How do I find the maximum number of concurrent connections (in any state)? I'm running RHEL5 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5. Also, does tcp auto tune affect the number of concurrent connections or is it mostly used for dynamic buffer size allocation?
View 3 RepliesFTP servers I use frequently have imposed a simultaneous connections limit, usually 5-10 at the time. It was no problem under Windows, since Windows artificially limits allowed FTP connections to ~10 as far as I know. But it is a problem under Linux very much since I cannot find how to limit them :/ So far I used these clients: Native FTP client (Places -> Connect to FTP server). No apparent way to limit connections.
FileZilla. Under particular server settings you can limit number of simultaneous connections. Also you can do that globally in Edit -> Preferences -> Transfers. Problem is, it doesn't work, I still keep getting the 530 Sorry the maximum number of clients (10) for this user are already connected. And netstat shows quite a few simultaneous FileZilla connections no matter that I limited them to 1 both in global and local settings.
NCFTPPUT. 10 successful uploads and hi 530. Total Commander under Wine. Same. NetBeans IDE integrated ftp. Same. Some other crapy FTP clients which names I already forgot. Same. OS is Ubuntu 10.04 So, is there any way to force any of these FTP clients to use less than 10 concurrent connections?
Is there any limitation of concurrent ftp connections that can run on the RHEL 5.2 server? I cannot find out the answer yet.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi've got a select based application that wants to support a large number of mostly idle connections. the code is java and works on windows, suse enterprise linux, mac os x. it does not work on centos 5.5 (32-bit, 2.6.18 kernel, 1G of memory).
i've read and followed the directions in various articles about tuning linux for large numbers of connections (including the C10K problem), and gotten the number of sockets up to 3200.
these didn't make any apparent difference:

on windows, i can get up to around 78,000.
on suse enterprise linux (a few years ago), i got up to 90,000. that's where i got bored and stopped.
on my mac laptop with os x (snow leopard), i got up to 10,500.
i have used ulimit -n 10240
my current goal is 10k sockets.
the test is that i'm opening one socket at a time until it fails. when it fails, many of the sockets which have already been opened also fail, in one giant cascade. sounds like a buffer / memory problem.
each group of 64 sockets gets a thread to manage select calls for them. thus i'm only using around 61 threads total when it fails.

Taking into account the host of each virtual user's home directory can also have more than one subdirectory, which should be restricted to a subdirectory. Is beyond the control of the operation of these sites in a subdirectory. Best local restrictions or limitations to the overall situation.

I need to limit the number of ssh connections a user has. All the users are using tunnel only so their shell is set to /sbin/nologin The logins do not open a shell they just create the tunnel so /etc/security/limits.conf has no effect on them at all.
I tried setting 'MaxSessions 1' in sshd_config but either that doesn't not do what I expect it to or it plain does not work as even with a normal user I was able to open an unlimited number of sessions. I need a good secure way to limit each user to 1 ssh session without them having a shell but Im unable to find a solution.

Is it fair to say that connLimit and hashlimit are very similiar on Linux i.e. while hashlimit caters to limits for groups of ports, they both set the connection rate limit per host? How in IPTables, do I configure a policy that limits connections on a port that encapsulates the total sum of all connections from all hosts? i.e. I do not want to allow more than 6000conn/minute for port range that is the sum of all connecting hosts?

but all of them are leading me to what looks like a fundamental theoretical problem: a filesystem with concurrent access needs someone to manage it, and who's going to manage it if I can't trust the server? Or refuse on principle to trust the server? There would need to be some trusted entity communicating with every client and making decisions to keep the filesystem and/or block device consistent, right?
Is my understanding correct, or is there any way of achieving what I'm trying to do?
I currently have a RHEL 5.4 software development server. A lot of my developers are using windows desktops and they need to run interactive sessions on the server. I need to support between 4-6 concurrent users on the server. I tried doing this with VNC but I was never able to set that up for more than one user at a time.

I know that networking seems to be functional since I can ping local devices on the network. I can't resolve DNS names however. I suppose this is because network manager usually handles DNS? I was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)
ping just drops out. edit: weirdest thing! I just retried and now can not emulate the problem for internode. freebsd still won't show. that is less than five minutes between problems and resolution! I'm a bit confused about how ssh encrypts connections. I've read a few articles on ssh and they talk about 'keys pairs' (that is public and private keys) on the server and client computers. However, ssh doesn't seem to use these keys for encryption. What are the keys it uses? This question occurred to me when I was trying to make a remote login to an Ubuntu machine. From a remote login perspective, I haven't generated keys on my client machine and haven't enabled key based logins in ssh. (I use the default password based login). If there aren't any keys on my client, then how does encryption work?

I dontt know if this is the correct site for my question, but nobody MySQL related, have an answer yet. For MySQL accepting remote connections, my.cnf file must be edited (bind-address line or skip-networking line in that file). Well, that file in my Fedora-MySQL installation does not have such lines, so i assume, TCP/IP connections are allowed in MySQL. When i try to connect to the MySQL server it refuses the connection with the error 2003, that in short, means no TCP/IP connections are allowed. I disabled the firewall and retried but with no success, enabled the firewall again, and nothing happen. Is Fedora not accepting TCP/IP connections?
