Programming :: Java And GTK (native Code) Not Compatible With Gcj And Gnome-GCJ
Jul 2, 2010
I'm trying to build a GUI for my java app and compile with gcj (to native code). I started googling and found 3 possibilities: Java-Gnome, Gnome-GCJ and libswt. Unfortunately, Java-Gnome is not compatible with gcj and Gnome-GCJ is, but is no longer maintained. The third option, libswt, I could not find any clear information what is it and how it works. Can you enlighten me a bit more about the subject?

java: /build/buildd/openjdk-6-6b20-1.9/build/../pulseaudio/src/native/org_classpath_icedtea_pulseaudio_Stream.c:680: Java_org_classpath_icedtea_pulseaudio_Stream_nativ e_1pa_1stream_1cork: Assertion `stream' failed.
I keep getting this error about 1-10% of the time when a Java application tries to play audio. When this happens, the whole JVM quits, which means the crash is in native code. I find it difficult to test my Java games, for obvious reasons, since I am a Java developer primarily. I use Eclipse 3.6 SR1 to develop my Java apps, and I'm a recent convert to Ubuntu from Mac OS X. EDIT: Whoops, forgot to mention that I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" x86_64 version.

Against all advice in Centos docs, I built and installed several gnome packages in order to upgrade to the latest Gnumeric. Among them were: fontconfig, pango, gtk+, cairo, glib. goffice, pixman, tiff, and atk. Afterwards, I got missing fonts with some apps, but the biggest problem is interference with my Vmware Workstation GUIs. Yesterday I removed all the libraries I installed hoping to recover. Now things are better, but when I open a terminal on the desktop it opens jammed in the upper-left corner with the top grab bar out of reach of the mouse. Before I remove the ~/.gnome* directories, how to restore things?

I need to code a media streamer in java but I found out that I would need the java media framework to simplify the task. I downloaded the bin and need to export it into the files where my jdk packages are at by default. I'd rather not set my path variables because I'm not so good at interfacing with BASH. I just want to start nautilus in sudo and drag and drop like I did with my python packages. I am just having trouble locating the jdk lib.I'm not using openjdk but sun-jdk 1.6.18. My OS is Lucid. The package is JMF2.1.1e. I'm pretty sure I just need the just the lib files from it and none of the executable.

Im trying to use a Gnome theme designed for Ubuntu on Debian. Ive installed it into /usr/share/themes and the window border and close, minimise maximise buttons show up right but the other controls (buttons, scrollbars, progress bars etc) dont and default to the generic ones.
I know nothing about how themes work really but I assumed as long as both distros were using Metacity it would work?

so with every language I have used, I have found that my style of programming is sub par (terrible at times). I have worked with a good amount of languages lately including bash, C, Java, JavaScript/jQuery, Perl, PHP, Shakespeare, Zombie, etc. I have done a good amount of programming, and in the end they seem to work, but just looking like a piece hacked together. Does anyone know of any books or online guides that help with programming styles and advancement of such?

I noticed there's a new JRE in town, the upgrade 20, I still use the 13. What will the up to 20 do for the software I write? I use openJDK (came with the Fedora I use) to write software, and the JRE to use it in the browser, I needed to see the Java console, hence the need for the Sun JRE...
So: bottomline: if I upgrade to the new JRE - use the alternatives configurator to use that in the browser, will the software written in the current JDK (1.6) still work? Or: is Java downward compatible?
PS : I dont use anything fancy, just RMI, mySQL connectivity and a bit of Swing...

I want to build my own GNOME. The problem I have is that I cannot find the tarball for the GNOME source code. Another thing I've read on their website is that the way to build it is not the conventional './configure, make, make install', and that it has to be done using a multi-phase process. Is this correct?

I am experiencing issues when installing a software package, receiving the following error codes within .../install/logs/log.txt
"percent complete: 98%"
"...../JDK/jre.pak/repository/package.java.jre/java/jre/lib/desktop/icons/HighContrastInverse/16x16/mimetypes/gnome-mime-application-x-java-archive.png (No such file or directory)
"The file java/jre/lib/desktop/icons/HighContrastInverse/16x16/mimetypes/gnome-mime-application-x-java-archive.png could not be replaced"
From looking in the specified directory I can see that this file does not exist, however I am unable to simply create or copy a file with the required name to resolve this issue. Is this a known error, or is my install package simply missing the needed files; even though I managed to successfully install this package a few days earlier onto the same system.

I was wondering if it is at all possible to use CSS code to make the Gnome panel clock text blink. I Googled a bunch of CSS code which is supposedly used to create a blinking text effect but none work in the Gnome panel clock. Is there any sort of CSS code which can do that? If so, what is it?

Getting this error seemingly randomly at login:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The last error message was:
Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
I thought I might be logging in to fast, but it happened again when I had waited several minutes.

I am working on a project with a lot of vector math and I'd like to find a way to speed it up.eading about SSE, but I've found no explanation on how to actually use it in code (was looking for some kind of hello-world example, complete with compilation instructions).Does the gcc compiler automatically make use of SSE, if you add the -sse(2,3) option on the command line? Or are their specific functions/libraries you need to call?

Is there, by chance, a fancy name to describe code that must be in a program but will never be executed? In one of my (Haskell) programs, I have some error-handling code that must be in the program to keep the compiler happy (due to the type checking). However I know that, due to the logical structure of the program, it is impossible for the code to be evaluated. I am curious if there is a technical name given to code that must exist but cannot be executed.
