 does.

Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom
