Slackware :: Dual Booting Slack64 With Slack13 On Seperate Disks With LILO?
Feb 27, 2010I am installing slackware 13 on a machine that already has slackware 64- current. I'm doing this to try LFS which needs a 32 bit host (I know about CFLS, but I'm trying to keep it simple). My current installation is on sda with / being on sda1. My new 32 bit installation is on sdb with / being on sdb2.
I didn't install LILO as I figured it would be easy enough to just edit the current lilo.conf and run lilo after rebooting from the installation and then rebooting again into the new 32 bit install. What keeps happening is that the system boots seemingly fine, but after some wierdness I realized that it is booting a kernel from the 64 bit install on sda1. I'm assuming this is a simple screw up in my lilo.conf but I'm not sure exactly how to fix it.

Feb 25, 2010I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?
I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);

Ubuntu Installation :: Which Disks Can Be Main Boot Disks
Mar 31, 2010I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot.The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?
OpenSUSE :: (not) Automounting Disks?
Jan 20, 2011I'm running opensuse 11.2 with gnome. When I plug in a USB disk. It automatically mounts those partitions that it recognizes. I'd rather it didn't. It creates icons on the desktop although I've managed to stop it opening a file manager window for each partition.But how do I stop the mounting altogether? I've looked in the menus, yast, gnome control centre and sysconfig editor but haven't found anything. And google hasn't given me any clues.

Sep 13, 2011I am planning in near future(about a month or two) to build a new computer. There be a least two phisical disks - one for OS an another for data or backup. One disk to be a small(60-80 GB) SSD, another to be a HDD of 1 TB or bigger.
I have a few questions:
Is Linux(openSUSE in my case) work with SSD? It is possible to install Linux on two disks - in my case /swap, /boot and /root partition to be on SSD and /home partition on larger HDD?
OpenSUSE Multimedia :: K3B Won't Burn Disks
Jul 18, 2010I installed K3B 2 today on opensuse 11.2, hoping that something may have been done to make it burn disks, I've had these problems since opensuse 11.0.
When I try to burn a cdrw disk it usually fails with the error that the cd drive doesn't like the disk, if I try and expensive disk I sometimes get the same error, but if it does burn successfully and I put the disk back in the drive all I've got is a blank disk which won't take a 2nd burn.
I've tried DVDRWs and as soon as I click burn K3B decides the blank disk needs formatting and this then fails and keeps failing nomatter what I do. If I choose the ignore option for the speed when formatting it seems to format the disk then it takes between 1 & 3 attempts to burn the dissk.

Oct 1, 2010i was writing a .img file to my usb stick with ImageWriter, but it didn't seem to do anything so i clicked the close gtk button and pulled the stick out of my pc. now my pc gives my an when i try to open the stick. is there any way to fix this. Feb 23, 2010I'm having a problem with my usb disks, on opensuse 11.2. USB disks only mount the first time after booting.
The scenario is, I boot, then I plug a usb disk. It mounts properly and I can use it. After I unmount it and unplug the disk, I try to plug it in and it doesn't mount. And none of my other usb disks will mount as well.
The only workaround is to reboot.
I checked /var/log/messages, and the disk is being detected, it's just not being mounted.

What I do: Partitioning -> Expert. sda1 type RAID do not format / mount, sda2 /(root) type RAID do not format / mount, sda3 /home type RAID do not format/mount. Clone disk to sdb. Raid -> add md126p1 type swap mount to swap, add->md126p2 type etx4 mount to /(root), md126p3 type ext4 mount to /home. Bootloader: GRUB, boot from MBR enabled, boot from / disabled. After installation the system does not boot and grub reports error that the specified filesystem can not be found.

- After a hardrive crash which took out my opensuse 11.2, I installed three new harddrives instead of the old ones. I have installed xp. To see of I could triple boot, i thereafter put in linux mint. I did not like that and installed opensuse 11.3 - to ensure it would place itself on the two second harddrives (formatted in ntfs and with some data on) i before installation took those cables off.. And now alas.. there are no mount points.
So I tried yast, and found the partitioner, chose edit tried to put mount points .. however.. nothing seemed to have happened...

Mar 5, 2011I have an ASUS A8N-SLI board with an nForce4 raid 1 setup hosting a Windows 7 array over two 500GB disks. I have a third SATA drive with opensuse 11.3 installed and working perfectly. By changing the boot order in the BIOS, I can alternate which system boots at startup. What I want to do is set up a dual boot configuration... I don't care how, but I want a screen that asks me which OS to use, preferably defaulting to Windows so my wife can stil check her email without calling me at work.
I thought the easiest setup would be to set the LINUX drive as the primary device and then add then chainload the Windows disks, and set them first in the boot queue. That way, without any intervention, the system would pause for 8 seconds and see if I wanted to boot LINUX, then boot Windows if I didn't do anything.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to add Windows to the GRUB menu and recognize it. All of the documentation I can find seems to assume that your Windows and LINUX partitions are on the same disk, which mine are not.
OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Anymore From Any Of Hard Disks
Jul 18, 2011i have got a very strange boot problem. But first: I have openSUSE 11.4 with kde installed. I have the amd64 dual core cpu and 2 hard disks. I was able to boot from both of those disks (on the second disk I have openSUSE 11.2 in case something goes wrong with the first disk). Then I decided to install openSUSE 11.4 from DVD to a usb key (just like I would to a hard disk). I succeeded. I did not involve any partition of the hard disks in this install. But now I can not boot anymore from any of my both hard disks although bios finds them it did before. After bios I get the following message: Loading stage 1.5 error 21.
Error 21 means: Selected disk does not exist. This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full file name refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by the BIOS in the system But I am still able to boot from usb key. I have even modified the menu.lst from the usb key to boot openSUSE 11.4 from the first hard disk. This works fine. I have also tried to install grub again on my first hard disk with grub.install.unsupported and with yast2. But installation stops with an error message like "hard disk not found by bios".

When I reproduce a video from one of my USB disk, after a while it stops waiting for the disk, then go on. This behavior is not related with the program used to reproduce (Kaffeine, Mplayer, VLC) and is present in both my USB disks, one with ext3 fs and the other with ntfs fs.

Sep 17, 2010I have a Dell Studio XPS running openSUSE 11.2 with dual mirrored disks (using Dell's SATA controller). Does anyone know how I can set up automatic monitoring of the disks so that I will be informed if either fail? I think smartd might be what I need here. Is that correct? I added:

smartd is running, but how do I know that it will report what I need? I also have a client with a Dell PowderEdge SC440 with SAS 5/iR also running openSUSE 11.2. They also require automatic monitoring. There doesn't seem to be a SAS directive for smartd. I notice that the newer release says it does support SAS disk. I upgraded to 5.39. On restart (with DEVICESCAN as the directive) I get the following in /var/log/messages for my SAS RAID disk.

OpenSUSE Install :: Dolphin Doesn't See And Hard Disks Other Than The Root Hdd
Jan 31, 2011I have a brand new install of 11.3, with all the updates, on a cleaned system, following some hdd and cable problems.
So far three problems have surfaced:-
1. Dolphin doesn't see and hard disks other than the root hdd.They appear on the left side in the list, but cannot be accessed as suse seems to have chosen not to mount them.I need them because they have my backup data on them.
2. At each bootup, I have manually to reset the required screen resolution. I need to prevent it defaulting to the wrong resolution every time.
3. I cannot now see my Windows workgroup at all. This is in stark contrast to another distro I've tried which found it and set everything up automatically. The workgroup has one WinXP machine on cable via a router, plus one Win7 machine via router and wifi link. I guessit failed to sort out smb.conf or something?

Sep 17, 2010I'm installing 11.3 from USB stick. I went through the partition screen, etc and it did not mention anything about any data or other stuff on the harddisk. but when I got to the "Live Installation Settings" page, it shows the booting sections as:
+ openSUSE 11.3 (default)
+ openSUSE 11.2 - 2.6.31.12-0.2 (/dev/sdb2)
+ Linux Other
+ Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.3
how do I blow those others away? I want them erased aand don't want them in grub or "installed around", rather, I want it "installed over" them. Also, the "Linux Other" is the USB stick. Is it a problem to have that?

Nov 17, 2010Now i see that i can't unmount (Safely remove device) any USB Memory Stick. If i try to unmount it in KDE, i always get error about one or more files are in use.
But if i execute "umount" in terminal, then it unmount without any problem.

Dec 9, 2010i want to install opensuse 11.3 with LXDE on ASUS EEEPC 1201HA.
Therefor i download this: Derivatives - openSUSE and tied to get this on USB-Stick with Unetbootin.
The EEEPC bootet but obviously the image was not able to boot.
Booting the ISO from CDROM from a external drive it works.
Is it not designed to boot from USB?
OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 KDE Freeze On USB Stick?
Jan 31, 2011I have read lots about KDE (4.xx) freeze on OpenSuse 11.3 Live. Well I have experienced it first hand.
My hard disk which had Opensuse 11.3 (reiserfs) crashed. It was a dual boot and a windows upgrade wiped out the partition information. I am still trying to resuce with dd-rescue.
Now in the meanwhile I burnt a opensuse 11.3 Live CD and worked on it for a week. I was bit annoyed that every too often the cd drive spins....so I decided to burn a usb stick. Its a 2 gb USB stick. I followed the instructions to the toto to burn the ISO image. Then my nightmares started
The USB STICK boot was smooth. However when the desktop starts ...the trouble begins. I clicked on firefox...after about 10 seconds I experienced the dreaded freeze first. I had to reboot the system.
Everything was fine till i started Firefox, the system froze. Now reboot -> start -> firefox --> freeze cycle continued. I got fed up.
I then downloaded google-chrome. Installed it (after updating a couple of drivers) . It worked flawless. I loaded it with graphics...still no problem. Then started firefox .. the system froze. I even disabled all KDE windows animation, set only one window pane, still there is a freeze.
I took my USB stick off and rebooted the system though live CD. I started firefox on boot, NO problems. Opened many many tabs. Still no problem.
So there is a SURE problem with USB + Firefox. I SUSPECT IT MORE DUE TO NETWORK ISSUES THAN GUI (DRIVER) ISSUE. If it were to be GUI driver issue firefox should have fozen both with CD and USB.
Mine is pentium duo processor machine with 2gb RAM (DDR2). Intel chipset for video. I checked the MD5 of downloaded ISO its matched the one on the site. So the iso image is flawless.
All the threads in this regard suspect the video drivers, but I ALSO suspect the network. May be there is a wait() state in the network driver that is holding the process for way too long causing the freeze. Somebody needs to check this up.
The freeze is on USB stick boot only and not on CD boot.

Apr 30, 2011I'm currently having troubles upgrading my 11.1 system. My SuSE running 11.3 had crashed, and when I tried to reinstall it I couldn't find the cd. I only have a 11.1 distro cd, in which I had installed. I want to upgrade to 11.2 since that should be the easiest, from then I think i can figure out how to upgrade from 11.4. I currently do not have any cd's or a usb flash drive to mount the iso image onto. I've read through the wiki looking for a solution, but even with updating my repos i still haven't found the answer.
