View 7 RepliesFor about a week now I've been seeing mass attempts to relay through postfix and login to dovecot from the same 2 addresses, none are successful due to how postfix/dovecot are configured and I wouldn't be overly worried but my isp have picked up on it and are nagging at me
What ways do people go about just dropping connection attempts from offending addresses/ranges when stuff like that happens? An ideal thing would be something that detects repeated failed attempts from a host or range and subsequently ignore/ban them, perhaps for a specified length of time, something along the lines of denyhosts and fail2ban for ssh would be great Don't know if there's anything out there or just a plain tried and trusted method anyone might use for stuff like this, if not a hint on the most appropriate way to go about it 'manually' would do
i want to upgrade to 11.2, however, i am very cautious about losing my files. there are files on this system which i absolutely can not afford to lose, and they are only on this system. which method of upgrade will be the best, best as in safest.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi have been using linux for about 2 months now , and still can't deal with tar.gz files! i extract the achieve , open the folder , open terminal in that folder , then make and..... nothing i didn't find the make file in firefox 6 tar.gz for example , for other files there was missing libraries , is there a compiler that can do the job simply like synaptic? it is really stupid that every application should have its installation instructions!!!! why there isn't some standardization for all linux distro in this point? deb packages are simple to use , why there isn't a general package system for all linux distro ? or at least a unified system for compiling where i can use the tar.gz files like .deb files?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a working setup of opensuse 11.0, dual booting using grub installed on the home partition. I tried to install 11.3 from the coverdisc of linux format (LXFDVD136). It took 5 goes before the install succeeded. Mostly stopping at the "boot installed system" stage. I put 11.3 on a formatted partition in the same place as 11.0, and put grub there too.
The system will not boot without assistance. I have to use a supergrub disc and tell it which partition to boot. If I use boot linux from supergrub I get the Grub error message 15 file not found. Supergrub CAN find windows and it boots with the win command. Automatic and yast initiated attempts to check for software upgrades are blocked by the application with pid 4587.
An existing Windows 2003 Server hosts a WDS pxe role. A networtk shared directory provides some customized OS.
I have to migrate this server without altered the WDS directory. Is it possible to deal with this stack under Redhat with pxelinux ?
Actually, my tests are negative. But I definitively have to deal with as a requirement. Otherwise an update will be made for each alteration of the OS.
POC : Red Hat 5 64bits, Apache2, Samba3, pxelinux, tftp-hpa.
I had successfully boot a virtual pc under Red hat. But I'm alaways game over with the corporate OS. When I load a pxeboot.n12 file there is an invalid file or corrupt error. When I rename this file as pxeboot.0 (to use pxelinue) the next step is a boot menu. I load a BCD file but after a boot.ini file is required but not present. This file doesn't exits in the current directory.
When I want upgrade and/or install any package from software.opensuse.org I've got error, "Couldn't find XML file" or anything same this.

lets start with mentioning that I am a very satisfied user of a fileserver with a OpenSuSe 11.1 environment, implemented in october-november 2009. The server has the following charateristics:

View 9 Replies View RelatedAll the Ubuntu networking info I can find online talks about Samba and how to deal with a Windows/Ubuntu networks.
I have 4 computers for my family, I just installed Ubuntu (10.04 lts on 2, 10.10 & 11.04) on them. They are all dual boot with XP.
Is there a tutorial that talks about just dealing with an Ubuntu network? I would assume you don't use or need Samba if windows isn't involved?
Also it looks to me that the work-group name is more important to windows. Is it even necessary with Ubuntu?
I have a bash file as following:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
deal_file(){
printf $1

so the for loop spilt the file names if containing spaces, how can I fix the bug?
What is the application you are used to work with (if any) to deal with requirements management?
Anyone but doors or osrmt?
It's starting to feel like Ubuntu 9.10 users have been left out in the cold, or at least forced to fend for themselves. I'm referring to the publicly-known vulnerabilities present in Firefox 3.5.9 (the version currently in use by Ubuntu 9.10). Ubuntu 10.04 (which uses Firefox 3.6.x instead of 3.5.x) users received their package updates June 29th, yet Ubuntu 9.10 seems to have been placed on the back burner. So basically, my questions are: Does anyone know what's going on? What's taking so long? Has security support for Firefox been terminated for Ubuntu 9.10?
PS: I can sort of understand how Ubuntu isn't able to provide Firefox patches for Ubuntu 9.04, as it uses Firefox 3.0.x (which isn't supported upstream anymore) and the distro release is so close to EOL. But, surely Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't need to be treated the same way, given that the 3.5.x branch it uses is still supported upstream and the distro release won't reach EOL until Q2 2011.

I also have a sda that is starting to show signs of possibly failing soon when I run smartctl -H. What I want to do is mirror my existing sda with pmagic and upgrade to 11.3. How much trouble will I have going the upgrade route over doing a clean install and trying to import all my Thunderbird/firefox etc data to it with 11.3 and KDE 4.X?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a VPS with SUSE 11 64-bit installed on it.This as it turns out is 11.1.On looking at the repository it has none listed, so getting updates is kinda hard. I added the 11.1 repository, or what I thought was it, but it tells me it can't update as it needs an x64 installation.I've tried changing the repositories to 11.2, but get the same message, that it needs an x64 installation.I'm aware it's best to upgrade with a fresh install off DVD, but this is something I can't do with a VPS.
1) Is it possible to upgrade to 11.2 or 11.3 from 11.1 .. I know it's not overly advised, but is there a way to do it?
2) What's the actual requirements for these or what repositories should I be pointing to? Because, I'm already on 64-bit, so I don't get why they wouldn't work.
3) Is there any issues with staying on 11.1? And if I do, then what repositories should I be using?
I have been using OpenSuse 10.3 for years. Now decided to upgrade to 11.3 (current latest). My current box connected and configured with so many peripherals and software:
1) DLink wireless router,
2) HP Printer (networked),
3) Cannon scanner through USB,
4) Zoiper VOIP telephony application,
5) etc. etc.
my question is whether it is recommended to upgrade straightforward from 10.3 to 11.3 ? Is there any known issues that I might be encountered after upgrade installation (e.g. loosing any previous data, configuration etc.).
With upgrade from 10.2 to 11.3. I burned the iso and chose upgrade option (because when I installed last time it didn't set up the boot management properly to boot into winxp, so I eventually had to reinstall windows).
Upgrade seemed to work ok, but when it first booted it couldn't load the filesystems properly. I mostly fixed this by editing fstab. Now it boots fully into runlevel 5 and congratualtes me, but I'm left at the command line with no GUI (i use Gnome).
I'm currently running opensuse 11.3 with Gnome and I downloaded the 11.4 iso yesterday and was considering doing an over-the-top upgrade. But I've been browsing through the forums and it looks like a lot of people have been having issues with 11.4.
So what is the general consensus on 11.4 so far? Is it recommended to stay with 11.3? If I do try to upgrade, what types of "gotcha's" am I likely to experience.
And since 11.4 comes with LibraOffice but 11.3 has OpenOffice, will it automatically remove the old and install the new or should I manuualy uninstall OO first?

Also happens with Gimp (when it does run it's plug-ins). Parts of Gimp started by `gimp q.jpg&' freeze and cannot continue unless "killall -CONT" or made foreground. Is it a bug? How to reliably start things in a background?
I have a strange problem regarding the connection to a LAN. I have a asus eeepc 1000H with Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 (dual boot with WinXp). I've discovered two days ago that one of the pins from the ethernet port is pushed inside. This led to the fact that my netbook is not capable to deal with some UTP cables in the sense that it won't connect at the network through this cables. These cables work perfectly for any other computer. This is true for XP - for Ubuntu I found that it is not possible at all to connect through any cable at a LAN. There is an exception to that - my internet connection at home is done through PPPOE and I am able to access the internet through Ubuntu and WinXp.
Asus Romania won't honor the warranty (in their opinion I abused the product and it is my fault - fair enough - it is my fault since I am the single owner of the product - and I am connecting it in various locations to various ethernet cables) and in order to fix it they told me they will need to change the entire motherboard - which I guess it will cost me a price close to the price of the netbook itself - and I don't want to pay that much just for a pushed inside pin. (I wrote these to avoid questions regarding the warranty).I can live with the fact that some of the ethernet/UTP cables won't work with my netbook - but I can't live with the fact that the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to the internet through the ethernet port in any other locations besides my home. I require help in order to establish if there is something wrong with the Ubuntu ethernet settings or the Ubuntu OS is not capable to connect to internet through the faulty ethernet port (WinXp can).
I have 2 machines running 11.1, but using 2 diff KDE repo sets . . .
On the first, I am using /KDE:/43:/openSUSE_11.1 as listed under the KDE 4.3.x section of the KDE repo's page. The installed KDE version is 4.3.3-3 but yesterday this repo was updated to 4.3.4-1. The corresponding repo for 11.2 now also has 4.3.4-1.
On the second, I am using /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.1. Installed is 4.3.3-128, the most current. This is the same version as in the corresponding 11.2 repo.
IIRC (and I very well may not) for those of us who wanted to go to 4.2 (and later, 4.3) it was first advised to use the /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory set, but later it was advised to switch to the /KDE:/43:/ set.
In any event, since 4.3.3 is officially released by KDE and considered stable while 4.3.4 is not, it would appear the upgrade path should use /KDE:/KDE4:/Factory/11.2 (which is counter-intuitive to me, given the "factory" nomenclature; on the other hand, the "43:" section is not accurately described, so perhaps that's the problem).
ok after pouring over the internet for the last three days i give up and im asking for help i just did a live upgrade on my suse box taking it from 11.1 to 11.2 and fallowed all the steps in the doc it all went fine except after it was finished i can no longer access the internet
