Programming :: What Are The 'must Know' Concepts/commands In Valgrind
Jul 11, 2011
For example, in GDB we talk about breakpoints, watchpoints and core dumps etc. Similarly what are the 'must knows' in Valgrind?
P.S. I don't need any links to Valgrind manuals, I already have them.

I tried to install valgrind to my local directory (I don't have privilege to install it under root) by doing the following 3 steps:
(1) ./configure --prefix=/my/local/directory
(2) make
(3) make install
when I run
./valgrind ls -l
as instructed by README, I got this error: valgrind: failed to start tool 'memcheck' for platform 'x86-linux': No such file or directory

I am running Valgrind on my program. It shows me two errors but mentions only addresses against them and not actual code even on a debug build.
The output is
==23002== Memcheck, a memory error detector.
==23002== Copyright (C) 2002-2005, and GNU GPL'd, by Julian Seward et al.
==23002== Using LibVEX rev 1575, a library for dynamic binary translation.

Can someone explain the concepts of IPoIB and TCP over infiniband? I understand the overall concept and data rates provided by native infiniband, but dont quite understand how TCP and IPoIB fit in. Why do u need them and what do they do? What is the difference when someone says their network uses native IB, IPoIB or TCP with infiniband? Which one is better? I am not from a strong networking background, so it would be nice if you could elaborate.

What skills or concepts would you include in these three areas of Perl?
Perl Automation Test
Perl Development
Network Scripts / Programming
Could you make it look like a course contents so that I can check out those topics for the above three broad subjects of Perl?

i have written some really basic loadable kernel modules. There are a couple of concepts that i'll like to get cleared.
In a tutorial, the Makefile was given as follows-
obj-m += try.o
all:
make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(PWD) modules
clean:
make -C /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build M=$(PWD) clean
I understand that -C option of 'make' changes the current directory to /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build (which depends on my kernel).
Now, my question is why to change to that particular directory? Also M=$(PWD) will hold the dir where i have written the module. Why is it required? What does 'modules' at the end of that line indicate?
Q2> We need to include <linux/module.h> and <linux/kernel.h> in a module. If i am right, the module uses kernel headers for these definitions. But how does 'make' find these definitions.
Q3> We are planning to write a custom scheduler for linux kernel. cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler gives us the currently loaded schedulers. How do we expose our scheduler to linux kernel so that we can use it by switching to it.

For some reason valgrind can't give an exact line number for memory leaks. I installed all of the debuginfo packages and I am compiling my program (gWaei) with the -g and -O1 flags. I just don't know anymore. Specifically the libwaei ones are worrying.
Code:

==26794== Copyright (C) 2002-2010, and GNU GPL'd, by Julian Seward et al.
==26794== Using Valgrind-3.6.1 and LibVEX; rerun with -h for copyright info

I downloaded the source for the latest valgrind and ran ./configure. It quits saying:
Quote:
checking the GLIBC_VERSION version... unsupported version
configure: error: Valgrind requires glibc version 2.2 - 2.10
I've seen a slackbuild package for it. I'd like to have valgrind installed, but I'd prefer installing from source. Are unofficial packages the only way to go for the newest or newer release? EDIT: I meant to ask also, very important, what problems could arise from installing a slightly older version? I don't need a long, complex answer. Just off the top of your head, if it would be real stupid to do, let me know. I can google some time.

I'm learning GTK , and would like to use Codeblocks, and/or KDEvelop, and compile my c files using that, but always get an error about gtk/gtk.h not found, but can't figure out how to add the commands... I normally type gcc -o Program1 main.c `pkg-config --libs --cflags gtk+-2.0` That's a lot to type every time to compile.. Isn't there an easier way, in KDevelop, Monodevelop, and/or Codeblocks to make this step quicker, by adding some sort of I-/usr/include commands, or something?? thanks in advance, =). I looked online for some results, but didn't come across anything handy..

I am trying to administer a small group of ubuntu desktops in my classroom. I can use ssh to perform administrative tasks one at a time on each machine, but I want to automate these tasks through a small number of scripts. I am having trouble with running root commands through a script.
On other distros, I think I would simply ssh into the root account, and run the script. But as an ubuntu user, I have only ever used sudo, and folks at ubuntuforums are understandably hesitant to recommend logging in as root. Instead I am seeing suggestions to disable the password requirement for each specific command I want to run, which does not seem like best practice.
Should I enable the root account, give it a password, and ssh to the root account to run the scripts? To be specific, the scripts will do things like install updates, install programs, add or delete users, configure the desktop, etc.
