View 8 RepliesI just installed SUSE 11.4/KDE4.6 and some apps - including the pgAdmin3 GUI client app for PostgreSQL database. AFAIK the apps were installed and the correct files appear in their respective folders.
One of the progs I need is pgAdmin3 which exists in the /usr/bin folder. However when I try to launch this from the app launcher the file is not found. (If I start from a terminal command it works correctly).
I'd like to be able to create either a shortcut or app menu entry to launch this app. However if I right click on the file (in the Dolphin fm) there is no 'Create Shortcut' option. AFAIK I though this used to work.
I want to mount my partition that was previously under Windows. I have mounted it through YaST2 to /docs with ext4, made formatting, the folder is shown, but I can not create any file or enter any folder on it (however I can enter folder /docs where only 1 folder "lost and found" exists.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've put openSUSE several times in USB flash drives. I've used the old method with dd ... and the new one with dd_rescue ..., shown in SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE This way a partition is created (sdb1 or sdc1 or ...), with the Linux file system (ID: 83). One of the problems of this system is that all the data of the pendrive is deleted. Another problem is that sometimes openSUSE doesn't load completely and I cannot use it. And another of the problems is that even if I create another partition (for example to make the Live USB persistent and "remember" the configuration of my computer) and I put some of my photos, songs, films there when I plug the pendrive in a computer running Windows XP I cannot access the data. (What about Vista and 7?)
Other Linux distros can be put in pendrives using the FAT file system (for example W95 FAT32 (LBA), ID: c). This way my personal data or files (photos, documents, ...) can be opened from a computer running Windows XP (and the personal data is not erased when putting the Linux in the pendrive). So I would like to know how to create a Live USB drive with personal files that are avaiable for many Operating Systems, including Windows XP. Perhaps the solution is to put openSUSE in a FAT file system, or put it in Linux file system but create another partition with FAT file system (for this openSUSE should avoid the 1st partition, sdX1, that should be for the personal data, so Windows XP can access it).
I am trying to install the Epson Stylus SX115 printer/scanner.
I have downloaded the driver since opensuse11.2 couldn't auto install it. I log in as root and execute the installer but it cant create files or folders. Example(dont know how to copy from the pips window):
Install pips-snx110_3.7.0-2_i386.deb. ()
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/local/EPAva/printer/snx110/uninstall-snx110.sh': No such file or directory
chmod: cannot access `/usr/bla bla bla
bla bla bla bla
Startup ekpd-tool...
installation is complete... (yeah right^^)
I have four PCs in my house that are running opensuse 11.2 and I want to create a home network to share files, scanner and printer.

I am not too concerned about fancy menus or anything like that. I just want something my parents can stick in their DVD-VHS combo and hit the "Play" button. I don't know where to begin looking. Has anyone done this? Is there any kind of a How-To or something? What Linux tools exist for doing this?

Aborted (core dumped) I'm following the Fedora Bible (2010 edition) and I'm trying to get KDE up. This is what it says to do: After running switchdesk or switchdesk-gui, you need to perform one other task. As root, edit or create the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop. Add the following lines to the file:
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
However, I receive that error. Does it want me to log in as root? I tried and it wouldn't let me, so I tried looking up how to do it, and I needed to change another text file with su (which is my problem in the first place). Just to be clear, this error occurs in any directory that I'm in. (home, or otherwise)
I received a popcorn hour set top box for Xmas, and I am trying to figure out the best way to convert my extensive DVD collection to MKV files to play on the PCH.
I know I could just create an ISO of the DVD, but that would take up 4-8 gig per movie, where from what I've read, MKV offers GREAT audio and video quality at a fraction of the space.
Is there any software packages out there for linux that would allow me to rip my DVD's to MKV? if so, will they allow me to just rip the movie part of the disc, and not the extra's or menu?
Is there any easy-to-use program for ubuntu like handbrake or autogk for windows?
Or which software do you think is the best for creating avi or mkv files on linux?
i want to know how to create .po files with gnu utilities??there are several things which i want to know--
1.how to download gnu utilities?
2.how to use xgettext for extracting the main lines and how this xgettext works??
3.i know that msgmft is used for converting the po to mo but what is this(msgmft)??
I have tried a few methods and have not been able to burn a dvd yet. I can create the files that would go on the dvd. I first created a slide show using OpenShot. I saved it as a avi. First off, is this the correct format? Also, I have other files from other methods that end in .mov. Is this the correct format?
Can I combine the two formats of .avi and .mov on the same dvd ( have not even gotten to this point yet, but figured I might as well ask up front )? To burn the dvd, I tried qdvdauthor. It crashed on me after I autogrouped two files. Also, I tried k3b and DeVeDe. I was able to create files, but I still could not get them onto a dvd. I tried to take the files from k3b and DeVeDe and create a DVD in Brasero. Brasero just closes. No error, no success message.
How do I get files on a dvd in Ubuntu? I would even be happy with tutorials or links of software that was worked. Also, I will don't know how to get an audio cd burned in Ubuntu yet.
while i am reading the CIS guide for RHEL, i came across this section, which is on "Create ftpusers Files".
The code:
if [ -f /etc/ftpaccess ]; then
for NAME in `cut -d: -f1 /etc/passwd`; do
if [ `id -u $NAME` -lt 500 ]; then
echo $NAME >> /etc/ftpusers

Can anyone point me to a well working peace of software (free will be preferred) that can convert text-files into pdf.

creating a new website project in the var/www folder. I open jedit and try to save a folder or file inside var/www using jedt and it refuses to let me create or save anythink in the var/www directory.
I have used the terminal to create a new folder and file inside the var/www directory and when i open the file with jedit or gedit and write some code into it it wont save the code either. I am used to just creating a new directory and saving files into it with ease using windows so this is puzzling me a little. I also installed lamp server through the terminal and the phpmyadmin folder installed somewhere different from the var/www file.
I am running the new Natty install of Ubuntu. I always seem to have this particular problem, particularly with any ubuntu/kubuntu installs, but not other distros.
Basically, I'm trying to run a program -- a text-based game server. The server needs to be able to create new folders and write and delete files within its own directories in order to work.
However, no matter what I try to set in permissions, the program always spits out errors saying it was denied. I have set the directories so that any user/program can write/delete in them, and it still doesn't work.
i was wondering if there is someway on my ubuntu server to create and edit .php files? Sorry if it is a nooby question.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have lately been converting all my Ubuntu installs to Debian. Kind of like a revival meeting. Basically I am wiping the ~/.whatever files from the /home partition and saving any that might be handy later. Save any files from the / partition that I might want something from (/var/cache/apt/archives for packages installed, /usr/share/backgrounds and so forth). The last one I am working on is a little different. It is the first install (successful) install I ever did, Ubuntu 8.04, and it is ext3 on one partition. I did the above things as on the others but it was all on one partition. Fired up my netinstall disk for squeeze and installed on 2 partitions. One new one for / ext4 and the old partition not formatted, mounted as /home on ext3.
Did a base install with only the system utilities added by the taskel business at the end of install (like always). Rebooted to that install. Every thing seems to work at the basic level. My passwords worked, both for the text user login and then the root password when I ran su so that I could purge nfs-common (it has given me problems on every install for some reason). Came back here to my usual Debian testing install, fired up boinc and then the chroot environment for the new convert. Installed gnome-desktop-environment and some other things, all from a list that I have used before in just this manner.
Go back to boot to the new one, every thing rolls fine, get the GDM3 login, enter password. "Can't access ICEauthorization". Have to Ctrl+Alt+b out. Back here I check the /home/tom directory for that install and hit Ctrl+H and there are no hidden files. Run "dpkg-reconfigure -a" to no effect. Try adding my user again and that, of coarse dose not work because the user already exists. One other thing is that if I boot to recovery it does show the message to login or hit Ctrl+D but does not stop with a prompt. Shows a couple other things and stops. Ctrl+Alt+B to get out once and had to unplug once.
