Programming :: How To Access Four Dimensional Array
May 23, 2010
I have never used multidimensional array for a long time so please consider this as a newbie question. I am editing a program that uses a 4 dimensional array and I think I'm losing track of the indexes.
day = 0 to 30
hour = 0 to 23
channel = 0 to 7
len = 0 to 63
unsigned char idx[day][channel][hour][len];
I have seen that the assignment to a string is
snprintf(idx[day][hour][channel], 64, "%s/%s", dayofmonth, hourofday);
Is this correct? Because when I access with a day argument, that day value goes into the hour part.

I do a lot of scientific work - mainly in C/C++ but want to do some of the calcs in python, however I am finding it a problem with the lack of dimensionality. I frequency have a list of n particles and a multi-dim array for each particle and want to be able to access directly any component with ease. How best to go about this...
my prop = [n][x][y][z]
I might need a particular value and then to update that. I do not want to have to deal with lists etc etc as this feels rather cumbersome, adding, removing etc. There must be an easy way.

I tried to look for this, but there are so little of perl on internet:
Code:
@array = [$title, $description, $pubDate, $link];
push(@feeds1, $array);
I am trying to create a 2 D array by PUSH, so the output would look like:
([ $title, $description, $pubDate, $link ], [ $title, $description, $pubDate, $link ], [ $title, $description, $pubDate, $link ], [ $title, $description, $pubDate, $link ]...etc )

I have a multi-dimensional array like so:
Code:
Array (
[0] => Array (
[0] => Eleven
[1] => NumberEleven
[2] => 11 )
[1] => Array (
[0] => Twelve
[1] => NumberTwelve
[2] => 12 )
[2] => Array (
[0] => AnotherEleven
[1] => Eleven,Again
[2] => 11 )
I need to sort it by array[ $key ][ 2 ] so that it is sorted like so:
Code:
Array (
[0] => Array (
[0] => Eleven
[1] => NumberEleven
[2] => 11 )
[1] => Array (
[0] => AnotherEleven
[1] => Eleven,Again
[2] => 11 )
[2] => Array (
[0] => Twelve
[1] => NumberTwelve
[2] => 12 )
I've looked at the php array docs the closet thing I found was array_multisort which won't work for my above requirements, does anyone have any insight to how to sort this way?

I am parsing through XML documents with a PHP script and creating an array because, as far as I know, I can manipulate arrays better than the features DOM gives me. That part is not as important, though. The array it produces though is multi-dimensional, but somewhat inconsistent. If I have the following XML:
PHP Code:
<domains> <domain>
<title>google.com</title> <bookmarks>
<bookmark>maps.google.com</bookmark>
<bookmark>news.google.com</bookmark>
<bookmark>mail.google.com</bookmark>
</bookmarks> </domain> <domain>
<title>bankaccount.com</title>
<bookmarks> <bookmark>login.bankaccount.com</bookmark>
</bookmarks> </domain> </domains>
To call the first bookmark from the first domain, it would be:
PHP Code:
$array['domains']['domain'][0]['bookmarks']['bookmark'][0]
To call the first bookmark from the second domain, it would be:
PHP Code:
$array['domains']['domain'][1]['bookmarks']['bookmark']
The problem is, I want to simply call bookmarks through a simply 'foreach()' or 'for()' function and the lack of consistency might be a problem, but the fact that some levels have a '0' array key and others do not is causing a problem.

I'm trying access binary records that were created in Borland Delphi and stored in a SQL Server database (as a BLOB). What the heck is the syntax for accessing a two-D array in C#? Here's an example:
Code:
const
MAX_BOWLERS = 8;
gMAX_FRAMES = 40;
...
type
[code]...
I've successfully got a valid "GameRec" over to C#-land. I want to access array element "GameRec.Frames[iBowler, iFrame]".
How do I define a C# type "TFrames = Array[1..Max_Bowlers, 0..gMax_Frames] of TFrame;" so that I can do it?

When I deal with an array in a function I con not access to the content of array in a for loop, but out of a for loop I can access to them! for example
[code]...
In a function when I send as parameter, in a for loop it prints the content of array and out of a for loop it prints the address of arr[i]

I just started programming in PHP so I haven't figured out how to do this yet, but I have a multi-dimensional array that I need to sort by one column. That's fine...but I need the sort to ignore case! Right now I have it sorted by 'name' (the other column is 'uid').
The problem is that by the default the sort is case-sensitive so the array looks like this:
Code:
Apple 4015
Banana 4011
Cherry 4045
avocado 4046
I want to be able to sort the the 'name' column in a case-insensitive manner so that the array actually looks like:
Code:
Apple 4015
avocado 4046
Banana 4011
Cherry 4045
How to accomplish this? Just FYI I'm not actually sorting the PLUs for fruits...but it was a simple example. I'm actually doing this for a Facebook application.

I am curious if there is a way to describe and use variable sized multi-dimensional arrays in C using pointers. I mean, for 1-dimensional array e.g. I can use the following piece of code:
...
int i , N;
int *array;
scanf("%d", &N);
array = (int*) malloc(N*sizeof(int));
for (i=0; i<N; ++i) array[i] = i; // Assigning values to the array
for (i=0; i<N; ++i) printf("%d ", array[i]); // Printing the assigned values
free (array);
...
But what about the two dimensional array[N][M] ? I guess I have to use a double pointer e.g: int **array. But how exactly? Note that I use C90 and not C99.

I am in need of some syntax help. I'm trying to figure out how to store and retrieve an array out of a hash of hashes. For this example, I'm trying to access the city list for a particular state for a particular country. I understand I could do a join and split on the hash key to combine Country and State, but trying to keep things separated.The code I have gets in all the information for the Countries, and states, and gets the list of cities together, no problem. I store all the city names in an array, then make an anonymous pointer to the array for the hash, like this - $MY_CITIES{$COUNTRY}{$STATE} = [@CITIES]I believe that syntax is correct, or is it? What I'd like to do is I need to cycle through every hash to find if a city exists or not. If it exists in 3 states, then it should print 3 times. Here is the code block to search -
Code:
for $COUNTRY (@LIST_OF_COUNTRIES) {
for $STATE ( keys %MY_CITIES{$COUNTRY){$STATE} ) {

I'm writing a PHP program. I've encountered a problem; in the following code I try to pass $_POST['delete'] which is an array as the value of a hidden input to some form, but it doesn't do so.there's something wrong with converting PHP array into HTML array. I'm sure that $_POST['delete'] is not null and is a real array.
echo '<input type="hidden" name="delete[]" value="'.$_POST['delete'].'" />';

We ran out of space on our server hard drive, so I installed 2 x 1GB drives, set them up as a software RAID1 array, copied the contents of /home to it, mounted it as /home for testing. Everything OK, so I unmounted it, deleted the contents of the /home folders (don't worry, we're backed up), then remounted the array. Everything was fine until we rebooted. Now I can't access the array at all; during booting the error "mount: special device /dev/md1 does not exist" comes up twice, and manually trying toe same issue. The relevant line from fstab reads:
/dev/md1 /home ext3 defaults 0 0
However, using webmin shows only md0, the RAID0 device on which the OSD was originally installed. There is no /dev/md1 device file. The mdadm.conf file reads as follows:
# mdadm.conf written out by anaconda
DEVICE partitions
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid0 num-devices=2 uuid=76fd4050:fb820568:c9bd3a59:ad3e70b0
So it's not listed; I'm assuming this is significant. Am I right, and whether I am or not, what can I do?

I need to access each drive of a RAID array in order to update the firmware - I am completely new to linux. I think there are probably some potential challanges along the way to get this "working" For example, it seems to me that the array may present itself to application code as a single device. I need to drill down into the RAID and talk to each physical device in turn via some sort of pass-through mechanism. I'm currently pretty lost - can anyone point me in the "right" direction

i have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):
Code:
- 250GB system drive
250MB/dev/sdh1/bootext3
lvm partition rest of driveVolGroup_System
10240VolGroup_System-LogVol_root/ext4
[code]....
except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.

1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays:
2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126
2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125
I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. To my surprise, the array was marked as "auto read only":
[Code]...
and the partition in it was not available as device special file in /dev:

There is no compilation involved. Every thing is happening at the run-time. I tried using STL like map along with malloc but i am unable to name an array at run-time. I was try this way get the ascii for them, actually I have done this in java and it is simple.
something like this format
array[ascii{a}-ascii{a}]=0
