I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
Why many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.
That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others.What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!
I recently put together a new PC and running Fedora 14 x86 64bit. On my 32bit system I was running Fedora 10, loved it, no issues. Been running Fedora for a while now.
Here's my current specs;

Memory: 7.6 GiB
AMD Athlon II X4 635 Quad Core Processor
I have installed Exaile, RhythmBox and Clementine. All 3 have the same problem. I can play 1 song at a time fine. But once I add more to the queue/playlist, and the next song has to play, the program crashes. Even if I click to manually go to the next song, it crashes. I can play videos fine, Flash, mkv (720/1080), avi, etc. I have no issues with any other programs, no random reboots, lockups, stalls, errors, etc. Everything runs fine execpt media players. Process to produce problem on all 3 of the said media players:
1. Launch program
2. Play 1 song
3. Add more songs to playlist/queue
4. Either wait for program to finish and try to go to next song or skip, program crashes.

I Install Mathematica 4.0 on Ubuntu 10.04 and fedora 13. When i create new notebook file and save it, Mathematica front end automatically disappear. It shows message "Mathematica has received the signal: SIGSEGV and has exited" on terminal. But this not happing on older Linux version such as suse enterprise desktop 10. if i first create aaa.nb file using vi editor i can open it with Mathematica front end and save it. but cannot do "save as option" and also cannot open edit-> preferences menu.

I changed the complier PGI to Intel. But i had some error message p4_error: interrupt SIGSEGV: 11 This error message was occured using intel compiler I don't know what is the ploblem.

I have a strange effect here, where konqueror is started multiple times. It is no problem to start it from the K-Menu. But konqueror seems to be associated with different actions in applications, e.g. many "help" entries; among others e.g. Inkscape: "Hilfe/Inkscape Handbuch" (~ Help/Inkscape handbook") If I'm unfortunate enough to hit such an item, the konqueror items start flooding my task bar, while the mouse cursor - changed to the konqueror icon - is flickering like wild, while konqueror is starting again and again. None of the windows really open and all icons disappear after some time. (due to some resource overflow, but unfortunately I can't find the relevant log entry this time) How can I prevent this ? (Or debug this, if the cause is unclear)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm executing the Wolfenstein Enemy Territory installer, and since finding the first package it missed, I've been stumped.It wants a gtklib-1.2.so, and I've been on the internet looking everywhere I know, I don't like to pester with easily-solvable problems.
I've found a lot about it, however no solutions when '-ubuntu' is added - seems Ubuntu folk apt-get this and that all the time, whereas I can't find what I'm looking for in the Software Manager or Software Search on [URL] I know the missing libraries are a simply case of back-tracking a bit and installing GTK1.x type packages, the thing is I can only find 2 onwards - I have everything in 64 and 32 versions, but just too reecent it seems.
For this case and in future similar cases - where are the old-school versions to be found, and how can they easily be added to SUSE if they come in an .rpm etc? A way of adding a broader selection to the package browser?
I just updated both my KDE 3.5.10 and KDE 4.5 today (OpenSuse 1.11). The problem that I have now is that the Plasma Desktop is loaded automatically after KDE 3.5 has started. So, depending on where I click or what I do, plasma and kdesktop fight for the control of my desktop.
I searched in every corners of my KDE 3.5 --and a bit in KDE 4 since somebody forced kdm4 on me-- but I haven't found who or what starts "plasma-desktop". Definitively not me! I can kill it safely but that's very irritating.
After I login my desktop preferences are not loaded. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have no Pulse Audio libraries anymore...not sure how they got deleted. Sound is working fine though....I wasn't using Pulse to begin with, but don't understand what happened to them....think they got deleted in going to KDE 4.4.1 rel 228 today. Should I have those libraries installed for any reason? If so, what should I install?
PS: If I go to Yast, under multimedia, I know longer see Pulse as an option...only hda_snd_intel or whatever
I'm using opensuse 11.2 GNOME. While going through the Add/Remove Software I found that I've some KDE libraries installed on my system. I don't think that I need them on my system. Will removing them affect my system in any way?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed opensuse 11.4 having come from 11.1 and when I started configuring VNC it appears that tightvnc is installed by default. I enabled remote administration and open firewall ports in YAST and found that the tightvnc viewer connects to my server ok. I do have a couple problems though;1. the password I set up when manually launching vncserver for the first time is not requested.2. When I launch a viewer connection it appears that an existing session is not being connected to since I log in as a user through the typical suse login screen and when I exit the session, all terminals and apps launched during that session are ended. On my 11.1 installation, after exiting a session all work was persistent and not ended.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble installing software from the source files. From what I can gather the problem lies with not having the correct c libraries installed. My understanding is you use the ./configure, make, and make install commands in a terminal to install. And that the configure command checks to see if you have everything to install. this is the output when I try to configure:
