Networking :: Net Command Gone / Get That Back?
Dec 27, 2010
I have been using the net command for a while now to remotely shutdown my windows machine, I believe that it comes with the samba package.
"net rpc shutdown -f -I IP_ADDRESS -U USERNAME%PASSWORD"
I run a Ubuntu 10.10 x86 Netbook edition computer, and have recently updated my software because my computer asked me to and the net command recently stopped working so I assume this is the cause.
It was simply saying that the net command did not exist, but after playing around installing packages I installed samba4 and got it recognizing the command net. But it no longer works the same and does not support "rpc shutdown" nor does it appear to have any replacement for it.
Was the command simply depreciated? if so how can I stop this from happening again, I use net all the time and am not happy that it would disappear without warning.
Can I get the command back somehow, or do any of your have a replacement?

Is it possible to use cd command to navigate back and forward (like browser)?. Something similar to cd - but it only swaps current and last location. I know I can push dir on stack, it would be great to use cd -> and cd <-, though.

I tried a program called BarPanel, which replaces the Gnome Panels. The installation instructions told me to download the program installer (the program installs automatically for Debian/Ubuntu users). Then I had to go to System > Preferences > Sessions to remove the gnome-panel entry and add the BarPanel one. So far so good. On re-starting, the new panels were installed to my desk top in bright green! The problem was that a lot of the icons don't work. The action menu does nothing and there is no entry for Sessions in the System menu, so I can't go back and undo. I have re-installed gnome-panel under Synaptic, without any success. I un-installed BarPanel, so I now don't have any panels at all now! One good thing is that I have Cairo-dock on my desktop, so I have access to several programs, including the terminal.
Can someone out there give me the command line instructions to get the gnome panels back.

I'm have much computer experience but am new to Ubuntu. I typed in sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and it tells me it's already installed. Good. So it should work. I type sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start and the screen goes blank for 8 seconds three times in a row and then back to the command line. I have also tried gdm start without the path before and it says GDM already running. Aborting!

i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

My machine all of a sudden stopped connecting to the internet. I use the ethernet port and don't have a wireless connection. Another computer connects just fine to the router and gets the connection so I know the router and cable modem are working. I tested the cable and it is working. I tried plugging the computer directly into the modem but nothing. I tried sudo ifconfig eth0 down and then up but nothing. I tried sudo dhclient eth0 but nothing. Just keeps saying No DHCPOFFFERS received.

Can someone explain to me how I get it back?

I've got an Ubuntu web server running 9.04 & Apache2. Ive got 2 NICs, one with an internal address for the LAN and one with and external address for the WAN to host the websites. My IP configuration is as follows (/etc/network/interfaces):
# The loopback network interface
auto lo eth0 eth1
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface (WAN)
iface eth0 inet static
[Code]...
When i do a traceroute from a LAN PC and it makes it all the way to the router and then just stops. I'm probably missing something very simple, its been probably 10 years since i took a class in this.

I have a dial-up 56k (no broadband available here) modem connection via ppp0 and a home LAN connection to two other systems through a DD-WRT set up router using eth0 wired and eth1 wireless. ppp and eth don't work to together. Something about DNS and resolv.conf resetting the DNS. I don't understand why it does this or how that system works or why it can't be worked around, but apparently it can't. I can dial into the Internet but if i was connected to the LAN before doing so I can't connect to any sites. The reverse with the LAN is also true. I have to shut down one or the other interface for the other interface to function correctly.
I've asked for help in these forums, specifically networking several times but seem to have hit the back hole of help when it come to issues for which their isn't a solution. I assume they think that if they ignore me I'll just go away, so I've moved to this forum hoping for better results.
In regards to my title question; if I switch to Window7(ugh!) or XP(groan!) will I be able to do these things. I'm sure there is someone with a dual boot system who can enlighten me to this. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper and I did years ago have an Ethernet and ppp0 dial-up connection working together with ICS. I don't understand why doesn't it work now? OF COURSE if you have solution to my problem so it will work with my Ubuntu Lucid systems I'd be forever in your debit! I really don't want to return to using windows.

I want to do some basic web hosting, mainly for the experience. I have verizon fios for my isp, and what i am wondering is can i have the public ip address that they give me when i connect out to the internet point back to my linux box?
The reason that i am asking this is because i want to register a .com and i would like to have that point back to my linux box, i have looked at a few services and it seems that godaddy.com will do this and they seem to be the best choice. Before i register the .com i turnd on my httpd server but i am not sure how to get the public ip point back to my box...?
I have been doing some research and i am learning about things such as
ddclient
openvpn
port forwarding
nat
dynamic dns
Verizon fios like most isp's uses a dhcp connection meaning that the public ip address i get will change 1-2 a year. What i don't know is how can i setup my network at home preferably with iptables to have that public ip routed back to my linux box at home? I am using fedora 15 for those that are wondering...
Also when i enabled port forwarding and started my web server and tried loading http://mypublicipaddress in firefox i am directed to a verizon page with a login and password prompt.
I am aware that i will need to get certain information from my isp to have their public ip address routed back to my linux box but i am unware of what to ask them...?
If anyone here can tell me the following i will be so happy because it seems like a lot to hosting at home but i really want to learn...
here is what i need to know?
1) What kind of questions and information do i need to ask and get from my isp? DNS info? Logins and Passwords?
2) What do i need to do on my linux box to have that public ip address routed back to my linux box at home?
3) What rules do i need to add to my iptables script to allow this, i know there are certain nat rules that need to be added and port forwarding is needed as well..
4) anything else you can think of that i need to do...

I've run into a of a routing issue pertaining to packets leaving a firewall, traversing and IPSec tunnel, hitting the target and then returning via a different tunnel, finally arriving back on the source firewall but on a different interface from where it started. Once the packet has returned to the firewall it is dropped I've been unable to discover the reason for the drop. Two sides to the system, Firewall A and Firewall B. Each firewall provides the default gateway to its respective side and offers a backup IPSec tunnel to the high capacity tunnel handled internally. The Layer 3 Switch uses OSPF and takes care of the bulk of the behind the scenes routing between the sides. In case of failure the Layer 3 switches direct traffic to use the Firewall tunnels to route traffic.

I've been using samba without issue on Fedora 11 (x86_64) and decided to upgrade to F13 on one of my machines. Upon install I installed samba with the command: Code: sudo yum install samba samba-client cifs-utils I can now see the smb.conf file and could probably use samba via command line; but, I would really like to use the GUI to configure samba as I have in the past. The problem is, there is no samba gui. How do I get the samba GUI back under: System->Administration where it usually is?

I am running ubuntu 9.1 on a Dell Dimension 2400. After installing ubuntu on the pc, it was automatically recognizing my router and connecting to the internet fine via ethernet. Then, my roommate unplugged the router and it won't recognize it. I can't access my router settings, and ubuntu is recognizing it as "inactive" but every other computer in the apartment runs fine. My PC uses a broadcom ethernet controller, and my router is a Linksys wireless N.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook. Even though the bluetooth light is on on the machine itself, the bluetooth icon at the top of the screen has been greyed out. Now, after trying to fix the problem, the icon has disappeared altogether. Before the icon disappeared, while the icon was greyed out, I was unable to enable it. If I clicked on the greyed-out icon, it told me bluetooth was on but disabled. Now I need to know how to get the icon back and to enable bluetooth.

I upgraded my netbook (HP Mini 5101) from 9.10 to 10.04 yesterday. Everthing (including bluetooth) seemed to work, as it did before. Today I tried to install a 2.6.35 kernel from maverick backports (the kernel ppa), but it didn't work for me and I removed it again. Now my bluetooth is gone (bluetooth applet does not show any devices) but wireless still works.
I already tried to remove and reinstall the driver package via apt-get (sudo apt-get un/install bcmwl-kernel-source bcmwl-modaliases) but nothing helped. code...
