OpenSUSE Install :: Graphics Card Driver / Everything Is Greyed Out (nothing To Be Selected)?

Jun 18, 2009

I recently installed SuSE 11.1 (64 bit) on my system

AMD Phenom II 940 3.0 Ghz;Biostar TA790GX 128M Motherboard with ATI Radeon HD 3300 Graphics card built in;
4 Gb (2*2 sticks) DDR2 800 MHz RAM

The installation went smoothly, But on first restart and login (and subsequent ones too!) I get a light purple screen with a skyblue box at top left corner, with xconsole written on it. when I Left click anywhere on the screen, I get a popdown with a number of options, of which only XTerm (bash shell) and exit (logout) options work. Now I know the HD 3300 graphics card drivers are not built into the SuSE 11.1 distribution, and I have already downloaded them (Linux ones)from ATI website. I login as Superuser, and type init 3 to go to a very basic screen,login as user, change to superuser again and then run the following file i downloaded from ATI:

sh ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run

The result/output at the command prompt:

Created directory fglrx-install.ubanI5
Verifying archive Integrity... All good.
Uncompressing ATI proprietary linux driver-8.602...
.....(lot of dots)...
ati-driver-installer-9-4-x86.x86_64.run: line 295: ./ati-installer.sh: Permission denied Removing temporary directory: fglrx_install.ubanI5

Once again, i tried everything in superuser login.

Also I tried making changes via sax2 command, it doesnt seem to work. A window opens where I see that my graphics card has been detected but thats about it. nothing else in that option, everything is greyed out (nothing to be selected)

Software :: Cron Clock Is An Hour Off To System Time

Mar 31, 2010

I have cron jobs running and the timing is critical, because I'm running Nessus scans on production servers. If I hit them at the wrong time, I'm toast. But when I check the cron log, I see that it is an hour off. Here is the output for the command "clock":
Wed 31 Mar 2010 03:01:26 PM CDT -0.257677 seconds

And this is the tail of the cron log:
Mar 31 16:00:01 nes-001 CROND[8790]: (root) CMD (/Nessus/Targets/NessusScriptDataCenterScan.test)
Mar 31 16:01:02 nes-001 CROND[8822]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
Mar 31 16:01:02 nes-001 run-parts(/etc/cron.hourly)[8822]: starting 0anacron
Mar 31 16:01:02 nes-001 anacron[8832]: Anacron started on 2010-03-31
Mar 31 16:01:02 nes-001 anacron[8832]: Normal exit (0 jobs run)
Mar 31 16:01:02 nes-001 run-parts(/etc/cron.hourly)[8834]: finished 0anacron

Cron thinks it is 4:00 p.m., but it's really 3:00 p.m. How do I tell Cron what time it is? (Stopping and restarting the crond service did not change it.)

Fedora :: No Output From Cron Jobs In /etc/cron.daily

Jan 29, 2011

I have added some executable scripts to /etc/cron.daily but don't get the stdout/stderr output from them as mail (or anywhere else I have found). At least one of them is running (because I can see that it has added a file to the disk).

The peculiar thing is that I do get the output from /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch (part of the logwatch package) as an email each day.

The MAILTO line in /etc/crontab is "MAILTO=root" (unchanged from default). Same for /etc/anacrontab.

I do have an alias at the end of /etc/aliases which redirects root's mail to my own account, but this alias works fine for mail I send manually. (It also appears to work fine for the output from the file /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.)

Ubuntu :: Do Cron Updates Erase Cron Entries

Sep 19, 2010

I put in my cron entries to run my backup script which rsyncs my data to my 2nd drive, however on a hunch I checked my backup drive which mounts automatically via fstab and I realize it had not ran in a while. I checked cron and there were no entries for it. I got to wondering if I should ever be worried about a cron update coming down and over-writing my existing cron file with the backup entries in it to run.

OpenSUSE :: Cron Job 'permission Denied' / Sort It?

Jan 5, 2011

After an upgrade to opensuse 11.3 from 11.2 it turns out that cron uses pam for authentication. Now I have one user 'mythtv' which does not have a login and is not part of the 'users' group. This user is being denied access (permission denied messages in /var/log/messages from crond).

Now, I have been experimenting with the /etc/pam.d/crond config file. I wanted to use the pam_listfile module to grant access to this specific user without authentication. That however didn't work and I have now narrowed down the problem even more.

When I use this for my crond file

Code...

What could be the problem here?

Ubuntu :: Greyed Out Screen Happens Way Too Much / Cause Of This?

Jul 17, 2010

I've searched for this a fair bit but everyone seems to have a different cause.

I constantly get applications greyed out. (I understand this is when ubuntu sees them as 'not responding') It happens to Firefox a lot, but that may just be because I use it alot. It happens to Nautilus a lot too, and sometimes the everything gets grey at once.

Windows, every other OS I've ever had installed (including older Ubuntus) and the 10.04 live-cd all run fine. So I'm under the impression that it's something either that i've installed or that ubuntu did when it installed.

It's done this pretty regularly from day one, so it doesn't seem to be something I've done lol.

What possible causes are there for this? Is there a log or something I can check that may enlighten me?

OpenSUSE :: Cron (Cannot Make / Remove Entry For PAM Session)

Jun 28, 2011

I run a virtual server with a standard minimal openSUSE 11.4 installation (Strato image) and all recent updates installed.
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux servername 2.6.18-028stab089.1 #1 SMP Thu Apr 14 13:46:04 MSD 2011 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

A few days into running the server I found that although /usr/sbin/cron was running it didn't execute the cron scripts. Instead, I find this:

Code:
$ tail -n 3 /var/log/messages
Jun 28 18:00:01 servername /usr/sbin/cron[28590]: pam_warn(crond:session): function=[pam_sm_open_session] service=[crond] terminal=[cron] user=[root] ruser=[<unknown>] rhost=[<unknown>]
Jun 28 18:00:01 servername /usr/sbin/cron[28590]: (root) PAM ERROR (Cannot make/remove an entry for the specified session)
Jun 28 18:00:01 servername /usr/sbin/cron[28590]: (root) FAILED to open PAM security session (Cannot make/remove an entry for the specified session) repeated every 20 minutes.

I have this:
Code:
$ cat /etc/pam.d/crond
# The PAM configuration file for the cron daemon
# No PAM authentication called, auth modules not needed
auth sufficient pam_rootok.so
account sufficient pam_listfile.so item=user sense=allow file=/etc/cron.allow onerr=succeed quiet
auth include common-auth
account include common-account
password include common-password

As per the standard installation and /etc/cron.allow doesn't exist (I tested if it made a difference if it existed with the single line root in it, but there was no effect). I need cron to execute because I want zypper to auto-update my server. On my home openSUSE 11.4 installation the problem doesn't exist. Is it perhaps related to the settings in the yast security center?
