OpenSUSE Install :: Which Kernel Is Needed Which One To Remove?
Dec 5, 2010
Sorry if it is a dumb question (i'm coming from deb/ubuntu and i'm totally new to rpm - installed Smeegol on a Samsung N150). After some try&error i finally got my Broadcom4313 working but underway to that i got lots of new kernels and now i don't understand not so much anymore.
I think the kernel default-devel it was me installing it using the distribution manager to get working make (for trying to install the original Broadcom driver package; i stopped that attempt because i didn't where exactly to move/cp the built driver).

An app failed to load properly and now i'm stuck in a sequence I don;t understand the solution for.
sudo apt-get autoremove
dpkg was interupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

I've got a warning that reads: There is nothing that provodes libCg.so(VERSION) and it is needed by VirtualLab 6.2.2-.2.2.noarch
And it gives me the options:
-Do not install 6.2.2-.2.2.noarch.
-Break VirtualLab ignoring some of its dependencies.
What should I do?

My openSUSE 11.2 system has periodic running of fsck disabled for ext4 filesystems (Maximum mount count = -1, Check interval = 0). What is the reason for this? Is it because fsck is not necessary on a periodic basis with ext4, and only necessary when errors are detected? Or is it because fsck has problems working on ext4 filesystems?
The ext3 filesystems do have it set (Maximum mount count = 500, Check interval = 5184000 (2 months)). I would like to know why fsck is not set to be activated for ext4.

I did "uname -a" and it's showing that I'm using 2.6.31-16-generic of the Linux Kernel. Now, in the GRUB2 boot menu, it's showing
2.6.31-14-generic & recovery
2.6.31-15-generic & recovery
and the current one: 2.6.31-16-generic & recovery.
I would like to remove the old ones because of the pileup they're creating.
Other info: I have wXP pro as my dualboot OS.

I can't find a Yum command to clean up no longer needed dependencies, you know similar to apt-get autoremove. Or does yum do this with the erase or remove command? btw: yum-clean-all just flushes out the cache right?

I would like to compile my own kernel. I am familiar with how to do it and have done it in the past so I'm not looking for a how to compile a kernel. In the kernel config are many, many options. In the past when I compiled kernels I always wondered about what is needed and used. What is the best way to determine what is currently used, not set or enabled in the existing config, but actually used by my existing kernel?I have a general idea of what is loaded and could do trial and error, turn this and that off, recompile, etc but is there an easier way?

I'm taking a class this semester on Linux and a Fedora 13 DVD came with the book. Just now I've installed Fedora at home and started the updates. I saw a PAE entry in the updates so I went to the Terminal and typed uname -r and I see that the Fedora 13 DVD installed a PAE kernel on my machine that has only 1 GB of RAM.
Why did it do that?
Can I swap out the PAE kernel for a non-PAE kernel? (edit- I'm a Linux noob so I don't know)
Does it really matter?
After the updates I was going to try to install the proprietary Nvidia driver.

I'm trying to find out what files are needed to boot into another kernel.
I know there's vmlinuz* & initrd* but what else is need?
Is is possible to just copy some files to a partition with an already running Ubuntu version, set up grub & boot a different kernel?
I've seen some documentation on building a new kernel but I was wondering since I already have a good running kernel on a different hard drive if I could just move it & test it on another drive without having to build it.

What is the name of kernel optimized for server machine? In my case Firebird database + Apache + PHP?

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.

AGP nVidia 7600GS/512 MB, nVidia driver 190.53, installed from yast.

1. I downloaded wine_gecko-1.2.0-x86.msi to /usr/share/wine/gecko and downloaded wine-1.3.17-1.1.i586.rpm to /usr/share/wine
When I try to install I get message that wine_gecko version>= to 1.1 is needed.

I am on OpenSuSE 11.0 running Firefox 3.0. I want to upgrade Firefox to 3.5 or 3.6 but all I can find in /pub/opensuse/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.0/x86_64 is MozillaFirefox-3.6.0-1.2.x86, or MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE 3.5-3.9.x86.
When I try to install MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE 3.5-3.9.x86 I am told I need to install Firefox 3.5 because of failed dependencies. I have looked around on the internet for an RPM for this version but can't find it. telling me where I can find the correct RPM to install, or advise me with other instructions to wean my old 11.0 system of the old Firefox?
By the way I can not upgrade this system to 11.1 or 11.2 because it is a production machine. However, I debug on this machine using Firebug and I would just like to bring these two tools up to date.

I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)
When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

This is my first time compiling a linux kernel, so before I make any major mistakes, I could use some help in determining which filesystems I absolutely must enable support for. Ext2 is allready in.

I installed the version of ClamAV that is provided by OpenSuse. The problem with that is that when a new version of ClamAV shows up I constantly get complaints when I run both freshclam and clamscan for at least three weeks when my version of ClamAV supplied by OpenSuse goes out of date. So I uninstalled the clamav OpenSuse provides using the GUI software control panel. Then I downloaded the source and the signature from ClamAV. It verified. I first tried to do a ./configure (as root) but it said I needed a clamav user. So I created:
Group: clamav (2001)
User: clamav (2001)
I picked the UID / GID to be that to avoid collisions with what ever you may have. After that the configure, make and install went fine. I then edited both the clamd.conf file and freshclam.conf files in /usr/local/etc. There was a bit of path confusion problem with the old freshclam and the new one so I did a ^D in my su'd xterm, and then su'd again. This time it showed the following for where things are:
[Code]....

System management is locked by the application with pid 9781 (/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2base). Close this application before trying again. I get this after I try and open the software update or Yast with opensuse 11.3. After I installed 11.3 it worked fin for the first big update I did. Then I read about programs that I think will help me make the jump from windows, so I open up my software install and this comes up? I have never played with any Linux OS before and am trying to figure it all out. Seem like years of reading and trying.

I have installed 11.3 and really hashed it. I am getting no where and cannot find my way around. I tried to install as a partition with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Result. I have lost Both Ubuntu and windows with SUSE 11.3 installed and with YAST2 (as superuser) I cannot install belkin to get an internet connection, cannot instal Ubuntu or any thing else. I get the following;
[/media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the centraldirectory and zipfile cannot be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of the /media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe or /media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/Ubuntu 9.10 i386/wubi.exe.ZIP, period
I think I have not only installed this incorrectly but I have something I don't fully understand.
I would like to reinstall Ubuntu and then if I cannot get on with SUSE
