Networking :: OpenVPN - Different Subnets For Physical And Virtual LANs?

I have set up OpenVPN server using a bridged configuration. My networking "powers" aren't that advanced, so I did this by following the openvpn tutorial for bridged servers. I have tested this with several clients connecting to my server from different locations and it works very nicely (including broadcasts).
My server's LAN IP address is 192.168.2.4, and my LAN's mask is 24. Clients connecting to my server get assigned IP address that also fall within that subnet (i.e., the 192.168.2.x pool contains both physical machines in my home and "virtual" hosts). This is what the OpenVPN walkthrough specifies:

I was wondering if it would be possible for the VPN to fall within a different subnet (such as 10.0.1.x). I would also like to do that without adding another physical NIC to my server, or changing my physical IP address. I would imagine this is possible, since that's how hamachi does it.

For some simulation, I am trying to configure a setup of 3 ubuntu desktops (one of them with multiple network cards) to behave in the following way:
Each one of them should be a separate network not seeing the others (including multicast addresses) They need to have internet access through the machine with multiple network cards. So from the point of view of each machine they define a LAN in which it is the only device and have internet access through the gateway machine.
What do I need to do to configure these machines for the above setup?

This may seem like a silly question but I have many servers and sometimes we forget when we login if it physical or virtual running on a VMware system. This makes a diffrence when I try to get a console access etc. So I wanted to know before if its physical or VM.yes I know i can change motd once i get the info or make a list etc. There are many ways not OS related for me to find this info out. But I was wondering if there was a Linux command that I could use when I ssh to a system to check if its physical or logical?I have inventory information etc and vm vsphere to check but that can be time consuming if I just want to check something quick.
uname -a or something like that that would tell me would be cool. I am thinking there is no command as Linux really does not care if its running Vm or physical.

I am new to Linux kernel/user space programming having been an assembly programmer in my previous life. I am now using 2.6.x kernel on an embedded CPU that has a few dedicated hardware blocks (including more CPU running just C-code, i.e., no operating system). There is a single DRAM connected to this chip with one Linux CPU + multiple h/w blocks. No swapping.Question(s):
1. The Linux CPU needs to talk to hardware blocks that obviously physical DRAM addresses while Linux processes/threads use virtual addresses.
2. How do I translate these addresses back-n-forth? For example, a Linux process may want to allocate memory and then hand it off to a hardware block to write into it. Then after a while the process will read it.
3. Sometimes, the hardware block may write a physical address into the shared memory. The Linux CPU will read the shared memory and then convert the physical address to virtual memory and go read that location.
How does one achieve all of this? If this is being extremely stupid, then please let me know. Hopefully, you can give me some pointers.

I use the command ln -s a lot to create symbolic links. The problem is that I need to run a routine that looks for a specific string in ALL of my websites and I'd do it somehting like this:
Code: cd /home grep -R "function_enhanced_mail_v100.php" * however, it's going to recurse all the "folders" and include symbolic links which I don't wish to do. Is there any way to prevent this?

I've read several write ups on how to convert a physical linux box to a virtual one, but have yet to do it. I've tried a few times just playing around with no success. Generally I use VMware ESX as my host of choice, but am open to citrix's XEN (as citrix presentation server is my day job). I run 3 websites out of the house (on junk left over desktop.. can't believe I've had such good (lucky) uptime). One of the sites was particularly difficult to set up, so I'd rather not ahve to do it over again. It's built on OScommerce (LAMP).. so it's a database server as well come to think of it. So.. what have you tried to convert with/to?

Have you ever created a VPN connection between two LANs which are geographically far away? For example LAN1 is 192.168.1.0 and LAN2 is 10.0.0.0. If I am in LAN1 I would like to be able to ping 10.0.0.1 and get packets back.
I am trying to do it with OpenVPN. I can connect two computers from both LANs using their virtual IP but I can't do that with their private IP. I think the solution must be in creating a bridge or using the "push" command of OpenVPN, unfortunately I haven't found clear information within the internet.

So I have 3 home routers, 1 belkin and 2 netgear. I have my ISP internet connection coming into my belkin, which I then have the 2 netgear routers (from their WAN) plugged into Belkins LAN ports. Now the Ubuntu computers I have on Netgear LAN 1 and Netgear LAN2 can get to Belkin just fine (at 192.168.1.1), but I am unable to access a computer on LAN1 from a computer on LAN2 and vice-versa. My Belkin is 192.168.1.1, my Netgear1 WAN is 192.168.1.100 and Netgear2 WAN is 192.168.1.200. I have the netgears both assigning DHCP IP's from range of 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.150 on their LAN ports.
Now, I have set Netgear LAN1 port 80 NAT'd to go to one of my computers on it. I try to access 192.168.1.100:80 from a computer on Netgear LAN2 network and it say host unreachable.What am I doing wrong?

A process is trying one access to memory, for example through an array (ex.: vect[0]=123. What happens?
Here below what I guess but I'm not sure and accept any comment (please, distinguish between "the system" and "the CPU" in case).
Let's suppose swapping to disk disbled.
We have two scenarios: without and with cache.
If no cache is present in the system:
1. The CPU must discover the phys addr of vect[0] virtual addr. To do that, has to read from 3 (or 2 depending on the system?) pages tables, stored in memory as well.
2. The CPU writes to the final address.
These mean 4 memory accesses.
If cache is present:
1. Like above but, if the pages tables are in cache, we have 3 accesses to that.
2. If the req. page is not in cache, it's reads from ram and transferred to it. Afterwards, cache is written.
In the best case we have 4 cache accesses.

I have a 32 bit Ubuntu installed and my Laptop has 4GB RAM, but only 3GB is considered by Linux. My question is: what is the reason for the upper limit on physical memory ?

dmesg | grep Memory [0.000000] Memory: 3052428k/3112960k available (4673k kernel code, 56364k reserved, 2121k data, 656k init, 2200904k highmem) I am familiar with the virtual memory concept where linux splits upper 1GB for kernel and lower 3GB for user processes. In total, linux 32bit can address 4GB virtual addresses. Does this meant that 1GB of physical memory is already mapped to 1GB of kernel space and Linux only shows the remaining 3GB physical memory left for the user in the above command.
I did some searching on the internet and found some articles related to this, but it only confused me further since some articles suggest 4GB is the upper limit with mentioning whether it's virtual or physical memory, some bring in the concept of PAE, etc. I'm relative new to Linux's memory management, so it'd be really helpful if someone could answer this.

I am encountering some problems regarding CentOS 5 and I am going to kindly ask your help in debugging further what is happening. I will give as much information as possible about the setup. Here we go. We use on one server of our servers, GOautodial, an inbound/outbound call center application, that it's installed on a CentOS 5.5 (Final).

I am currently using windows xp, but I have acquired another hard drive and wish to install ubuntu to it, unfortunately i do not have a working cd drive. I have loaded the newest iso in daemon tools and it asks me if i want to install it in windows, or restart my computer to do a full install. i wish to do neither. i want to install a full copy to my other drive with the virtual cd drive. I have found alot of help dealing with installing it on the same drive as windows or something that would require a floppy drive. this task seems like it would be alot simpler than installing on the same drive, buy maybe not. Did i miss a tutorial somewhere?

I'm trying to establish a connection between two seperate ADSL LANs (coming into the house, but from separate ISPs) to a situation where all hosts on either LAN will be able to reach any host on eiher LAN WITHOUT having to use an excess of plastic routers around the house, and please no Wireless bridges. WiFi will only be available as Access Points.
I've heard that Debian does this kind of static routintg / RIP stuff quite well. And I just happen to have one lined up in the right place, that haven't got at snowballs chance in hell of running WINXP or above. But it kills at textbased datamanipulation/forwarding/rerouting/dropping/scanning ... so I'vew made up my mind. That is what I want to do... Now how do io get around doing stuff like that.
The Debian box is connected to both networks: Hostname: AsusAnd
(192.168.1.0/24 - TDC network)
and to
(192.168.15.0/24 - Profiber network)
Needless to say, but both netmasks are 255.25.255.0 hence the /24 The respective router's LAN addresses are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.15.1 My Debian are locked to the following IP's (reserved DHCP):
eth0:192.158.1.56 via DHCP from 192.168.1.1
eth1:192.168.15.177 via DHCP from 192.168.15.1
So far so good - Now here we go ! This is not a scenario where i'd like to always want all network-packages to travel the shortest path, nor NESSESARILY use the other ISPs gateway if the first is down or slow, although that'll be super nice.
I suspect that'll involve router-protocols like RIP. I'll be super pleased to get some guidelines there as well, as i suspect it'll be quite easy to implement once everything else is in place. Although RIP isn't our main goal, it probably comes as a close second. I think we all would like as stable and fast a connection as possible.
I was actually so naive that i thought if i added two static routes to the two routers x.x.1.1 and x.x.15.1, that my problems would automatically be solved by my Debian box, and that it would automatically act as a gateway when the routers send their packages for the other net. As long as i was connected to both LANs at the same time.
Note: I haven't changed or tweaked the Debian kernel to do routing. this is a simple stable install from the net-inst.iso of Debian 5. I'd like to keep it that way unless there's no way around it.
my routers have static routes to each other (WITH PROPER CABLING), configured as follows:
(On router with LAN 192.168.1.1)
[static route] to 192.168.15.0 with nmask 255.255.255.0 going throuhg gateway 192.158.1.56 ( Taken from above info ) - metric around 2

The goal is to make connection calls (ssh, ping, ...) possible from one LAN (LAN-1) to a number of (at the moment two) separate smaller LANs.These smaller LANs (LAN-2a, LAN-2b, ...) have exact same specifications (same IP range, same number of nodes, ...)!The idea is to use a Fedora box (release 14 with 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686) and implement an appropriate iptables routing/forwarding.The Fedora box has three network interfaces:

I have 2 routers, each are assigning IP with DHCP on. One router is plugged into cable modem second router is downstairs plugged into first router. Wire runs in WAN of second router. Each router has its own IP subset. First router assigns IP's to 192.168.1.xxx second router IP's to 10.0.0.xxx
I know I can use the second router as an AP with DHCP OFF. BIG BUT though is my wifi verizon phone got no IP assigned when running like that and wirelessly connecting to the second router. Laptops were just fine. SO, I reconfigured second router with its own subset IP being handed out. Now verizon phone is perfect.
How can I share files between connected PC's using it this way?

As i undertsand - out of 1GB of the virtual Address space for Kernel from 3GB to 4GB of the process address space, Kernel image (code, data, bss, stack, heap) resides staring @0x0 address. Vmalloc area starts either at the end of Physical ram size or at 896M. This 896M cap is mandated to ensure that minimum of 128MB is reserved as vmalloc_reserve for vmalloc,kmap etc.
Is the understanding correct? Now trying to map Physical Zones into this 1GB address space
Initial 16MB is mapped to ZONE_DMA
16MB - 896MB is mapped to ZONE_NORMAL
896MB - 1024MB is mapped to ZONE_HIGHMEM
Does this mean that Kernel image is residing in ZONE_DMA area? Any call to vmalloc() in kernel code will return address beyond 896M? insmod of any LKM will internally invoke vmalloc() to obtain contiguous area - where will this code physically located along with rest of kernel code in ZONE_DMA or in ZONE_HIGHMEM?

I have a firewall between two different subnets. The reason for the second subnet within the internal network is because I have a mail server that I want to protect. However, we need to make sure that the mail server can communicate with the internal network as well.
Mail server is 192.168.100.100
Firewall is 192.168.100.1 and 10.110.101.5 (and its gateway is 10.110.101.1 to the router)
I go to another workstation and ping the mail server. I can't. It times out. I do the same from the mail server. It times out as well.

I have a 2-floor house, with a single ethernet cable from the ground floor to the 1st. Downstair there is my ADSL modem, which is connected to the router upstair through this one cable. Now, I would like to have some more ethernet ports on the ground floor, but there's no room left to run another cable between the floors, so here's the big question: can I run both the modem-router connection and my regular LAN (which are on different subnets) through that one cable, with a switch at both ends?
To make it a little more clear, here is my present configuration

Ok the question. WHAT do I type? (Explicitly!) And WHERE do I type it? In order to reach ubuntu-01.tec.lan, or ubuntu-02.tec.lan from perpetrator.tec.lan or rapine.tec.lan?
I'm interested in using actuall ROUTES. I can already achieve results similair to this with either a NAT firewall, or with VPN.. but that's not what I am interested in.

I have a network routing problem that I need to fix using a PC with ubuntu installed.
Here are the details of my problem:
- I have two networks.
- The first network is an ADSL router with subnet 192.168.1.x. I do not have access to the router nor change any of its configuration.
- The second network has a subnet 172.26.x.x and connect via a wireless access point. Some of the devices connected to the network require to have static IPs.
- I have a PC with ubuntu installed and two ethernet cards: one connected to the first network and the other connected to the access point.
- I need to share the internet connection between the two networks using ubuntu. I already tried before on windows and the sharing worked when both networks were configured to use the same subnet. Once I changed the subnet of the second network, internet sharing stopped working.

Im having a issue with routing internet traffic from my router two different subnets (vlans).
Theres my setup:-

Both eth0,1 are running dhcp (two scoopes) that works fine!

I have ip_forwarding on aswell, but i can ping the ip on the server running that dhcp scoope ie ping 192.168.4.1 works great but i just cant get the internet on the clients.

Bear with me cos i'm just learning this stuff.
I've set up a couple of virtual networks with vmware workstation and experienced the same problem each time. I'll explain the one i'm working on now.
Machines -
Host - Slackware 13.1, VMware workstation 7.x.
VM1 - Vyatta (router).
VM2 - WinXP (client).

BUT I can't ping the XP client from the virtual router, and from the host I can't ping the virtual router.
Why is this?? I assume i've done something wrong but I don't know what.

I'm trying to build a linux(fedora 12) dhcpd server(and gateway), that have 3 network cards(eth0 have with public ip, eth1 192.168.2.1 class and eth3 with 192.168.3.1 class).
Because I have just a switch, I want to put both cables(from eth1, eth2) in the switch. Every client has 2 network card(eth0, eth1). My question is, is there any way to conf eth0 to take from server ip from 192.168.2.1 class, and eth1 from 192.168.3.1? The internet will work only on eth0.
my dhcpd.conf for now looks like this:
subnet 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
