View 1 Repliesdebian unstable system i have a problem with thinkfinger. By default i should only swipe my finger and i don`t have to press enter after that. The problem is that now i have to press enter. For example in GDM if i enter my username i should swipe my finger and it should let me log in. Now after i swipe my finger nothing happenes unless i press enter.The problem may be related to the update of xorg. i upgraded from f13 to f14 using preupgrade.
now, as the title suggests, the two finger tap acts as a right click, and the three button tab acts as a middle click. and also the tap to click seems disabled by default.
after reading this page, [URL], i created a 50-synaptics.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and put this inside.

This is my first attempt with Yum and Fedora for that matter. I need to load a print driver and network driver for an MX860 printer. I downloaded the drivers and they are in the download folder. When I try to install I get what is below. How do I resolve? Do I need to identify where the driver is? If so, how?

I would like to know whether an updated print driver has successfully replaced a previously installed driver.
I have a late model Lexmark Prestige Pro805 printer. Lexmark supplies a Linux driver which you download. No drivers appear on the Ubuntu Add Printer list. The Lexmark download also installs utilities, etc. Some stuff appears installed in synaptic. I don't know if uninstalling these only uninstalls the applications and not the actual driver. For some reason, I have had issues recently with this printer malfunctioning frequently with my Linux machines over wifi. They have pushed new firmware down to the printer, and this may be a cause. There is also newer Linux print drivers which I installed, but I do not have a clue as to whether the new drivers are actually in use. On a windows machine I would have uninstalled the printer prior to re-installation. Clueless how to accomplish the same on Ubuntu.
How do I make sure the newest drivers are in use?
I read that synaptic touchpads should support multitouch and as I have one of those I tried to enable it. However I wasn't successful.
After some digging in config files (I had to enable SHMConfig) I ended up with KDE configuration tool which is really cool but all multitouch options are there disabled. And also there is an information which says that only one finger is detected by this touchpad.
Is something wrong or my touchpad just doesn't support multitouch? I got this laptop 1.5 years ago so it's not very old.

when I start up ubuntu (10.10) and reach the desktop, the screen is messed up. The center of the screen becomes blurry, and it looks like what is normally the right part of the screen is duplicated in the middle of the screen (with what should be the middle of the screen disappearing).
I think its an ATI video card, and I tried to install different driver from Softwarecenter but no succes.I know the screen is working, because when I boot forinstance, the Ibm logo is showed nicely across the screen. So its not a hardware issue. Another thing, I got puppy linux to work correctly after having the same grapphic issues on that OS when I first installed it. But some how I managed to get the right drivers. But as I like ubuntu more, I would appriciate your help with figuring this out
ps. when I try to setup screen resolution in System>Settings>"resolution", Ubuntu says "unknown display" (marked with red color).
I have a lexmark x2690 there is a deb package on lexmarks sight for my printer but being new to linux i am unsure how to manually install the driver I have read through a lot of documentation on installing packages but nothing has worked any help would be appreciated the driver i need to install is not listed under lexmark when you go to printer setup. I also have a Canon LBP2900 printer which is compatible with Linux, and I can use it with the proprietary driver if connected directly to my computer. As the NAS doesn't have this proprietary driver, it doesn't detect the printer as such when plugged in. How can I install this driver on the NAS?

My problem is that the plasmoid-network manager shows that I am connected to my wireless network (with SSID "Fatty"), but I can't get onto the web. I recently switched my openSUSE 11.1 install from KDE 3 to KDE 4.4 via the one-click-install from [URL]... I was trying to add a German keyboard layout to the default US layout. But as soon as I enable keyboard layouts (via Configure Desktop-> Language & Regional -> Keyboard Layout -> Enable keyboard layouts), the default layout gets messed up (arrow, pos1, end keys etc. no longer work). I'm running openSUSE 11.1 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Several keyboard layouts worked fine with KDE 3. Could it be that some KDE 3 settings are interfering with the KDE 4 settings?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy ThinkPad X32 doesn't shut off the backlight when I suspend it. It also doesn't resume properly. Shutdown works normally. I'm using OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome. Had the same issue with an install of Linux Mint Debian Edition (201101). It is a well-known Debian issue that has evidently trickled down through Ubuntu to Mint. It also exists in Fedora. In search of a distro that would handle suspend/resume without problems, I first tried Scientific Linux. Suspend/resume worked flawlessly, but I was not happy with the package manager in SL, which leaves it to the user to resolve dependency issues that are automatically handled by Synaptic in Mint/Ubuntu/Debian and by the Package Manager in OpenSuse.
OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome had the same problem - the backlight remained on upon suspend, and resume didn't work at all. I solved this issue by making a simple change in a start-up file in OpenSuse. I'm hoping the solution will work in Mint as well, as it is my favorite distro which I have used for three years. The solution:
1. With OpenSuse: open a terminal and type gnomesu gedit /etc/grub/menu.lst. When prompted, type your root password and click OK.
2. Gedit opens with the menu.lst file displayed. Down the page a bit, you'll see several sections that begin with "###Don't change this comment"
3. The first section gives details for the default boot operating system. Somewhere in this long spec, you'll find "vga=0x314" or vga=(something different for your system).
4. Just before or after this part, type "nomodeset" separated from the vga spec by a space.
5. Save the file and reboot. In OpenSuse, suspend/resume now works normally.
someone could let future readers know where the menu.lst file is located under Linux Mint. In the past, I've found it frustrating to try to edit the menu spec with Mint 10 versions, which use Grub2.
Just installed 11.3 on an aging IBM Thinkpad X40. But the network (and xdm) does not work. I saw in the logs the cryptic message nl80211 driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands. This machine worked on 10.3, so this is a confusion. What should I try next?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is completely baffling me..I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X301, which has been running OpenSUSE 11.1 for a while, with vanilla kernels from kernel.org, built and installed in the standard (i.e. not SUSE) way.
A week ago, I dupped to 11.2, and also installed kernel 2.6.38.4 . This was compiled with the gcc-4.3 available under 11.2. Everything worked fine (after the necessary messing around to get X working again).
This weekend, I dupped to 11.4 (via 11.3, of course). After more messing around to get X working again, things were working ok - using the same 2.6.38.4 kernel I'd built under 11.2. I then re-built the kernel. It appears to compile and install ok, and I haven't changed the configuration or the grub configuration. However, it doesn't load. Normally, I just get a blank screen after grub starts it loading. If I boot in basic VGA mode 0, then I get a few lines of messages before it hangs - it hangs complaining about APIC not connected to io bios, and if I boot noapic, it gets a few lines further before hanging after some message I don't know about (allocating 4 HET). I don't suppose that's relevant, anyway.
I've tried three different gcc versions, and two different linux versions (2.31 as well), and the same thing happens. This sounds like something going badly wrong with ld or as or something - but I don't see how anything could have happened that wouldn't have been noticed by thousands of others.

The problem is if I restart my computer, two finger scrolling doesn't work anymore and I have to go through the process again to get it working. Does anybody have some insight on this problem?
I've freshly installed Lucid on Acer Aspire One 250. I had 9.10 before and two-finger scrolling was working with modification on the 11-x11synaptic.fdi file.
However, now with 10.04, the option in mouse properties is grey ed out... Any way to re-enable it?
can i change the behavior of my touchpad so that when i tap it with two fingers it emulates a middle mouse button click (mouse 3). Right now when I tap two fingers it emulates a right-click.

I love that I didn't need any extra drivers to get two finger scrolling working with ubuntu 11.04 on my 3rd gen mac air, and am super impressed with all the out of the box drivers for my mac; but I'm wondering if there's a way to invert the two finger scrolling directions. There must be... It's probably technically involved and will necessitate modify x11 files or something, but I think there must be a way.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThere is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.

I'm finding it really annoying having to right click by holding two fingers on the touchpad and then clicking. Usually when I set my two fingers down when I'm on the target, it scrolls the screen a bit and I end up having to scroll back to the target. This annoyance is really not going away.Does anyone know of another alternative for right-clicking besides using two fingers on the touchpad? I'd really like to set the "fn" key to do it (as I don't use it for anything anymore) - is this possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedNo wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.
