OpenSUSE :: Libnotify Not Working In GNOME (11.4)?
Mar 29, 2011
libnotify doesn't display anything, even when I test it with notify-send in the terminal. I recently installed KDE and XFCE to test them out, but uninstalled them later, and I think that may have caused something to break.
I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:
jjmuw@g01:~> xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2 users Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "::1:1.0". No protocol specified No protocol specified
[code]....
(y2base:4872): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: ::1:1.0
Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).
after installing Gnome 3 on Opensuse 11.4 everything works but the window theme it looks like **** and I can't figure out how to change it. How do I go about changing the theme?
Is it possible to send a libnotify from a cronjob? I'd like a notify message when my daily backup is done. When I run my script from terminal everything is working fine, when (ana)cron runs it, it works as well but the notify is surpressed. My Guess was, that it happens because the jobs are run as root. Nevertheless is it possible to get a notification message?
I'm using Emesene here and trying to use a libnotify plugin. But then, this annoying thing happens: But I'm pretty sure I have libnotify installed, saw that on Synaptic.
Using the Nvidia driver from the repo on a Geforce 6800gs. In Kde4 all 3d applications seem to be working properly so I don't know why Gnome 3 is doing that myself. It wasn't working at all at one point and I am assuming that some update or another got it going. Perhaps a repo switch. Unfortunately I am not sure of what those changes may be. I just know that it does run now but only in fallback.
I have mail-notification installed (using Lucid beta) but for some reason it doesn't send notifications using libnotify, but instead shows a standard gtk pop-up. I have the evolution plugin for mail-notification installed, and in fact the issue is not related to evolution, since I tried setting up mail-notification directly for an IMAP account and got the same ugly pop-up.
Any time I watch a screencast dealing with notifications, there are always multiple of them on the screen. But when I have a program that uses them it always just allows one at a time.
How to detect libnotify popup notification? I would like to set while loop that checks for notifications (from liferea rss reader) and play sound when notification is shown.. Have tryed:
Code: [kuba@Kuba-fedora uget-1.8.0]$ ./configure checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p checking for gawk... gawk checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes checking for style of include used by make... GNU checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler works... yes checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out checking for suffix of executable .....
Configure: error: Package requirements (libnotify) were not met: No package 'libnotify' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables LIBNOTIFY_CFLAGS and LIBNOTIFY_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. But I have the newest version of libnotify.
I have a notebook with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 130M. Desktop effects were working on OpenSUSE 11.2. Last week I upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.3, and now desktop effects do not work. When I try to enable them, a box pops up that says something like "desktop effects are not supported on your hardware / configuration. Do you want to try anyway?". If I "try anyway", it does NOT work - I get a jumbled screen that is mostly black, but sometimes objects appear when I mouse over them.
I have the proprietary nvidia drivers (version 256.53) loaded and working (nvidia kernel module loaded, Nvidia splash screen on X server startup, correct lines found in Xorg.0.log).
The Composite option is enabled:
Never-the-less, I still cannot enable the desktop effects.
OpenSuSE 11.1 updated on Saturday to all of the latest patches and stuff. I was a bit behind, so quite a few things got updated. Most of them probably don't matter for this problem.
Prior to Saturday, desktop effects were working fine. After, they don't. Gnome still works ok, but attempting to go in to the "Desktop Effects" configuration just hangs for a minute (spinning "wheel" cursor) then nothing happens ("arrow" cursor returns).
Looking at things via "ps ax" I can see that clicking on "Desktop Effects" starts process(/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/simple-ccsm).
Running this from a CLI produces:
After which nothing happens and I have to hunt down the PID and kill it.
Searching for this "tuple index out of range" error, I found a couple of 2008 references, but those are for much older version so I'm thinking that they're probably not relevant. Nothing else seems to apply.
just upgraded to gnome 3.0.1 but it started in fallback mode ...! and i really don't know where to go next Here is my kernel version
Code: OpenSuSe 11.4 Linux linux-6rb4.site 2.6.37.6-0.5-default #1 SMP 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Here is hardware System : LapTop HP G62 Processor : Intel® Coreâ„¢ i3 CPU M 350 @ 2.27GHz Ă— 4 Graphic : Intel® Ironlake Mobile GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT x86/MMX/SSE2
I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.
NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.
Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?
I like using vnstat to check my downloads. I have it working on my other installed distro's but for some weird reason I cannot get it working under Fedora 14 Gnome. Set up the same way, it tells you exactly what to type when you first run vnstat so its not that. But I try to run vnstat after setting the DB for eth1 I get this:
Code: eth1: Not enough data available yet. This is at least 30 gig later and 4 days it would be great. Or any commands I can run to give more info. Was not really sure what else to give on this matter.
I cannot run the 'About Me' under Applications -> System -> Preferences. I learned it can be run through the terminal using 'gnome-about-me', and after trying that, I get this error:
Code: gnome-about-me (gnome-about-me:12785): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2245: cannot get book from factory: Invalid source (gnome-about-me:12785): libebook-WARNING **: e-book.c:2245: cannot get book from factory: Invalid source[code]...
I just restored my computer and because I cannot open 'About Me', I cannot change my user password.
Y keY is not working.I changed keYboards and its still the same. It works fine in ttY1 for example and shift Y works too. It works fine within things like openarena... But in gnome it does not. I checked binds and stuff, everYthing seems normal and i havent thouched anYthing related. It just does nothing when i press it alone.
I am using Fedora 13 x86_64 on my notebook.I have been using this for quite sometime now. I have a problem with the Gnome desktop. Here is what happenedI am using gnome with a single panel on the top. I changed the properties of the panel, made it transparent and then changed its position to the bottom. As soon as i did this, my desktop was not responding. I can move the mouse pointer, but the icons and menus and everything else became inactive. Within a minute the music playing in the background stopped working. None of the keyboard shortcuts are working. I waited for sometime but nothing happened, so I restarted the system.
Once I login after restart, the same problem is repeating, nothing loads up. I can just see the default background and the mouse pointer rotating as it does when some process is going on. But nothing loads up even after waiting for 15mins. Right now I am using Xfce which is working perfectly fine. Can someone help me with this.??---------- Post added at 04:01 PM GMT ---------- Previous post was at 11:13 AM GMT --------UPDATEI tried fixing it by uninstalling the gnome desktop and reinstalling it.I did the following command in terminal > yum remove gnome-desktopand it removed several dependancies too. I restarted the system and not even the loginscreen is showing up now.I am trying to install gnome from my fedora live CD. But I cannot figure out how.
I just noticed that my screensaver was not working in Fedora 14 x86_64 / Gnome. I searched in Yumex on "screensaver" and reinstalled all that were marked as installed, but no joy. Not only does the screensaver not come on (it is set to 30 minutes) but if I go into Preferences > Screensaver and click on one of the choices it does not display the selected screensaver in the preview window. That is, none of them display except Floating Feet and Floating Fedora Bubbles. What is going on is to discover where those two screensavers come from as opposed to the others. i.e., what packages are they from?
Fedora 14 is the first time i have used linux on my machine for any length of time at all. I have been using Gnome but i prefer KDE so have both installed. Now I have libimobile (is that what its called?) and ifuse and have had a bit of a look around. why it mounts automatically in Gnome but not KDE and how can i mount it in KDE?
my Gnome Desktop is not working means i can't able to copy/paste into it and my fedora directory window is opening in konqueror web browser.plz tell me what is default for fedora dir. window and item from desktop are deleted.i am using fedora 14
This happens once in a while: I'm happily surfing the Internet, working or doing anything else and suddenly Gnome logs off. That's a pain in the *** really.
I recently discovered that I could not get gnome-dictionary to perform word look-up on ANY of my Ubuntu systems. I discovered that the problem is not with the app at all, but with the default source; dict.org has stopped functioning as gnome-dictionary expects (and trying to get to the web site just brings up a blank web page; page source is empty). One of the threads I saw in my search provided a different source that is working. It is not as extensive as dict.org's service, but it does work.
Open the Dictionary app, then open the Preferences dialog.
Go to the "Sources" Tab and click on the "Add" button.
In the dialog that opens, change the Description to "Chemnitz Server" (at least this is what I did).
Change the hostname to "dict.tu-chemnitz.de".
I did not mess with the other options.
Once you have done this you can click the "Close" button in that dialog.
In the remaining dialog, you will see a new option for "Chemnitz Server".
Select that, and you will have a working dictionary.
dict.org can soon be returned to its proper functionality.
I have Ubuntu 10.04. I had no troubles with gnome until yesterday when I did an auto-update. I did a shutdown of the computer and the monitor was displaying the purple color inherent in 10.04 Ubuntu. Weird I thought. I killed the power. Later I turned on the computer (desktop) and the log-in screen was fine. Gnome came up, but slow. The HD light was on and not shutting off. I clicked an icon and all the icons disappeared. The HD still constantly on. I clicked the panel, the menu dropped down for 1 second then the menu vanished. Further clicks on the panel did nothing. I was unable to get into another terminal. I had to hit the reset button. several attempts later I still have the same problem. KDE works fine. Gnome apps in KDE work fine. I did an update in KDE, seemed a bit better in gnome (meaning it booted up faster) but still the same problem exits.
I just switched back to Ubuntu since I got my SSD and Ubuntu feels now very nice..
I just was confronted with one problem. At my Home PC I was working normally using FileZilla and drag and dropped something from FTP to local machine, then suddently my PC locked and the Screensaver appeard. I mean this Matrix Saver is nice but not when you want to work
Then first I thought it simply locked the workspace and tried to login, but it did not accept any key input, then it just went to standby after some sec..
I really wonder how that can happen, I had deactivated automatic standby in the energy settings, because I don't use it.
