Programming :: Difficulties Running Commands In Shells From Perl?

Jun 23, 2010

I'm getting something(s) wrong, trying to run commands (both simple and piped) in shells from Perl programs. The ultimate objective is to set up "copy X selection to clipboard" from urxvt but apparently simple debugging statements are not working.Here's the Perl, taken from here and modified to use xclip instead of xsel and with debugging added, shown in green

Code:
#! /usr/bin/perl
sub on_sel_grab {

Programming :: Passing Commands To Running Daemon?

May 10, 2010

I am working on a daemon that I want to change some variables while its running. Is this possible?I want to implement a command line type interface for my daemon so I can send it commands that will change the current values of specific variables, and also be able tell the daemon to load/save a config file.The only thing I have found so far is passing arguments to a daemon, but that seems to be a one-time shot when your first starting it.

Programming :: Simple Bash Script Is Not Running All Of The Commands?

Jun 14, 2010

I am running a simple script that I copied from slug.ceca.utc.edu/docs/2009-3-26-linux-server-health.pdf and edited with the names and paths of my own servers. I don't know much about scripting (re: nothing) but I wanted to try and be efficient in my new role as a Linux Sys Admin. The script was saved to root's home directory and runs as part of root's crontab once a week. The script runs with no problem, but it doesn't actually seem to run all of the commands contained within. It skips some in the middle and the end and I don't know why. The script itself is this:

Code:
#!/in/bash
uname -a > /tmp/server.txt

Programming :: Different Initialized Environments For Shells Vs Emacs?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm finalizing the the dual-boot addition that I recently completed. I've added lubuntu to the LT3114u Netbook that I use. That's done, now I'm migrating my user environment back from the Cygwin one that I've been using on Windoze, as of late. One of features that's been useful has been the global environment management possible with the windoze UI functions. As I coded my emacs environment while 'over there' (windoze side), I included a check for the lisp library repository path environment variable EMACSLOADPATH. It is globally available when one logs in, and does not get set in any user scripts, or dot files any to do with CYGWIN or emacs.

While it has been easy enough to set EMACSLOADPATH for the login shell environment, via .bashrc, .profile, and system wide via /etc/profile, I have not been able to have '/usr/bin/emacs23' have EMACSLOADPATH set when invoked via the LXDE UI. Thus, it would appear that emacs is not being initialized with the same environment that any of the shells are (old school?). Thus, what is it that one must update in order to have GNU emacs initialized with the same environment variables as bash? Or, put another way, why aren't the environment variable defined in /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and/or ~/.profile ending up in the initialized environment upon invocation of emacs23 on lubuntu Linux?

Server :: Running A Shell Script With Perl?

quick guidance on running a bash script using Perl. The script is calledarchive_web.sh.The regular script I have and use now (archive.sh) creates an archive directory (uses the current date as the dir name) and moves all existing files there.The script is cronned to run every day before midnight. I'd like to be able to run this "archiving script"manually, from the web, at my own discretion, rather than necessarily wait till midnight (but want it to run then, too, in case any new files present themselves in the directory).These shell scripts sit in an .htaccessed directory. Talk about making up verbs all over the place.

Fedora :: Running Bash And Perl Scripts On Desktop

Nov 8, 2010

I wanted to run bash and perl scripts which requires SU privileges by clicking on desktop
Terminal window opens and closes fast without knowing what happened.

scripts work on terminal window by telling
sudo perl file.pl
sudo bash file.sh

Perl has this header
#!/usr/bin/env perl
or
#!usr/bin/perl -w

Bash has header
#!/bin/bash

How can I run them with desktop shortcuts with SU privilege so, the terminal will not close after execution? Should not the scripts work without telling perl or bash, since they have the header?

Slackware :: HP PhotoSmart Plus All-in-one Difficulties In 13.37?

Jun 25, 2011

Having looked at the various threads on the forum I have not seen one that seems to answer my issue. About a week ago I tried installing my HP Printer (PhotoSmart Plus) and was unable to due to me not having run rc.cups. I have now done that and the installation of the printer went smoothly, it was detected over the network and the correct ppd was identified (seems it is actually on the firmware of the printer) and I was able to add the printer with the HPLIP (version 3.11.3a).

However right after the printer was added HPLIP tries to get a status report on the printer, this is when I get an error "Device communication error (5012)". I have attached a screenshot of what I see. I also tried scanning from the device and I get similar errors that the device isn't responding etc. The printer is attached to the network via wireless and I am trying to print to it using my laptop also connected to the network via wifi (doubt that has any bearing but just FYI). edit: I have found on an old Ubuntu discussion that one solution a user had for this specific problem was to install SNMP... I didn't add SNMP when I installed Slackware earlier today, could this assist...?

edit 2: CUPS on localhost:631 shows the printer as idle (did attempt to print just to see but no go...

Red Hat / Fedora :: Running Script And Commands Through SSH?

Apr 14, 2011

I am trying to run some simulations through SSH from my mac on our university SOLARIS system. My problem is that whenever I want to execute a command I get an error which says "Invalid argument". Maybe I should explain more what I want to do and what I did.Firstly I installed a software which I need to run, I did it through ThinLink, and it seems that it is running fine without a problems. I can execute all commands and scripts. Installed software contains tens of small programs. I have compiled it and assign the PATH to be able to use the software. This was still via ThinLink. Then I wanted to start to use SSH since it should be more secure and also faster for me. When I wanted to do same think as in ThinLink I got the message Invalid argument. For example I run a command which use program gensky. I wrote:

Code: gray1(dava) $ gensky 4 4 4

I got:

Code: -bash: ............/Radiance_install/bin/gensky: Invalid argument (i replaced the path to my home directory by dots) The PATH to the program seams correct but it does not run correctly. With SSH I can log into the remote machine and see all the files which I have on the disk as well as to run standard commands like mkdir etc. But I cannot run the programs which I installed.

Software :: SSH: Running Various Commands On A Router?

I tried to do it like this:

( echo ping localhost; echo ping localhost; ) | ssh -i blah user@router

The connection is established, but it gets broken after login and no command is executed. Is there a way I could tell ssh to read a text file where the chain of commands is?

Debian :: Running Admin Commands As Non-root

Apr 4, 2016

I use two separate systems both running Debian 8. On one (my main) I can't do some commands including ping, shutdown and reboot without running them as root user, however on my other system I can ping and reboot as a non-privileged user. The permissions on both systems are the same for /bin/ping and /sbin/systemctl (reboot). I thought at first it was something to do with what groups my main was in, but that doesn't seem to be the gase.

I know I can fix it by setting setuid for both, but my question is why is it different on both machines? Is there a global setting controlling this in /etc or perhaps an icmp setting?

Ubuntu Servers :: Any Way To See Running Commands With Timestamp?

Jul 26, 2010

I recently hired a new tech guy to start managing our servers. In doing this I went ahead and upgraded all the servers. It has been awhile now since I sent him the details of the new server and the last time I talked to him he was joking around with one of the other clients not realizing how long it took.

I know on other server moves, my old guy could have everything setup and running in a couple days as a good amount of time is waiting for the data to copy over. I am starting to wonder if this guy is going to try and throw a huge bill at me, so I would like to know what hes doing on the server with time stamps just so I can get a idea of how much time he has been logged into the server. Does this server OS have anything like this built in?
