Users will write data on a samba shared folder at any give time. I need to execute a script as soon as some thing is written to that shared folder. What I need to know how to execute a script as soon as something some data is written to that shared folder.

I have written a shell script to compile my application and copy it to the server home directory, inorder to run my application I need to start the server (by running a shell script). But before that I need to stop the the currently running instance of my server. To do that I have to generate a keyboard event (Ctrl+c which I press it manually). I want to automate the entire process by writing a shell script I am able to run the server just by adding ./run.sh in my shell script. But before that to stop my server can I generate a keyboard by using a shell script event(ctrL+C) to stop server.?

I have create a script to start a server(my first question). Now I want it to run on the system boot and start the defined server. What should I do to get this done? My findings tell me put this file in /etc/init.d location and it will execute when the system will boot. But I am not able to understand how the first argument on the startup will be start? Is this predefined somewhere to use start as $1? If I want to have a case startall that will start all the servers in the script, then what are the options I can manage.

I am trying to execute a 4GE file using command something like this "/usr/bin/ksh path of the file with some arguments " ex: /usr/bin/ksh /home/abc.4ge S "./xyz" . I am able to execute the 4GE without this "/usr/bin/ksh" specifying in the command which basically runs in ksh shell itself. But when i try to run it exclusively using the path of the shell it gives me an error something like this "/usr/bin/ksh: /home/abc.4ge: cannot execute". I did check the permissions and all the file has execute permission.

Outside of that, I do have access to chroot and can pretty much do anything on the server. I want to use ImageMagick to create dynamic images based on form data.
I was trying to find a work-around with PHP where I can still use ImageMagick (a shell-based imagining program) by causing SQL to execute a shell script after the form data is saved to a table. Is there anyway it could cause a flag to automatically run a shell script when someone adds a new row to a certain table. It has to be instantaneous, more or less, so that the user isn't sitting there waiting for a minute for cron to catch any changes to the database.

I was looking at my logs and was wondering what the easiest way to go about removing certain things from being logged.
For instance I noticed by default Ubuntu seems to log all network traffic and handshakes with wifi etc and I would like to keep such out of my logs.
I know about syslog and /var/log/* log files but I don't know what kind of events means particular problem.
E.g.
- hardware issues (?)
- security problem (/var/log/security)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just finished upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 and converting from F-spot to Shotwell, including adding a large number of new photographs (>15 k).
On opening Shotwell today I found that all "tags" and "events", including those from the F-stop imported photos, have disappeared!! (strangely the photo ratings are maintained)
No amount of searching was able to relocate them. The modification date on the photo.db in the .shotwell folder is pre-problem, so I am holding out some hope that the relevant data have not been over-written.
I am not familiar with sql so do not know how to check the db (or restore the correct headers or whatever else is needed).
I want to separate the Apache2 Error log to log certain events in a specified file.
For example:
client denied by server configuration > denied.log
Directory index forbidden by Options directive > forbidden.log
I would like it add it to the logs as the events happen, and like the other logging systems, create new files when the current is full. i.e. denied.log.0
There are far too many 'events' in Firestarter's log. I can't find which file contains the log either by searching my file system or the internet.
