Programming :: Panic - Killing Interrupt Handler - Not Syncing

May 10, 2010

I have written a Linux kernel module (in Linux 2.4, Red Hat 9) which does the followings: It takes srcIP, sourceport, destIP, destport and loadvalue as command line arguments. If configured load value is greater than 1, it creates different channels (i.e. No of UDP channels created equals to configured load value), assign different source port and destination port to different channels and send UDP datagram in different channels. Say for example the configured parameters are as follows srcIP=10.17.17.43 destIP= 10.17.17.44 sourceport=10000 destport= 20000 loadvalue=2.

Then it creates two UDP different channels and transmits UDP packets (in every 20 milliseconds) to destination IP address (i.e., 10.17.17.44) with source port 10000, destination port 20000 in one channel and source port 10002, destination port 20000 in another channel. When I configure to pass ?loadvalue=500? and run the module, I get the below kernel panic message in system log file (i.e., var/log/messages) 0>Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler! In interrupt handler - not syncing. Running the same linux kernel module ,in 1000 loadvalue, I get this message, eth0: Out-of-sync dirty pointer, 49937 vs. 49954 in text console. I am unable to catch the root cause of these problems and how will I solve these?

Debian Programming :: Trigger Interrupt With Middle Mouse Button In Terminal

Ctrl-c with middle mouse button (MMB) trigger in running bash script trigger.

The key combination Ctrl-C or "^C" with the keyboard triggered on a running bash script stands for "signal interrupt" (SIGINT) and terminates the process.

For my workflow in the test phase, how I could do that with the MMB-Buffer, followed by the modified script command:

Code: Select allscript runs
script runs
script runs

Signal interrupt and rerun with MMB trigger:

Code: Select all^C; ./script.sh
modified script runs
modified script runs
does not work and 2 hours meta-crawlers

Programming :: Thread Stack Using Pthread_attr_setstackaddr()?

Sep 22, 2010

When I set the stack base address of the child thread using the POSIX library function "pthread_attr_setstackaddr()", I am unable to access the memory contents of its parent. The data-structures that are created on the HEAP of its parent using malloc() are either getting destroyed or unaccessible when moving to the context of the child thread. These data-structures are being passed as an argument to the child thread.Even if I make these variables global then also it is not working.pthread_attr_setstacksize(tattr, ...);stackbase = (void *) malloc(...);pthread_attr_setstackaddr(tattr, stackbase); But when I create the child thread without setting its stack base address using that pthread_attr_setstackaddr(), then it is able to access the parent's memory contents.

Programming :: Why The Stack Size Limit

May 1, 2011

Why is it in Linux that there is a stack size set by default? And why is it so small? (My system is set to 8192 kbytes.) And why is there a default limit on the stack size when the max memory and virtual memory size are, by default, unlimited? (Aren't they both fed from the same place ultimately?)

Reason I ask: I want to use recursive functions in my programming a lot more. Problem is, if the language (or implementation) doesn't happen to support tail-call recursion, then I can be pretty well certain that the first huge problem that gets thrown at my function is going to kill my program because the stack size limit is going to be quickly reached. Obviously, I can change the stack size limit for my own computers, but it doesn't feel so great knowing that most of the people who copy and execute my code will have probably have overlooked this. Anyway, does anyone know: is this small default stack size limit just one of those historical artifacts, or is there some technical reason for it?

Programming :: Why The Thread Stack Size Cannot Be Changed When Calling In A Dynamic Library

Jan 5, 2011

Why the thread stack size can not be changed after calling pthread_attr_setstacksize & pthread_create in a dynamic library? Detail: I write a file thread_factory.c and plan to build it and produce a dynamic library (libthread_factory.so) In the thread_factory.c , there is a routine

[Code]....

And after this, there is application, it will call fct_thread_create(STACK_SIZE_256KB), and then call pthread_attr_getstacksize(), but the stack size return always be a fixed value 0xa01000. (I tried this on Fedora12) But if I build the application source code with the file thread_factory.c directly, the stack size return is right as my expect. I checked the source code of glibc about the routine pthread_create() as below:

Programming :: Rules To Set The Pthread Stack Size - Compute The Memory Needed By Each Thread?

Jul 26, 2010

i have an application that launches several pthreads, i know that the default size used by Linux is 8Mb for each pthread. However i would like to optimize the total memory usage by my application by decreasing the default stack size of each pthread to the needed resources. My questions:

- Are there any rules to set the pthread stack size.
- How to compute the memory needed by each thread.
- Is the malloc call inside a thread counted from the stack size of the same pthread?

Programming :: Passing Data From Interrupt Handler Function To Tasklet Function?

May 18, 2010

I am doing some Linux kernel programming for my research project. I need to record the timestamp (by using cpuid and rdtsc) when an interrupt handler (top half) is first invoked. Due to the time critical nature of the problem itself, I have to do the timestamping inside the interrupt handler itself (the first operation when the handler is called). However, I understand that tasks that are not so time critical should be deferred to a tasklet function (bottom half) for processing because other interrupts are disabled in a (top-half) interrupt handler. I am currently out of idea on how I can pass the timestamp information that I have obtained in the interrupt handler to the corresponding tasklet function.

Programming :: What Exactly Does Echo $0 Return

Jan 18, 2010

I'm confused about what "echo $0" in a shell actually return. Consider these tests:

Code:
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# # Login shell:
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# echo $0
-bash
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# # Starting a new shell
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# bash
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# echo $0
bash
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# screen
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# echo $0
/bin/bash

Depending on wether the shell is a login shell, a regular shell, or a screen utility, I get different results.

Programming :: Tell If Grep Didn't Return Anything?

Mar 15, 2011

I have a file:

979798707
787862348
766428634

I want to see if all the records in the file are present in the contents of the files of a particular directory.

Basically I want to say if grep doesn't return anything, then report.

For example in /tmp dir I have 4 files and flast 2 values (787862348 and 766428634) are present in the files of /tmp dir, but first one (979798707) is not. I want to echo that in a reporting file.

something like:

while read line
do
# if ! grep -rl $line /tmp
echo $line >> are_not_present
done < "myFile"

How do I achieve " if ! grep -rl $line /tmp"? That is, if the line is found by grep, then grep will print the output, but if grep does'nt find it, it will print nothing. How can I check if grep didn't find it (i.e. printed nothing)?

Programming :: Echo Hello Command Does Not Return

I am testing the serial ports on a Single Board Computer(SBC) running Linux kernel 2.6.29. I usually do this by connecting the serial port to another PC serial port, then doing "cat /dev/ttyS0" on PC and "echo hello > /dev/ttyS0" on the SBC. However in the current system, "echo hello > /dev/ttyS0" command does not return at all! Also no characters appear on the destination port. I am running the echo command as root. The system boot messages show that the serial port in indeed /dev/ttyS0.

Programming :: Getting Return Value From Program Ran In Background?

Mar 10, 2010

I think my title pretty much explains it. I am writing a script and I want to start a program in the background, and when that program finishes I want to check the return value to make sure there was no error. For example normal I would do something like this:

#!/bin/sh
program
if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]; then
echo "There was an error"
exit 1
fi

Now I want to do something like this:

#!/bin/sh
PRTN=`program1 &`
program2
if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]; then

[code]....

In this case if program2 finishes before program1, I don't think the return value from program1 $PRTN would be valid at the time it is checked.
