Programming :: How To Modify System Kernel

Dec 7, 2010

For my work, I have to modify the routing lookup process at Linux kernel.

The details is below:

A-----B.

We have pcA, pcB (using Linux OS kernel 2.6.26.5) connect together. We need to modify the source code of kernel at B in order to if A sends the packets with destination IP address as C, pcB still receives this packet and send to transport layer (that means, it bypass the routing lookup process at kernel).

The solution I used as the following code...

Programming :: Compiling Kernel Module Using (/asm/system.h)

Apr 3, 2011

I`m trying to compile sources of kernel module which has been written for kernel 2.6.9. There were many changes in kernel headers since then in current kernel sources. I`ve found that old /asm/system.h was moved under architecture dedicated directory /arch/*/include/asm/system.h. Anyway during sources compilation I`m having errors related to kernel sources. It looks like there is something wrong with this /asm/system.h

Code:

../asm/system.h: In function __cmpxchg:
../asm/system.h:248: error: expected string literal before LOCK_PREFIX
../asm/system.h:254: error: expected string literal before LOCK_PREFIX

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Parameters : How To Modify Them

Feb 4, 2010

Bottom line first: Is there a GUI or otherwise friendly tool to modify the kernel parameters? One that will give help on a highlighted parameters?

Now as to my reason for this question:

In preparing for an Informix installation, I may need to change some kernel parameters. I could follow the advice of Grard BIGOT from a couple of years ago at this URL. However, messing with the kernel this way, by directly editing /etc/sysctl.conf, is a bit scary. I have already backed up the current one and started editing according the Informix machine notes. However, I have commented out my new settings. [:Chicken]

The scariest aspect of this is that the notes recommend settings to kernel parameters that I do not find in /proc/sys/kernel. for example, it recommends setting SHMMIN to 1 but when I can /proc/sys.kernel/shmmin, there is no such file. (I did find shmmax.) Similarly for the very logical shmseg (max number of shared memory segments) - not found. I am afraid to add these into sysctl.conf if the equivalent pseudo-files don't exist.

Additional question: Where [on-line] do I find all kernel parameters documented? This is so that I am more certain of what I am doing instead of relying on my memory. For example, I don't recall the names of the parameters that control Kernel-Asynchronous I/O (KAIO) events.

Fedora :: Subject - Modify Only Parameters In Kernel Config

Aug 28, 2009

I want to start to play with "homemade" kernels. (To get some experiences in this subject). I want to do this step-by-step. I have already read a lot about this. I have a Fedora 10 running. So I want to start with this. I have read that there is a "special" way to create a kernel for Fedora. [URL] OK. I understand this +/-. When you build a new kernel with an other version number, you have to rebuild all the modules with this new kernelversion, and you have to install these also.

But : I want to start with modify only some parameters in my kernel config. Do I need to rebuild and re-install the modules also? Will it not be enough to rebuild only the kernel? (vmlinuz) Where can I find some information about the options I can disable in my kernel to speedup my system? (boot process ed). I want to suppress the loading of unneeded modules. I want to understand the options in menuconfig (and there are a lot of options ! ! )

Slackware :: How To Modify Grub To Boot Using Generic Kernel

Feb 16, 2011

My Slackware boots using the huge kernel. I am not using LILO; I am using GRUB from the extras directory on the DVD. I followed the tutorial @ [URL] up to the point where it discusses modifying LILO. My /boot/grub/menu.lst reads, in part:

# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Slackware Linux on (/dev/sda7)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends

This boots the huge kernel. What changes must I make to the above menu.lst entry to boot using the generic kernel?

Programming :: Modify Lines That Are Too Long?

May 25, 2010

I have a CDL netlist with 5630 lines. 512 of the lines are over 128 characters. The tool I am using to read in the CDL returns an error for each line over 128 characters.

If the line is too long I can fix it by adding a line continuation symbol, in this case a "/", somewhere prior to the 128th character then a line feed, obviously, and a "+" to the continuation.

example (pretend its a long line);
before;
this line is too long
after;
this line /
+ is too long

Part of the problem is that I can't use a constant point prior to the 128th character because I can't break up a term.

bad;
this line i /
+ s too long

If I can replace the last space before the 128th character with " / + " on all lines that are over 128 characters then I'm golden. I'm not sure if I need to escape the + or not. If so then the substitution is " / + ". And if I use sed then I'll escape the .

Programming :: Modify Output Of Shell Script

Dec 3, 2010

I'm running RHEL5.5 and nagios 3.2.0. The real question deals with how to change the printed output so nagios will work with it.I have made a script that will calculate network throughput on interfaces. The script is going through and finding all interfaces (eth, bond, lan) and doing the math to calculate throughput.The output is mainly for nagios to report and trend the values. As nagios wants to see nothing but perf data after the '|' character, I somehow need to have only one '|' character for all of the output.

Programming :: BASH: Read + Define + Modify A Numeric Value From/to A File?

Mar 25, 2010

I want my bash file to read from "input.dat" the two values emin emax. My input file looks like that:

#cat input.dat
!Energies
emin 10.00 !minimum energy
emax 30.00 !maximum energy

Now this seems to be not so hard with the command awk

#!/bin/bash
awk '{FS=" "}/emin/{print $2}' input.dat
awk '{FS=" "}/emax/{print $2}' input.dat

[code]....

So far so good. Now, I want to define two variables (e.g. e1,e2) in the bash file, so that their values would correspond to 00.00 and 30.00, as read from the input file. This one I have not found yet, thus asking for your advice. At the end, writing echo $e1 $e2, I should get 10.00 30.00 This is even harder to me: I want to replace the values emin,emax in a new file "modify.dat" which looks like that:

...
c---- energy interval
emin = 1.00
emax = 2.00
...

with the values e1 and e2 I have in my bash file. In other words, I want to call "modify.dat", find these two lines and replace the numeric values with the e1 and e2. At the end, my file should be like:

...
c---- energy interval
emin = 10.00
emax = 30.00
...

Code:

[code]...

Once having those elements in that way within an array(a[]), I want to be able to manipulate the array (a[]) and copy its elements
to another array (b[]) in different order (all lines joined in a single line separated with commas), as follow:

Code:

Category,Adventure,Titles,Robinson,Crusoe,Saturday,Authors,Daniel-Defoe,Ian-McEwan

Programming :: Netlink Sockets In Kernel And Ethernet Driver - Kernel Crash

Aug 31, 2010

I write the network driver. Transmission of packets in user space I do through netlink socket`s. In user space there is a handling of packets and their transmission on other device (however, it isn't important).

Problem in that any time, packets through the driver in system, and is reverse, are transferred normally. But then there comes the moment when the kernel crash. If to look in syslog it seems to me that comes deadlock. Also I think that it is related with netlink socket`s.

I can't find the information on that anywhere how correctly to use netlink socket`s in kernel space. Can at you will any a reason into the account of synchronization of sockets and the driver in kernel space?

I can give the driver code if it is necessary.
