OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound In Amarok Or Banshee?

Feb 5, 2011

Recently upgraded to OS 11.3

Sound is working fine-- I can test my sound card in YAST and get sound when I play audio or video files using kaffine. But when I try to use amarok or banshee I get only silence, even when I just try to play system sounds.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound Using Amarok?

Apr 30, 2011

I added the Packman repository and installed ASF modules for Amarok. Since that point Amarok didn't make a noise, although it actually played music.

- Speakers aren't muted
- sound works fine using banshee and pretty much everything else
- so drivers are up to date

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound With Amarok/LinDVD

Jan 1, 2010

After upgrading my Lenovo T61 to openSUSE 11.2 (64 bit)/KDE 4.3.1.playing mp3/Internet radio ( or DVDs using VLC works fine. When trying to play mp3s/ with Amarok 2.1.1 or when trying to play DVDs using LinDVD there is no sound at all although each player appears to be processing each of the media correctly. When testing sound output with the Amarok settings (backend Xine) I get test sound output with these device types

- HDA Intel (AD198xAnalog)
- Pulse Audio

But none with

- HDA Intel (AD198xDigital)
- HDA Intel, AD198x Digital(IEC (S/PDIF) Digital Video Output).

Could it be that some other sound server, such as ALSA etc is blocking/competing with the audio hardware? How do I get Amarok/LinDVD to output sound?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound In Banshee With 11.2 Gnome 2.28.0?

Dec 12, 2009

i have a fresh installation of opensuse 11.2 32-bit. my soundcard is terratec ewx 24-96. the card is detected in yast, and i can play test sound from the yast/sound panel. all volume sliders are set to maximum values (i have also double checked it in alsamixer).

i *can* hear the sound when doing this test from the gnome terminal:

speaker-test -dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav

however to make this test work:

speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav

i had to remove the asound-pulse.conf file. after removing this file the second test (speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav) works. removing this file also solved the problem of missing sound in videos videos played in firefox. the original contents of the asound-pulse.conf file was:

pcm.pulse {
type pulse
ctl.pulse {

the problem is i can't play any audio files (.wav or .mp3) in banshee.

i am sure the .wav file i use while testing is ok as i can play it with aplay.

when i try playing the .wav file, banshee does not complain about any missing codecs. the slider moves as the file is being played. i have also started banshee with the --debug option, but there were no errors in the output.

so my guess is that banshee is playing the files, it's just that it sends the data to the wrong device/channell or whatever it is.

all of the gstreamer packages i have installed are from the packman repository.

when i run gstreamer-properties, the only setting on the audio tab that gives me sound is: alsa (for the plugin) and default (for the device).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Or Little Sound In Banshee / Totem And Even Vlc

Oct 11, 2010

Just installed Open Suse 11.3 on my dual-boot PC ( and Ubuntu 10.10). Installation process of both OS goes well and smooth. But, unfortunately when I tried to play movies on both default applications (Banshee and Totem) in Open Suse Gnome 11.3, I've got the message to search for XVID MPEG-4 decoder. And till now, I still unable to search for it, because there's still no sound or a little sound on both players.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound From Amarok 2.3.1 But VLC, SMplayer Is Fine

Aug 15, 2010

I have a weird problem where the playing any track from Amarok results in no sound being heard from the speakers. However, from everywhere else - YaST audio configuration, openSUSE startup, VLC, SMplayer et al - the sound is heard fine. I have no clue as to how I can go about fixing this. Hoping someone could assist me with this. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520. Here's the link to the output of [URL] My Smolts system profile: Show Box my /var/log/messages keeps recording this:

pulseaudio[4866]: alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device front:0: Device or resource busy

whenever I try to play something on Amarok I'm running on openSUSE 11.3, KDE 4.5 ( though this problem existed on KDE 4.4 as well).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sound On Amarok Or SMPlayer - Missing

Nov 28, 2009

I have 11.2 installed on a dual core 64 bit system. The sound works when I use Yast to look at the sound device and select "play test sound". I haven't gotten anything out of Amarok or SMPlayer. I followed the guide listed in other posts to update the system although I could not seem to solve all the dependences. When I use SMPlayer to play an MP3 file, I get a message saying that I am missing

I tried the following: Code: ldd /usr/bin/mplayer | grep libdirect => not found This seems to be the only missing library. The interesting thing is that if I search my system for libdirect, I find that I have Is this a newer rev or a different library because of my platform?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.3 GNOME, TOTEM And BANSHEE No Sound On .mp4 And Quicktime?

Jul 17, 2010

I just did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 32bit GNOME on my notebook and everything runs fine...yet

But there is an issue with the sound playback on mp4's and quicktime (apple trailers) that I was not able to fix.

I added the Packman 11.3 repo via Yast -> Software Repositories -> Add... -> Community Repositories

Then I used zypper to get the related gstreamer-plugins ffmpeg faad vlc w32codec-all libmp4v2...

So far the media playback seem good, except the issue of "no sound with gstreamer related media players on quicktime and mp4"...

I set all available/related/installed packages to "Packman" (Yast -> Software Management), did zypper refresh + zypper up but I am simply not able to get sound from gstreamer...It works fine in VLC though!

Some google and forum research showed that it's an issue that has occurred over the recent years but I could not found a proper working solution.

If I run totem from the terminal I get the following output (plus a windows asking for permission to search for the required codec 'MPEG-4 AAC Decoder'...but it is not able to find one!):

# totem --debug --play TV-20100717-2030-1301.h264.mp4
(totem:6888): Totem-DEBUG: Received SaveYourself(SmSaveLocal, !Shutdown, SmInteractStyleNone, !Fast) in state idle
(totem:6888): Totem-DEBUG: Setting initial properties
(totem:6888): Totem-DEBUG: Sending SaveYourselfDone(True) for initial SaveYourself
(totem:6888): Totem-DEBUG: Received SaveComplete message in state save-yourself-done
(totem:6888): Totem-DEBUG: totem_playlist_add_one_mrl (): TV-20100717-2030-1301.h264.mp4 (null) (null)

The last Message is interesting "All missing plugins are blacklisted..." hmmm I did not blacklist any plugins...where can you see these blacklist? Is that the point, the plugin is there but blacklisted?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Pausing Amarok With Phonon-backend-vlc Kills Sound?

Mar 29, 2011

Play a song in Amarok and then press the space bar to pause. Press the space bar again to resume and Amarok starts playing again with the status bar moving and the timer counting down, but no sound. If I move to the next song, sound starts working again. Or if I double click on a different song, sound works. If I use the xine backend, the problem goes away. I'm using Amarok-2.4 and KDE 4.6.1.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound After Starting Amarok?

Feb 9, 2010

If I run Amarok right after ubuntu starts, and then start a movie, there is no sound. It doesn't matter that the playback in Amarok is paused, stopped or active, there is no sound in the other player. Even if i exit Amarok, i don't get any sound. It is important to note that the other player is definitely a gnome application. I tried playing a song in Rhythmbox after Amarok was started, or play a video in Movie Player: no sound. I get sound from KDE video players, but the video doesn't work there, so that isn't an option. The only explanation i can think of, is that Amarok somehow "occupies" the sound drive, and it remains "occupied" even after the application was closed. Because if i start Movie Player before Amarok, this problem never appears.

I was playing with Banshee and installed the banshee-extension-soundmenu package to get the Banshee control in the Indicator Applet Sound Menu.

I had so many problems with Banshee crashing and using up my system resources that I decided to stop using it. I deselected the Sound Menu option from Banshee's Preferences>Extensions, then I uninstalled the banshee-extension-soundmenu package.

However after this the Sound Menu is still showing the Banshee control. Is there a way to get rid of it?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Cannot Get Banshee To Rip CD To MP3 On 11.4

I'm using Opensuse 11.4 with Gnome 3 (magic!) and have installed Banshee which is always brilliant. However, though I'm pretty sure I've installed all the requisite codecs, I cannot get it to rip my CD's to MP3. The option is not in the drop down menu, only flac, ogg, wav, and wavpack are available. Usually there's the option to rip to MP3 to accompany those options. The odd thing is it's playing other MP3's I've already got just fine.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.2 - Which Amarok Version To Use

Feb 1, 2010

I am not having any luck with the 'out-of-the-box' version of Amarok on 11.2. It is missing a lot of features (syncing with my fuze most notably). So I figured that I would go to the latest version, but the one-click install from backports (2.2.2-4.1) reported that it could not install amarok-xine and amarok-libvisual. It installed anyway, but was not stable at all. I thought that that install process was supposed to do the updates for me. I went back to the 2.1.1 version, but it still crashes pretty frequently.

Trying banshee right now. Anyway, the big question is... do I go up, down, or off for Amarok? I have a Sansa Fuze and would love to sync music with it, but Amarok is not getting the job done right now. I have read of people going back to 1.4, but after my attempt to install 2.2.2, I'm not so sure that I'm doing it right. Should what I did have worked? I'd like to find one that will get album art and transfer it to my fuze as well (folder.jpg is what seems to make it the happiest).
