OpenSUSE :: Replace Knetworkmanager With Wicd?

Sep 10, 2010

Wanted to replace knetworkmanager with wicd due to some intermittent connection problems that we had.

Did a search from opensuse search page and comes up with this

Index of /repositories/X11:/xfce:/nilda/openSUSE_11.3

Understand that this should be safe to use.

why is wicd not in opensuse's own default repository?

Dig a little deeper and found this link

Index of /repositories/system:/wicd/openSUSE_Factory/x86_64

Believe this is opensuse's own repository. But why is is not part of the default repository that is available to all users after install?

Question 3 How can I better understand the opensuse's repository. Are there good site/articles that give clear explanation on opensuse's repository

Ubuntu :: Replace OpenSUSE But Keep WinXP?

Apr 8, 2010

I've got a laptop with Windows XP Professional and OpenSUSE on it. I want to install Ubuntu in place of OpenSUSE, but keep WinXP intact.

The choices Ubuntu presents are to install it in addition to the two existing operating system partitions, completely erase the hard drive and install Ubuntu, or create custom partitions.

I'm assuming I'd have to do the latter, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Add A New HDD More RAM And To Replace Video Card?

Aug 23, 2010

I am a newbie on Linux so please give me detailed answers! I am very pleased with OpenSUSE. I installed it without any problem on my desktop and it works very nice. At this time I use a dual boot system, because I still need Vista for some software but gradually I spend more and more in Linux and hopefully one day I will not need anymore Windows.

I desperately need to do some hardware upgrades. I simply want to add a new HDD, some more RAM and to replace my video card. I did this many time under Windows... could you tell me what I have to expect doing this in a dual boot system Vista + OpenSUSE 10.2 ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Replace GRUB With Multiple Distros

Jun 21, 2011

I have used the following

Code: #Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: none# title Ubuntu 10.04 booting via symlinks kernel (hd0,6)/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST9500325AS_6VE3ZHX6-part7 ro quiet splash initrd (hd0,6)/initrd.img for Ubuntu for some time. Can this symlinks-booting technique (with the appropriate partition numbers/names) be used for LinuxMint and/or Fedora ?

Currently, I have one PC with Ubuntu's GRUB2 managing multiple distros (openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora) with Windows 7. I would like to replace it with the openSUSE GRUB, and the Ubuntu, LinuxMint and Fedora are rarely used.

OpenSUSE Network :: Replace Windows AD Domain In Suse?

May 29, 2010

At home I am using a Windows Server 2003 as Domain controller with Active Directory. My "client" computers are all currently running Windows XP. They all require CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and the user to enter their credentials before they will allow logon. Shared files reside on various other Server 2003 machines and have restrictions on so only specific users can access certain resources.

For example, I have the family finances and other important documents in a share named 'Private-Files', only members of the 'PrivateFiles' global group have access. Likewise, I have my movies sorted into their appropriate age categories - after all, I don't want my 5 year old son accidentally watching Aliens! So this all works but as you can imagine, the copies of Windows XP and Server 2003 are far from legitimate. I want to go legal and the only real way I can afford to do this is to switch over to Linux.

I have used Suse, Ubuntu, Fedora and a few other distros in the past and found that for ease of use, I want to use Ubuntu on the desktop computers but power the servers with Open Suse. The problem is, although I can install the OSes, I have no idea where to proceed from there - for example, how do I create a Domain in Suse? Where and how do I create domain users and groups? How do I set permissions on shares for the domain users?

OpenSUSE Install :: Hard Drive To Replace Old One That Contained The /var And /home Directories?

Apr 25, 2010

I am installing a new hard drive to replace my old one that contained the /var and /home directories. I don't want to copy the whole directories, especially from home because there is a lot I don't need in it.What I need to do is set the mount points for the two partitions I have made on the new drive to /var and /home, but it will not let me do this with the other drive still running. I can't unmount /var and /home while the computer is running, and I would guess that having two drives with /var and /home on them would not work.

So, how can I set the mount points on the new drive and copy the files I need from the old to the new one? It would seem that would require two /home partitions to be mounted at the same time, but I don't think that is possible. I am sure there is some way, probably many ways knowing Linux so please,

OpenSUSE Hardware :: How To Clear Proprietary NVidia Driver And Replace With Nouveau Driver

Jun 13, 2011

There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed. The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.

Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

I want to know how to replace an icon with another one, not to install a new theme, but simply change one icon in the theme I already have installed. The thing is I like the standard ubuntu mono-dark icon theme; one of the pre-installed ones, but there is one icon (the computer icon to be specific) that I want to change. Is it as simple as going to the location which I believe is /usr/share/icons/gnome/ubuntu-mono dark and then deleting the icon currently used for computer, and replacing it with another or would I have to change a config file too?

In any case i never like the look and feel of 10.04 as compared to earlier versions. I have made the bootable CD for 10.10, but now how do i go about installation so as to replace 10.04. I do not want to disturb my vista as there is lot of crucial data.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - How To Replace LibreOffice

Jul 15, 2011

I've been using ubuntu off and on for a while now and haven't gone in depth yet but have recently made the complete transfer from windows. I've been loving it however, I'm trying to link libreOffice Base to a mysql account on my netbook for a course in school but am not getting form controls. I've noticed that these comments were made in the software center and in many forums including this one I believe. I haven't seen a decent response to any of the other posts I saw and have been having other minor issues with libreOffice but have tolerated them so far. This just seems like nobody tested it at all.

I was trying to see what alternatives there were to libreOffice for 11.04. It turns out that it is a total nightmare trying to install and use any other software suite on ubuntu. I purged libreoffice but still cannot successfully install and use openoffice or gnomeoffice from the software center. I search online and in forums and all I see are articles and posts explaining how to ditch other suites and install libreoffice but I'm really trying to do the opposite at this point. I really want to love ubuntu but it is being very difficult to do so right now.

General :: Making RPM Replace Another One

Jul 12, 2011

I want to make an rpm which when installed as an update causes another rpm to be removed. I'm fairly sure this is possible because I have seen LibreOffice rpms install as updates replacing OpenOffice rpms in the process without any interaction being required. However I'm unable to figure out how to do it, even after having looked at the spec file for such a LibreOffice rpm.

I have package gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg installed. I have another package called multimedia installed. I've built a new version of multimedia which includes the gstreamer ffmpeg plugin so I don't need the gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg package installed any more. I've tried using Provides and Obsolete in the spec file of the new multimedia package. E.g.

Code:
Provides: gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg
Obsoletes: gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg <= 0.10.10
(I've tried it with and without version numbers.) Whatever I put in the spec file, when I try and install the new multimedia package as an update zypper says

Code:
$ zypper up -y multimedia
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
Resolving package dependencies...

Problem: multimedia-1.1-1.i586 obsoletes gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg <= 0.10.10 provided by gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg-0.10.10-0.i686
Solution 1: replacement of gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg-0.10.10-0.i686 with multimedia-1.1-1.i586
Solution 2: do not ask to install a solvable providing multimedia > 1.0-2
Selecting an option manually is no good, I need the update to happen without user interaction.
