OpenSUSE :: Print Tray In 11.2 With KDE?
Dec 8, 2009
I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 with KDE via DVD. I've checked media for errors. Installation went fine and so far the OS is great and is pleasing me better than Kubuntu.
Except for printing.
I have an Epson Printer plugged in a Wireless router via LPD wich always worked fine. In 11.2 I installed the printer and, on first printing, I noticed I got no tray icon. I had to go to CUPS to manage printing. I got an error in one of the prints. I canceled it in CUPS, but after that I was unable to print again. I always got an LPD backend error. I had to turn it physically off and on to get it to work again.
With Kubuntu I installed the printer via KDE manager and I always managed print jobs without a problem. I never had to touch the printer - except to get the jobs, of course
So,
1) How do I get a systray icon for my printing jobs? Is it possible to manage print jobs without going to CUPS?
2) Why is it choking like that? Is it just with me?

I am having troubles with my printer.
I have to use the manual feed, as the tray jams.
When set to manual feed, it prints fine in B&W and color.
However, page 2 goes from manual to tray 1! One page at a time works great.
FC 13, recent install, Dell 3100 cn printer USB.

It should be a simple thing to change to print from tray 2 instead of tray 1. Tray 1 is a manual feed tray, how do I change this?

I'm trying to print from tray 3 on a HP 4015 DN with 2 extra papertrays (making 4 trays in total), but no matter what I try it always ends up printing from tray 2. I've tried setting up the printer via Webmin and CUPS, but it makes no difference. The distribution I use is CentOS 4, but I also tried it using CentOS 5. Is there anybody around how knows how to solve this problem?

I have a strange problem about the system tray that I hope someone else solved ...I have 11.4 64bit with all the new up-dates installed and sometimes the system tray Stops hiding.I have the option to hide the system tray and it just stays there.I noticed this sometimes happens when the show plasma dashboard or show desktop widgets are used.Is there a "cure" for this? Does someone have the same problem ?Another issue is that in my install the /home mount point was mounted on top of an older install of Opensuse.

11.2/gnome. After playing a video DVD (mplayer or vls), rt-clicking the desktop icon to eject, then closing the tray I can't open it again by pushing the tray's button. From terminal, if I login as su, I can restore function with eject -T. Kind of a pain, any easy fixes for this?

I have a few problems with my openSUSE 11.3 (I were using openSUSE 9 ages ago, then I moved to Debian, jet after few years I though way not to give openSUSE another chance ).
Basically all is great except for 1 little annoying problem - system tray.Applications like Amarok, Network Manager, SUSE updater, etc just does not show up in system tray! Amarok keeps playing music after I minimalize it to tray, but its no where to be found XD.
I'm using the following repositories: download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.3/ download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.3/ packman.unixheads.com/suse/11.3/
Do you know a command for zypper to install newest packages, ignoring branding (from who package is)? That is one of things that truly is a pain, and which I never experienced while using Debian.

It happens regardless of which DVD I put in the tray.
Initially, openSUSE recognizes that the DVD is, in fact, there. I go to any one media player, play the DVD, and exit when I'm done.
And then the DVD is gone. As far as openSUSE is concerned, anyway. I cannot eject the tray to remove the DVD, which prompts a total reboot.
Is there any way to dispose of this problem?

After upgraded to 11.3. Do a operation that active a network node, the Knetworkmananger will active a display on "Task Bar" (see figure 1). And it can't be minimized to "System Tray Panel", just can't be minimized to "Task Bar".
And the network list display pops up without all display some time (see figure 2), it's very boring.
If I kill the Kneworkmananger and restart it again, it will just have a Icon on "System Tray Panel" normally. But if it change to another network node automatically or I change it by clicking the icon, the display on "Task Tar" will appear and can't be resume to "System Tray", just like mentioned above.
I don't know why have this problem, I tried to reinstall the Knetworkmanager, but the problem also exist.

OpenSuSE 11.4 --- 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux So recently in the last couple of days my NetworkManager Icon has disappeared from the "System Tray" on the Taskbar, even after a reboot. I have tried doing: Alt+F2 then typing "nm-applet" and nothing happens. Also tried in the terminal typing "nm-applet" and I get:
Code:
# nm-applet
An instance of nm-applet is already running. I am connected to the internet so I know it is working but how do I get the icon back? I would like to be able to switch between connection types (i.e. wlan0 or eth0 etc...) but can't do it without it (well easily anyway, probably could switch through the terminal but I would rather not). Also, on another note I remember earlier in the week reading a post that someone had the same problem, and they told him to Alt-F2 and type "nm-applet", which did work for me once but now it is not.
***And I do remember accidentally deleting something involving NetworkManager from the "Startup Applications" app. Can't remember exactly what it said but I do remember it had the word "-disable" at the end of the command. --> If anyone has NetworkManager icon in their system tray could you please look at your "Startup Applications" and tell me what the one for NetworkManager's command says?

No applications will show in my system tray anymore except the defaults. I've checked the entries and touching those had no effect. In fact, the programs I lost the icons too were in the entries, under "system tray settings" and so I set them to all always show. After doing so the applications actually disappeared from my entries entirelSome of my applications open up directly to the tray and I can't get to them at all anymore! They were all working previously until I moved my panels around.

Wondering if any one else is having this problem lately under 11.4. My Skype does not want to launch any more. When I click to open Skype, the tray icon will pop up for 1 second and then just disappear. Have tried launching from command line to see if there are any messages, but it just says aborted when you try launch it.
I noticed this started happening randomly when I had the laptop in hibernate and then would resume, Skype would then just disappear and then I would just relaunch it and it would be find again.

I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.
Code:
# Show troubleshooting information in error_log.
LogLevel debug
[code]...

Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.

I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:

xxx@xxx:~$ xpdf

***** CropBox = ll:0,0 ur:611.976,791.968
***** Rotate = 0
Segmentation fault
Converting to .ps also is blank.

My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.
