OpenSUSE :: Kde Can Not Shutdown

Mar 31, 2011

I am using opensuse 11.4 (was recently updated from 11.3). When I try to turn off my computer using kde (Leave->shut down) I receive a gray screen and system can 'stay' in that situation for days.

where to look for log files as well as some command line commands that can be used to force gui(kde-plasma-whatever you call it) to shut down or restart?

OpenSUSE Install :: OpenSUSE 11.4 Delayed Shutdown While Pressing The Shutdown Button?

Mar 12, 2011

I did a live upgrade from 11.3 KDE and observe a following issue. When I press the shutdown button on the laptop it initiates the shutdown and shuts down fine but after a significant delay of time (something like 30 seconds). When I click the shutdown button in KDE it initiates the shutdown instantly. This was not the case in 11.3 where the shutdown worked the same regardless of the method that triggered it

Server :: Shutdown The Nodes From The Master Terminal Using "shutdown -h Now" Get Shutdown?

Dec 10, 2010

I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .

Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

General :: Locate Shutdown Log For Linux Shutdown (RHL 5.1-2.6.18-53.el5PAE)

I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.

I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.

I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.

That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome Shutdown/restart Under 11.2?

I'm running openSUSE 11.2 Gnome Desktop Environment. Whenever I try to either shutdown or restart my machine as a "normal user", I've been logged off instead! When I try to re-login the screen (xorg) freezes. I don't know how to debug this problem. The problem could be related to hal or d-bus or policykit or X-org..... simply I don't know. N.B. I can shutdown and restart my machine only as "super-user" (root).

OpenSUSE :: Augh ... Automatic Shutdown At Wit's End

Jul 19, 2010

after having far too many problems with other brown-coloured distros, I moved my MythTV box to SuSE (what all the other machines here use). Everything is working, EXCEPT for one thing: automatic idle shutdown. I cannot get MythWelcome to shut down the machine automatically (choosing shutdown now from it's menu does work). The log shows sudo: sorry, a password is required to run sudo (sudo -n) or the infamous "no tty and no askpass". (plain sudo)

I have added /sbin/shutdown to the sudoers file, and I can run sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now from the terminal and shutdown without a password... but sudo will NOT run from mythtv. I've even tried adding a special exception to the sudoers file, "Defaults !requiretty" with no luck. This is a dedicated frontend/backend with no user access (doesn't boot a desktop manager; goes straight to Mythtv) so I'm no too worried about potential security; the machine is on a LAN and cannot be accessed from the WAN side.

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Shutdown Or Restart Laptop From KDE

Jan 26, 2011

I had my netbook which is an Acer AspireOne lock up on me once earlier today and after doing a hard shutdown *holding the power button* and booting it back up I noticed that I could no longer reboot the machine from KDE's graphical shutdown button. Basically I click it and it pops up with the 30 second count down and then nothing. However I can run as root,

Code:

Shutdown -r now

and it will comply and reboot. I did notice that rngd was returning an exit status 1 and after some research decided to uninstall it with no change to anything. I decided to attempt and see if it was just a KDE issue as many problems have been, but when I attempted to log into Gnome I got a very nice white screen with one black line where the taskbar should be. Whether they are related or just coincidence I don't know.

I've ran my google researching skills into the ground on this one and I'm tired and a bit grumpy because I haven't been sleeping so it'd be awesome if I could get a heads up, because to my knowledge it's not reporting any errors it just seems to hang without sending the shutdown signals.

OpenSUSE :: Can't Shutdown After Configuring The Session Manager?

Aug 16, 2009

I use:
OpenSuse 11.1 with KDE.

I wish: no session restoring on login and no confirmation dialog on logout i.e. OpenSuse should never ask me, if I click on shutdown and always start with new session.

I do: So, in System Settings -> Advanced-Tab -> Session Manager I choose follow options:

General:
NO Confirm Logout
NO Offer shutdown option

On Login:
YES Start with an empty session

Default shutdown option:
YES Turn off computer
(finally, it goes disabled)

The problem is:Now I can't shutdown my computer by clicking the Shutdown in main menu. I can click it hundred times nothing happens. Could anybody explain me, why???

As an experiment:If I choose YES Confirm Logout and click the Shutdown, I will see the confirmation dialog, but with only one option - Logout.

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.5 Logoff & Shutdown Does Not Work / Solve This?

I'm running OS 11.3x64, KDE 4.5.

After running updates yesterday (Friday) now the Shutdown and Log Off buttons don't work in KDE. This happens with the taskbar buttons, and in the Leave menu. The only way out now is to ALT+F1 into a console, log in as root, and run shutdown. The system will shutdown at that point, but it's pretty inconvenient. I'm using the login manager that installs with KDE (can't remember the name) since Gnome was installed as a secondary desktop.

OpenSUSE :: KDE4.6 Minor - Reboot And Shutdown Do Nothing

Feb 4, 2011

A couple of little niggles seen with KDE4.6. On 32bit install, (openSUSE11.3 was clean install)

-- reboot and shut down do nothing but hibernate and sleep are ok, can only powerdown with su privileges,
-- order of applications in plasma bar change after reboot.

On 64bit install, (openSUSE11.3 was update of openSUSE11.2)

-- slow poweroff overcome with new user profile, (no longer a problem with latest update)
-- inconsistent mouse curser theme, over desktop theme is Oxygen White, over application windows its DMZ
(resolved mouse cursor theme issue on 64bit install.
-- /etc/sysconfig, parameter X_MOUSE_CURSOR="DMZ"
-- and
-- /usr/share/icons/default was a link to DMZ
-- /usr/share/icons/default.kde4 was a link to oxygen
-- changed so that both were linked to DMZ
-- mouse cursor now consistent within windows and across desktop.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Shutdown Gpf Or PREEMPT SMP With 11.3 X86_64?

Dec 10, 2010

Built a new machine 2 weeks ago and installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 on it using the express setup (or whatever it was called). I have always done a manual setup in the past, but wanted to try out the fast way. This is my first experience with openSUSE 64 bit (always used 32 bit in the past). I have used SLES 10 64 bit without problem.

When I shutdown openSUSE the machine does not power off. It has always done this from after the initial install and after any updates. It does reboot just fine. Same behaviour if I shutdown from the GUI or from terminal as root. I either get a General Protection Fault or an OOPS with PREEMPT SMP.I must power off the machine manually and disconnect from power before restarting. System is ASUS M4A78T-E Motherboard, AMD Phenom II X6 1055T CPU, 2 x Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 RAM, EVGA GeForce 8400 GS 512MB I have updated the motherboard BIOS - no change.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - XFCE 4.4.3 Will Not Shutdown Or Restart

Dec 15, 2009

Pressing the shutdown or restart buttons in XFCE simply logs me out and leaves the system running. I did some Googling and it was suggested that by default users don't have permission to shutdown. (not sure how this is a XFCE specific problem in that case but moving on...)

I've taken the following advice:
For a "desktop" system that wants to protect itself from casual attacks (and "puzzled penguins"), but still grant the user control of their system, run the following as "root":
USER=<your_userid>
polkit-auth --show-obtainable | while read OPT; do
polkit-auth --user $USER --grant $OPT
done

Where <your_userid> is the name of your unprivileged account. I wasn't entirely sure how to run it, so I stuck it into a shell script and ran that with the sudo command. Needless to say it hasn't worked. Is there an easy "sure fire" way to fix this problem, hitting the shutdown button repeatedly to test really grates on you after a while. BTW, Pressing the power button on the front of the system shuts it down okay.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded From 11.1 To 11.2 - No Normal Shutdown

Mar 13, 2010

Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.

The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.

OpenSUSE Install :: Migrated To 11.3 - Now Shutdown Freezes Up

I saw someone is having a similar problem with the 64-bit version, but there were no responses. Where do I go from here?

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown Fails To Turn Off The PC?

Nov 17, 2010

this problem is a well known one as far as I have read, but the solution is yet to come.I formatted and installed OpenSuse 11.3 KDE as the only OS on a PC with 768 RAM, two Hard Disks (6+8 GB), mobo Abit BE6, processor Celeron Coppermine 1100Mhz (with slotket adapter), video card Matrox G400+, Sound Blaster Live! Value.HD 1 is set root and ext4 + 1 GB swap, HD2 is /home ext3.The live OpenSuse CD worked fine, shutdown turns off the power, while the installed one won't. I formatted twice, and the problem persist. Reboot works fine.At shutdown, the hard disks are turned off while the screen and power are still on, so I have to press the power button to turn off completely.

Yesterday I wasted all the day with this problem without solving it, I've read many threads but no solution worked. That PC obviously worked fine with both Windows 98 and XP.Those problems are in the "out of the box" installation, without any setting altered.I've tried disabling ACPI, PM control by APM, and power management features in the bios (latest 2001's Award bios for this old mobo).I've set alternatively pci=noacpi, nosmp, apm=power-off, acpi=force in GRUB options. I've updated the distro. I've set value poweroff for HALT in etc/sysconfig. Nothing changed.I've also tried macumba and ancient celtic cerimonies, yet they didn't work.Is it possible to solve this problem or it's a known unsolved bug? Loading OS screen:Those are the final screens after shutdown where it stops
