OpenSUSE Network :: Start KNetworkManager At Boot?
Apr 10, 2010
I made a brief foray into IceWM g which I used tradition ifup" instead of KNetworkManager. I switched back to KDE and even though I have re-enabled "user controlled with network manager" KNetworkManager still doesn't run at KDE login. The connection's fine and I can start it up myself and it works. What is the best way to set it back to run at login so I'm automatically connected to the network?

I'm configuring a computer for someone and I don't know the wireless network they will be using. (They are not technical.) I've setup networking to use NetworkManager. It works just fine. However, Knetworkmanager won't startup at boot/login. Therefore, the network doesn't startup automatically. I have to click on the icon in the menu to start it.That works well, but it should be configurable to startup automatically.I've searched this forum for answers and don't find any good ones. It seems there isn't an answer or there is a bug in KDE 4.x. (I'm using KDE 4.3.x)

Since two week the knetworkmanager needs 3 minutes after login to start and connect. On an other computer (x86) it works fine. What could be the reason for this? I use opensuse 11.3 x64 and yes i need the network manager. Ifup isn't practicable for me.I have read in some thread to start the networkmanager at boot time and as root, but i don't think this is necessary.

..i'm running 11.2, kde 4.3.i updated my laptop yesterday, and now i'm unable to connect to the internet wirelessly.the network ger icon that was once in my system tray is no longer there, and i have been unable to add it back.more importantly, when i try to run network manager i get the following:KNetworkManagertart because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in the future."
i'm completely lost, especially because network manager was working fine yesterday, and all day today until a few hours ago. i made no manual configuration changes, so i have not clue what the thing is talking about...i'm now stuck in a corner of my house

I am using a fully up to date openSUSE 11.3 and today, I decided to upgrade my KDE 4.4.4 to Factory. The update went without a hitch, everything continued to work, including all of the items in my workspace. So now I am running KDE 4.4.95 and it looks nice. I like the new System Settings where the advanced tab is gone and everything is presented in a single window.
The only snag I have hit so far, is that Knetworkmanager no longer displays the network that I am connected to when I right click its icon in the tray. The screenshot may make clear what I am talking about.I am currently connected via a wireless network, which nm-tool confirms. However, it is not shown in the Knetworkmanager menu.

No improvement since I first reported this problem, I am hoping somebody can now advise.
Using openSUSE11.3 Linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-default i686 with kde 4.4.4 release 3.Problem is the wait of sometimes over 2 minutes before the wifi connection is available. Two questions:-
1. Why does it take so long? Longer by far than it to be with previous openSUSE releases. Much longer than with that other OS!!!2. How do I remove the wallet process. Not needed in present environment so I would like direct connection without having to open wallet. I didn't set this up, it just happened after I had upgraded to 11.3 and I need to know how to disable it to save time.

Since 11.2, I am using Knetworkmanager for getting connected to the internet. But is getting disconnected on its own every now and then. I used Kinternet when I was on 11.1 and it worked fine, Infact I would prefer kinternet over knetworkmanager anyday. But in suse 11.2, having both KDE3 and KDE4 libraries does make system work unexpectdly. I tried installing Kinternet once but after that kontact kept crashing (because of clashes between kdelibs3 and kdelibs4).Can anyone help me finding out the problem in knetworkmanger.. here is entry in /var/log/NetworkManager when I got disconnected..

I've my OpenSuse installed both on laptop and PC.
The kNetworkManager works well on the laptop both on user account and root account. It connects to my mobile broadband fine.
The problem appeared on my PC. When I log into root account - everything seems to be fine, It connects through knetworkmanager - The cellular connection gets activated, I see X and a heart near "Activated". root account reads my DNS'es from resolv.conf
When I only log into the user account (not as root), the knetworkmanager connects - but as I've checked - it seems that it doesn't use the DNS adresses I've entered in resolv.conf (netconfig_dns_policy is set to "") so I can manually add openDNS to the resolv.conf). It just connects -
I did CHMOD the files resolv.conf and config in sysconfig/network - no luck.
The only way to bypass this is logging to root first - connect there, then switch to user while staying connected... but I think it's an annoying solution.
logs contain this when connecting from user account:
Code:
May 16 10:30:52 jaychyl-1-linux pppd[24965]: Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.4/nm-pppd-plugin.so loaded.
May 16 10:30:52 jaychyl-1-linux pppd[24965]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0

For one of the users on my system, knetworkmanager abruptly ceases to autostart once on a while. This happens once in roughly 10-15 days. When that happens, i have to go into .kde4/share/config/networkmanagementrc and manually toggle Autostart=true (from false). This trick works for another 2 weeks or so, before the value of "Autostart" automagically changes to 'false' and i have change it again.I dont mind doing it manually, but the user in question is my mom, and she does not have the know-how to do it herself when i'm not around.

Still a flawed KnetworkManager in the released 11.3.No user control for cabled 10/100 lan ports. Yast config for the eth0 says it can have usercontrol by networkmanager. Oh no it doesn't.It seems to cater for wi-fi users only who get a "enable wireless" tickbox and "manage connections". At least you can stop and start it.Meanwhile cable users who might have a taskbar display for lan traffic can see stuff pouring in, or out and if it's something they don't want they can't do anything about it unless they pull the plug.

I've run into a situation where knetworkmanager tells me networking is disabled. If I switch to the ifup method in Yast then I can get online but when I switch back to user controlled knetworkmanager tells me that networking is disabled.I've actually had this happen twice. The first time I somehow managed to get it working again (I thought it was by right clicking on the icon in the system tray). This time I don't see the same option.Has anybody got any suggestions on how to get knetworkmanager working again.

I just don't get it? I've attempted multiple times to get the knetworkmanager to connect to an unencrypted network, yet it keeps asking for a wep key. However the networkmanager in the Gnome version connects to unencrypted networks just fine. Why won't knetwork manager do the same?

Just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and I have to say it feels great.Only gripe I currently have is the NetworkManager that is starting up very slowly. When I have logged into KDE KNetworkManager applet says that NetworkManager is not running and hence I have no network connection. This is fixed if I start NetworkManager (as root) or just wait a couple of minutes. I have one ethernet interface only, no wireless

I have built 11.2 on several laptops and knetwork manager startup for wireless is not consistent. I can't figure it out. Sometimes the options "Create Network Connection" and "enable wireless" are greyed out. Other times they are fine. What is the secret to getting the options to appear in my window tray all the time? I always select knetwork manager as the default when I do a clean build.

I have an open WEP wireless internet connection with a security key. KNetworkManager can never obtain an IP address from my wireless router, but I know that the router works because Windows can connect correctly and Ubuntu's NetworkManager can connection correctly. Does anyone know what is happening? KNetworkManager just asks for my security again and again and again after it fails to connect.

I have a weird problem on my laptop. Everything works okey on PC though.
I'm using kNetworkManager on my OpenSuse 11.2 on PC.
Everything works fine there with the following settings:
1. Make a new GSM Connection in kNetworkManager and enter settings there
2. Edit etc/sysconfig/network/config file and set .....DNS_Policy from "auto" to ""
3. Enter openDNS to /etc/resolv.conf (nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
It works like that on my PC.
I did the same on my laptop. The modem connects fine, but the DNS'es ain't resolved. So skype etc will work, but no pages will open in Firefox for example.
What else should I need to do to make this work?
It's weird it works the SAME way on my PC, but doesn't on my laptop.

My eth0 is not up everytime at boot up. I will need to <service network restart> to get it up.
I have used yast's /etc/sysconfig editor to set /etc/sysconfig/network/config -> MANDATORY_DEVICES to eth0
And I have also added <alias eth0 e1000e> to /etc/modprobe.conf.local
And also set eth0 device to activate device at boot time using Network Card Setup.
But eth0 is still not starting up at boot time. What should I do to get it up at boot time?
I'm using openSUSE 10.3. And no, I'm am unable to move to 11.2

I've configured a pptp VPN using KNetworkManager. It works fine. Now I want to have it started automatically then my network interface is assigned a particular IP from my home DHCP server. I don't need it in other places. I guess there is no such built in functionality, but may be it can be scripted somehow?

I am running openSuse 11.2 on Acer Turion64 x2.
My wireless card is "Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)".
For some reason, networkmanager can not connect to network at all.
In NetworkManager log, it is showing "kernel: [ 28.002378] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready".
I try to find out why it can not connect to network by using knetworkmanager.

I am using an Acer Aspire 5536 AMD dual core laptop with a 64bit installation of Susie 11.4. Using 11.2 I had no problems connecting to the wireless router. As soon as 11.4 was installed, clean install, and the laptop rebooted, network manager failed to start, until manually invoked and then enabling networking through the system tray. Even after this it will not connect to a wired or wireless network sometimes for more than 30 minutes.
