I need to extract a tarball but unfortunately this error occurred when I tried it
# tar zxvf toolchain.tar.gz
tar: Skipping to next header
gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
tar: Child returned status 1

Is there a way that I can recover or extract the tarball? I tried to gunzip first but to no avail as well.
I have a basic question of awk.
Code:
var=/test/build/create/sls
echo $var | awk '{ FS = ":" ; print $NF }'
/test/build/create/sls
I am trying to extract last column from the above awk one liner.
Im trying to extract the href of a <link> tag from a html page however as some links contain further preferences I seem to be unable to extract them, do you have any idea how I can write this: Link:

I recently downloaded vlc to my Linux OS distro Ubuntu 10.10. player, but am unable to skin it. I have dl'd several packages and they will not extract, even from root. Every time I attempt to extract the .vlt files from zip, I briefly see the extraction progress bar followed by this error: "An error occurred while extracting files."

I also tried extracting the file to another folder with success, but when I tried dragging and dropping the folder to the htdocs folder I had no luck. I cant write to the folder.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am very visual when browsing for files, so the icon that is displayed is crucial to me. At the moment it seems that the mime-type is the overriding factor for displaying the icon in Dolphin and Konqueror rather than any content. There appears to be something for GNOME for this.

I have problems getting a NJY touch screen (LINK) to work that I purchased a while back off ebay. Of course I let myself be fooled by the claims of the manufacturer that it works with openSUSE and did not realize that their drivers (DRIVERS) only go up 9.2 and only 32bit until it was already too late.
The first problem is that I cannot even get the .sh file to extract the driver without giving me errors and all attempts to manually extract the embedded tgz file have failed miserably. The technical support of the manufacturer is extremely limited regarding driver/installation; though they quickly respond to emails, all I got was "try the driver on our download page" - as well as answers along the line "64bit is way too advanced - nobody uses it anyway"
The panel and the controller themselves work, I could get them to work on a WinXP test box. I was hoping that given the multitude of similar panels out there there might be another way of getting it to work...
When I plug it in, dmesg reports:
[16691.691059] usb 3-3: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
[16691.882579] usb 3-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0eef, idProduct=0001
[16691.882585] usb 3-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[16691.882588] usb 3-3: Product: Љ

extract that driver from the file on the manufacturer's website? If that works, is there any way to use a 32bit driver in a 64b system? Or do you think it's possible to use any of the other manufacturers' drivers by adjusting some parameters - they look pretty identical and should not differ too much?
From what I gather the lsusb output is quite similar if not identical what other people get with other controllers.
Firefox informed me that I should get the latest version. I naively listened to that voice, and was taken to a download screen. I downloaded it. I was hoping for a self-installer, because I'm used to windows. It opened in KPackageKit, or something named similar. I extracted it to my documents, because frankly, I have no idea where to extract it to. Anywhere's I've looked says that most software comes as a package, which you can search for and install in YaST. I searched for "firefox", and nothing new came up. how to extract things to the right place/install them correctly with YaST?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to extract a config from a working kernel..that much was pretty easy..all ya gotta do is "cp /proc/config.gz ." which will put it in whatever directory you're currently in and then do a "gzip -d config.gz" to get the config file.
Now...after that it gets a bit tricky..Linus says you should never compile a kernel in /usr/src/ because those header files in ../include should never change. He says you should extract a new kernel gz in your home directory and compile it there. I tend to agree (who am I to argue?). Anyway..whereever your sources are this is where you need to copy the config file...
Like this...my home dir is "/home/dart". So I would put the kernel sources there under "/home/dart/linux". I would cd to /home/dart/linux and do "cp /proc/config.gz ." then "gzip -d config.gz" which should leave you with a file called "config", then "mv config .config"
Now here's where I run into a problem..when I do "make xconfig" I get this...
Tried to install the qt3-devel packages from CD but guess what? I ran into cdrom errors which is what I was trying to fix in the first **** place...catch 22 eh?
Elsewhere is my question about 11.3. I have had to abandon that and 11.3 as my RAM is too small. Now, for the first time in many years, I find it necessary to extract specific data from received .pdf files. According to OpenOffice, editing of these files is only possible from version 3.2. My concern is whether this later vesion will be compatible with 11.2.OpenOffice installed is 3.1.1.4-1.1.4-i586. The same question has been directed to their Forum.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUp until an hour ago, my openSUSE 11.0 KDE 3.x Konqueror had the usual Ark archive extraction options on the context menu. An hour ago, during an extraction operation, Ark and/or KWin crashed and I had to log back in.
Now the Ark extraction options are no longer on the menu. All I have is the Ark "Extract To..." option.
What happened and how can I fix it? And yes, I have all the required integration plugins, etc., the thing was working fine for the last two years. Now it's broken. Where is the config file or lock file or whatever that I need to find to fix this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've tried to Google my way through this one, but I'm a very novice Debian user (about 4 days) and can't find a straight answer that doesn't go over my head. I'm using the stable Squeeze release of Debian with the xfce desktop environment and having trouble opening .rar files (.cbr in particular) I just transferred from my memory stick through any methods I've searched out.
Currently, I'm using Comix to try and read the .cbr(s), and would like to use Squeeze (the archive manager) to extract. Of course, I'll take what I can get if these are a problem. When I open a .cbr with Comix, all pages are [x] icons, but there are no errors. Trying to extract with squeeze gives "command exited with status 256."
I won't be back online for about 8 hours, but I'll be taking my laptop with me to work in the morning to follow up on suggestions.
Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 is turning out to be dream for me. I am loving it, except few of the old things are gone. I don't care about the not so important stuff but I do care about the Extract here menu option, that I used to have before. I did checked I have latest unrar installed but still I don't see in Nautilus 3.0.2 context menu Extract Here option to unrar compressed files. So, I have to use the Archive manager which I want to avoid. Other feature I am missing is status bar in desktop (bottom bar) any idea how to get that back on gnome 3.

I've been trying to download DJL for a while now and I keep getting error messages. I've been looking at instructions on how to do it and I do what they say. I download it and then I extract it. I think I'm getting confused on where I need to extract it to. I'm very new to this and I'm trying to learn. I've been extracting it to my desktop... then I enter into the terminal sh djl.sh and it gives me sh: Can't open djl.sh. I have the newest version of Ubuntu.

View 7 Replies View RelatedFor about three months I've been going up and down the internet looking for a solution to this problem... Basically I take this distance learning course. Every lesson is sent to me via email in PDF format and it includes many audio examples which are embedded in the file. The problem is none of the Ubuntu readers seem to recognize it, and the Adobe reader says I need a plug-in which does not exist for my system. I quote: "We're sorry, but the third-party media player required to play the selected media file in your Adobe PDF document isn't available for your system". I've been taking this course for two years and I still have two more to go. I contacted the company that sells this course and they were as puzzled as I am... Is there a way to extract the audio from the PDF? Or alternatively open it with another application? I would hate to have to go back to windows for this one issue...
