Ubuntu Networking :: Create A Samba Share To See It On Windows Computer But Have Had Nothing?
Aug 6, 2010I am trying to create a Samba share on Ubuntu so that I can see it on my Windows computer but have had nothing but trouble. I've tried everything that I could find in Google but the best I can get is that my Ubuntu computer shows up as Unknown device on my Windows computer. Unfortunately, my Windows computer belongs to my company or I would just switch to Ubuntu altogether. I have posted a couple of screenshots of what I see in Windows, my GParted partitions, and the options that I have enabled for the folder I am trying to share. Below are my fstab and my samba files from Ubuntu. I am sure that this is just some rookie mistake as I am new to Ubuntu. It certainly seems that this should be easy, but I just can't get it.

Networking :: Samba PDC - Client Machine Create New Profile When Server Down
Dec 14, 2010I have set samba domain. I am able to add win 7 and xp clients. All r working fine. But I have a doubt. If I shutdown the samba pdc server, I should be able to login the client machine with the same profile (which I had, when the samba pdc server was up). Now , if I shutdown the sambapdc, I am able to login the client machine, but new profile is being created. How to avoid this.
How to say to samba that the client machine should load the same profile which was created when the server was up and running. I do not want the client machines to create new a profile when the server is down bcoz in windows domain, when the windows domain is shutdown, the client machines are able to login with the same profile (the profile which was created when the domain was up). I wish to have same thing in samba pdc also.

Failed to initialise SAM_ACCOUNT for user <username>. Does this user exist in the UNIX password database ?
Failed to modify password entry for user <username>
Unix accounts are created in Corporate Office, which is in US. We had a dedicated link from our office to US office. Now this link has been disconnected & now we have a VPN connection through internet to US Office. there is a firewall on both the sides. While creating samba account i tried to give netstat command & i saw it is trying to make a connection to the Unix Server at US, but the connection is not getting established it is showing SYN_SENT.
The port from the Home directory server trying to connect to the Unix server is connecting using Dynamic port but the Unix server port it is showing as PORTMAP. Network guys are not opening all the ports in the firewall. Kindly let me know the DESTINATION PORT that the home directory server is trying to connect to Unix Server, so that i can ask my network guys to open that perticular port. So that i can create Samba account to the users.

Ubuntu :: Create A Virtual Directory In Apache For One Of Company's Internal Websites?
Feb 22, 2011I have a need to create a virtual directory in Apache for one of my company's internal websites. I have confirmed that I can create an alias for a local directory: Alias /vdir/ "/usr/share/somefolder/"
So I would get to this virtual directory by going to http://server.domain.com/vdir/. But when I attempt to point it to a shared folder on another server:
Alias /vdir/ "//servername/share/"
or
Alias /vdir/ "//servername/share/somefolder/"
Both return the 404 Not Found error, which I would expect if it is not connecting to the share. I've searched but can't seem to find the correct syntax and I know I am missing something basic. I have searched google and these forums but can't seem to locate the exact syntax. Are there other lines in the config file I need? Permissions should be no problem the shared is EVERYONE has access (for now).
General :: Is It Legal To Open A Small Business To Setup (Ubuntu) Desktops / Create Websites
Oct 8, 2009Since Ubuntu and other Linux Distros are free to download and distribute. Would it be illegal for me to have a Small Business of my own that would charge individuals/small-businesses to Install and Setup Linux desktops. I wasn't sure how that GPL license worked. I figured I would be charging individuals for setting up Linux Desktops on their machines or small business/offices and training/teaching them on the various applications they could install on their own.
Also, would it be illegal to create websites using Apache, Tomcat and other Open Source tools and then sell those sites. I figured many people are turned off by learning or installing something other than Windows desktops on their pcs, just because it is different. If this cannot be done under the GPL license, then could someone tell me how I could go about starting my own small business to legally Setup/Install Linux distributions.

Dec 29, 2010I was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. Then I wanted to go to internode.on.net. As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)
ping just drops out. edit: weirdest thing! I just retried and now can not emulate the problem for internode. freebsd still won't show. that is less than five minutes between problems and resolution! Fedora Networking :: Can't Access Some Websites
Aug 4, 2011I just installed Fedora 15 and everything is working ok except i can't connect to some websites such as facebook or hotmail. I tried doing the same on windows and everything is ok there. I've been searching through forum about this problem but nothing seems to help. Has anyone else had this kind of problem and managed to fix it?

Well i went to to download my favorite browser Opera and firefox just times out. I can get to other websites just fine so far. Though it looks like Office Depot won't let me in either. If I boot into Windows I can connect to either site just fine.

Anyhow, ms problem is this. I've installed 11.2 with KDE desktop. Using either Firefox or Konqueror browsers, I am finding it impossible to display any webpages, other than Google. All google websites, such as gmail, calendar and searches work perfectly. Unfortunately, I can't directly enter a url into the address bar nor can I link from a google search.
I've hunted high and low for a solution but have failed to find one.
Fedora Networking :: Can't Access To Some Websites With New Router
Jun 21, 2010recently I have bought a new wireless router and now I have problems connecting to some (secure) websites. I can't login to gmail and facebook while I am still able to connect to these sites using my old router. I have also tryed to connect to these sites using my new router on windows and it worked with no problem.It is really strange for me, although I don't know that much about networking. I am using Fedora 13 and a TP-Link (TD-W8901G) Wireless router and I have these problems using both wired, and wireless connections with this router.

Feb 8, 2010I've been an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and i gotta say, i'm really impressed, especially with the great Karmic! However, ever since my first ubuntu installation, i've had a very awkward problem: My internet does not open any of the following websites:
Rapidshare
Megaupload
Urbandictionary
I don't know if there are other websites I wouldn't be able to access, but those are the main ones i use frequently, now here's what I tried so far (nothing worked):
1- Use a different browser (none of firefox, opera or konqueror worked)
2- Edit the etc/hosts file
3- add a line in the etc/hosts.allow file
It seems so stupid to have to power on a virtual machine to download a rapidshare file!
Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Load Most Of The Websites In GUI (they Get Pinged)
Jun 17, 2010I don't think I changed anything in my system's configuration, but I wasn't able to access most of the websites. Some loaded perfectly, but for a vast majority of them, Firefox (And every other GUI browser - I tested Opera and Chromium) just showed me a never-ending loading screen. At first I thought it was my ISP, but on the same computer when I booted up Windows XP, everything worked fine.
I then booted Ubuntu back and tried pinging the nonaccesible domains - and they all work! Even weirded - for some of the domains the page's title gets loaded, and nothing more - even in something like 30 mins time. For some, I just get "Loading..." message. And some, as said earlier, work just fine. But I can ping all of them. I wanted to ask You about that issue, but ubuntuforums.org didn't even load. I then tried to use CLI browser links and it works just fine for all my sites and here I am, writing this topic from CLI mode in Terminal.

Aug 28, 2010I am in the process of setting up my own Linux gateway/firewall using two nics eth0(external network) and eth1(internal network). The Linux gateway hands out ip addresses using dhcp3-server, and uses iptables to route the traffic correctly. Clients are able to connect and access the internet...everything is working great, HOWEVER I can't access my apache virtual hosts websites from the internal network? They work just fine if i access them from the outside world
I can type ip of the web server, 192.168.0.201 and it shows the first virtual host listed in my /sites-enables/000-default folder. but i can't use any DNS entries. I don't have any internal DNS servers running. This doesn't makes sense, because if i replace the linux firewall/router with my normal linksys wrt54G router it works just fine.
Networking :: Certain Websites No Longer Working Correctly?
Feb 24, 2011Starting today I cannot log into [URL] on Linux. Whenever I try to login, it just takes forever and then either Chrome or Firefox tell me that perhaps the site no longer exists. It works perfectly fine on Windows. Strangely it also does not work on my Roku box and is working sporadically on my PS3. I would think it was my ISP or my router if it wasn't working perfectly fine on Windows.
I AM NOT TRYING TO WATCH NETFLIX ON LINUX. I know that doesn't work. I'm just trying to update my queue. I'm having this problem both on Fedora and Ubuntu (latest stable releases on both). I know it's not just loading from cache on my Windows machine because I'm going to pages that I have never been to and it's working just fine. Now, I have not tried signing out and in because then I'll be up a creak. OK, I installed another browser on my Windows computer and I'm able to sign into Netflix just fine. So it's not a sign-in issue.
WHY DOES THIS WORK ON WINDOWS? It's the same browsers - Chrome and Firefox on Linux and Windows and the same network.
ALSO, flickr is not working correctly - I cannot make any comments in the discussions (but can on photos which is ajax-y).
update: also checked a Linux computer using Linux Mint that hasn't been turned on in 2 months. I know it was able to access Netflix back then. Nothing has been changed - not even updates. It also cannot access Netflix. Either taking forever to load [URL] or when trying to login.
via looking in Konqueror, I saw it's trying to go [URL] and that's what makes it so that I cannot connect to [URL] if it considers me to be signed in. And here's what Konqueror said:

May 9, 2011I'm having a weird problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with.
First some specs:
F13
NetworkManager Applet 0.8.3.998
Driver r8169
Opera 11 and Firefox 3.6.16
Recently my ISP switched to PPPoEand since then my internet connection has been giving me problems. While browsing, some websites load fine, some websites load fine after I refresh once or twice, some load really slowly and the formatting tends to be messed up and some websites won't load at all (they stop at waiting for website...). Ping for all of these sites is however fine. Also uploading and downloading either from sites like rapidshare or using torrents is also fine. The same ISP also provides a second similar connection which is connected through a wireless router (mine is connected directly - no modem or router) to two computers (one via a wired connection and one through wireless) both running Win 7 and everything works fine over there.
Things I've tried. I tried using the router changing it's setting to my connection and connecting through that but the problem remains. After googling I thought it might be an MTU issue so tried this:

Networking :: Slow Initial Connection To Websites ?
Mar 18, 2011My internet connection is pretty fast, but the initial connection to websites take about 4-10 seconds. Sometimes I even get a "connection timed out" error. Once and if the connection is made, the website loads up pretty quickly. I have no problems with internet speed otherwise as I get pretty good speeds for downloads and torrents.
Chrome shows "sending request" and Firefox shows "looking up" during this period of apparent inactivity.
It is not a DNS problem as I have switched DNS from my default to the OpenDNS servers. Besides, everything works fine on Windows with either DNS setup.
I have also tried switching off ipv6 by adding "alias net-pf-10 off" in modprobe.conf. I even switched off ipv6 in Firefox in about:config to no avail.
Oddly, wget seems to work fast and normally. And nslookup returns results almost instantly.
I am on Arch linux with a Broadcom wireless card.

Now when I try to access the share from a winbox it prompts for the passw.This share is likely to access by several winusers and i have no idea about thier workgroup names whatsoever. This is just a simple share im trying to publish just like an annonymous vsftpd account.

when i am using win xp to logon on samba domain the windows XP does not load profiles from samba. I think that the problem is NTUSER.DAT storing in /home/user/profile
The same profile is working using samba 2.2.8 but not working in samba 3.5.3..

Jul 17, 2010I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
Fedora Networking :: Tough Time Accessing Websites With F8
Feb 4, 2009I have dual boot Fedora 8/XP. My net seams to be moody only in my fedora sometimes I have wait as long as 30 sec for the page to load where as in my windows it's fine no such delay. This happens randomly yesterday night I had tough time accessing this forum (in addition to other sites) now it's working fine.

I have also installed vmware workstation 6.5 on the same computer, and successfully installed fedora 12 in vmware, with network is bridged.
I can successfully ping websites at the command line, e.g., ping [url], it did get replies with time and ttl, but i can't open the websites with firefox or conquerer browsers.

This works for various websites whether they load or not. My MTU is set at 1492 but I've tried various lower numbers all the way down to 1300 but no luck. I tried disabling ipv6 in Firefox but no change.
