This should be simple but I can't seem to find what I am looking for.I want to search a text file for the existence of certain strings and execute a command if they exist, something along the lines of:
if <string> exists
command
or
if <any member of this list exists>
command
I know how to manually search a file with grep, cat, etc., but the "if this exists" part eludes me.

I am trying to determine if I should upgrade PHP's PEAR on my server. I am trying to check the version of PEAR currently installed. I am getting the following error when I use the pear -V command:Warning: realpath(): open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/tmp) is not within the allowed path(s)(/usr/share/pear:/usr/share/php) in System.php on line 459I tried adding /tmp to my php.ini file, but then when I use the pear -V command it doesn't do anything. I do not get any errors or anything.I am also trying to install symfony and have the same situation described above when I use the following command: pear cannel-discover pear.symfony-project.comDoes anyone have any thoughts? If not the solution, does anyone have any suggestions on how to begin troubleshooting this?

I'm trying to execute a C++ program on PowerPC. But I am facing an error saying: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". But a C program gets executed successfully. The programs are cross compiled using PowerPC cross compiler.

I am using RHEL 5 and i have configured a daemon that starts automatically when system boots, i have written its startup script on /etc/rc.d/rc.local file and it executes successfully but the problem is that if that daemon stops running (due to any reason) i have to restart/reboot the whole server so that the daemon runs, i need to know that is there a way that we can just re-executes the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file while the whole sytem remains as it is.

I'm new to Fedora, and haven't used any flavor of Linux in years. I'm attempting to run a few benchmarks that were given to me by my instructor, but every one I try to run gives an error "Cannot execute binary file". For instance,.inp.inThis command gives an error:bash: ./Mcf: cannot execute binary fileIt is not a permission problem, I have confirmed the file has execute permissions (one of the things I still remembered after all these years). I suspect all the benchmarks I have been given were compiled on Ubuntu. Would this be causing the problem? I do not have access to the source code, so I cannot recompile. If that is the problem, is there a way around it that doesn't involve throwing away a weekend and starting fresh on Ubuntu?

I found a Linux .x86 binary file that I've been looking for, but not sure what to do with it. Does this (*.x86) binary file format seem like something that could simply be run by command, or something that would need to be compiled first? There is not much information that I could find regarding the particularly file.

I want a quick and simple way to execute a command whenever a file changes. I want something very simple, something I will leave running on a terminal and close it whenever I'm finished working with that file. Currently, I'm using this: while read; do ./myfile.py ; done And then I need to go to that terminal and press Enter, whenever I save that file on my editor. What I want is something like this: while sleep_until_file_has_changed myfile.py ; do ./myfile.py ; done
Or any other solution as easy as that. BTW: I'm using Vim, and I know I can add an autocommand to run something on BufWrite, but this is not the kind of solution I want now. Update: I want something simple, discardable if possible. What's more, I want something to run in a terminal because I want to see the program output (I want to see error messages).

I have a strange issue on one of my machines. The same thing works fine on all the others. When I execute:
Code:
sudo -u myuser -i ls
I get:
Code:
/bin/ls: /bin/ls: cannot execute binary file
On the other hand if I just run
Code:
sudo -u myuser -i
and then run ls, it executes successfully, but I don't want to stay logged in as myuser I just want to run a single command.

I'm trying to install this app called genBlast. It's a bioinformatics tool that does some cool stuff (I guess the actual use doesn't matter that much). Anyway, it comes as a .tar.gz folder with about a dozen executables in it; no compiling necessary. I extracted it to the desktop so I didn't have to worry about permissions, and then just tried to run it from inside the directory (it's a command line app).
All of the executables work with a ./ except one, and it's the most important one for that matter. When I go to run it, I get the error message Code: bash: ./genblast: cannot execute binary file I've checked permissions with ls -l, run a chmod 'u+x' just to make sure, and everything else I can think of. But it just won't work. Also, I just installed it on another computer and it works fine, so I'm pretty sure it's on my end.

When i use the "sudo firewall-start" command as root, it works perfectly. Im sure there's a simple solution to this problem, but cant seem to find one in the forums.
