Networking :: Lucid Lynx Suddenly Lost Connection ?

Mar 5, 2011

All of a sudden without rhyme or reason, My Lucid Lynx install stopped connecting to my network. This was without any intervention from me as I did not modify install or change anything prior to this happening.

What I have gathered so far is that upon initial boot eth0 seems to always be disabled. So I ifconfig eth0 up to bring it back online. All the settings in the network applet seem to be intact for my manual network that has DHCP disabled. Let me re-iterate that these settings worked fine for months then all of a sudden something went belly up. The same machine will connect fine with the same settings from within Win7.

ifconfig command shows both eth0 and the loopback interface but eth0 never manages to secure the 192.168.1.3 address that it should have. ping 192.168.1.1 returns "Network unreachable" so it appears the connection is being cut off at the machine and not the router. I did check to make sure the connection was even recognized and it sees the wired connection going to the router, but nothing else.

/etc/network/interfaces only shows two lines regarding the loopback interface and nothing else; eth0 seems non-existant within this file which I find odd.

Fedora Networking :: Ethernet - Suddenly Lost Internet Connection

Jun 16, 2011

I installed Fedora today, and I automatically had internet connection, I never had do configure anything myself. Then, I was playing around with VPN for a good while (trying to set up the VPN connection to my University), and now, I suddenly lost my connection to the internet!

But only Fedora can't connect anymore, the Windows PC has connection as well as my Mac OS X (I dualboot Linux on my MacBook). The Ethernet connection works as well, when I unplug the cable, Fedora gives me a message, but I just don't get into the internet!

Does anyone have an ides what I have to do? I don't know anything about network connections and I'm new to Linux...

I already restarted the Computer, but that didn't work, and Google didn't really held either.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Music Suddenly Stopped Playing In Lucid Lynx?

Jun 7, 2010

After a successful upgrade to lucid, everything was going GREAT (including FINALLY having surround output) until now all of the sudden music files won't play... When I double-click a file, Totem opens automatically, and it says it's playing, but there's no sound and the bar does not move across at the bottom. In VLC, the bar moves like it's playing, but there is still no sound. Doesn't work when I hover the cursor over a file, either. In previous versions of Ubuntu, a simple reboot would fix this, but that doesn't work with Lucid... Online streaming works fine.

Ubuntu :: Lost Power During Lucid Lynx Installation

May 1, 2010

While leaving my laptop to install the upgrades, I hadn't noticed how the power cord had slipped loose. When I came back my computer must have shut off due to battery loss. When I booted up my computer again, I couldn't boot up Ubuntu under any of the kernels, -20,-19, etc. I get cryptic messages such as "unable to enumerate USB device on port 2," device not accepting messages," and "device descriptor read." i definitely intend to recover my data. I had been upgrading from 9.10 to the latest version of lucid lynx.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Lost DSL Connection

Sep 13, 2010

The computer is a K9n6pgm2+ mainboard w/2gig of RAM and an AMD Phenom Triple Core. My Harddrives are /dev/sda=320gig and /dev/sdb=80gig. Resident on sda is Ubuntu 10.04 (fresh install) w/Windows XP installed at the final 40 gigs, installed after Ubuntu install and then used the 9.10 live CD to reinstall GRUB. On /dev/sdb is Ubuntu 9.10.I installed the fresh Lucid install 3 months ago when I purchased the 320 gig HDD to replace the failing 40 gig and it has run perfectly until yesterday. I presently have a 2Wire Modem located at 172.16.0.1 and I have a new Motorola in the mail but I presently cannot get Lucid to find my internet connection.

If I boot into XP everything is fine. i can go all over the net. If I boot into Karmic, all is well. I am typing this in Karmic so it is strictly a Lucid problem and I have tried all that I know to do and I really want my Lucid install back.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dial-up Networking In Lucid Lynx 10.01 ?

Feb 16, 2011

I've been running 8.04 Hardy since its first release, and was hoping to deal with its loss of support by going to 8.10 but learned that it has already been dropped.

So I'm back to installing 10.04 - and up against the bizarre choice to drop dial-up networking! Fortunately, I have my 8.04 machine still live, and I've researched it extensively without success.

The best summary of what I've done follows this post I found online:

-----QUOTE-----

I read many threads about dialup, including those on this forum; made sure to get an external hw modem [USRobotics 5637 USB, advertised as controller-based and tested to work in Linux], to avoid the softmodem/winmodem problem.

Using the 10.04 LiveCD, I installed the four .deb packages that are in poolmainwwvdial and in poolmainwwvstreams.

Now I'm stuck because I get errors when I try command line stuff, errors like "cannot open /dev/modem" and "can't find /dev/modem in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"

I'm confused; I've read so many threads with so much different info that I can't sort it out. Maybe I'm following info that applied to earlier versions of Ubuntu. Every error I try to fix leads to more errors. Can someone suggest a constrained, step-by-step procedure to ensure I've mounted the modem, added myself to whatever groups, and whatever else I need to do?

I know there's no wizard to make it simple, but is there a checklist or something to help me sort this out? I have the ISP info, DNS primary+secondary server numbers, phone numbers, etc. Is there a UI/graphical path, instead of command line? Had no idea this would be so difficult.

Ubuntu Networking :: Suddenly Lost Ability To View Webpages

Apr 3, 2010

I should have poked around a little harder but I remember that I was experimenting with an ssh proxy when a the hotel. Apparently when I setup the proxy settings in Chrome I must have clicked the "set system wide" button and set every browser to browse through the proxy. I even had to enter a password to change that setting. I thought I changed it back after experimenting but apparently I did not. Today I just started my Ubuntu 9.04 laptop to find that I can not browse web pages. I tried multiple browsers including Chrome, Firefox and Epiphany. Each one gives me the same error message:

Epiphany:
"www.google.com" dropped the connection.
The server dropped the connection before any data could be read. The server may be busy or you may have a network connection problem. Try again later.

Firefox:
Connection Interrupted.
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

Chrome:
This webpage is not available.
The webpage at [URL] might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

So now most of you are ready to ask me to check my connection using ifconfig etc. But here is the rub: I can download updates, install software using apt-get, ssh, scp, download files with wget, ping web sites and browse the net using the text browser Links (so pretty much everything else works.) I cant figure out what has happened. The last time I used my laptop was this past weekend in a hotel using their wireless and then connecting using a captive portal. And everything worked fine.

My only theory is the hotels captive portal might have messed up something but what that is is beyond me. I tried using both wired and wireless connections and still the same thing. Re booting does nothing. So in order to surf the web I have to use my virtual box Windows XP image. So here I am typing this message in Firefox on windows XP in a virtual machine on my Ubuntu laptop that for some reason will not let me view websites.

Ubuntu Networking :: Headless GNOME VNC Server On Lucid Lynx Desktop ?

May 9, 2010

I had to do quite a lot of digging before I managed to work out how to do this. It turns out to be reasonably straight forward, and so here is my howto all in one place.

Objective: Connect to my Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) Desktop machine (which does not have a screen or keyboard) using a remote desktop viewer and get my usual GNOME desktop interface. And have the desktop persist while I am not disconnected.

I have recently discovered one niggly issue with some of the keys being messed up. 'm' and 's' in particular? I am looking into it and will update this post when I have resolved it.

The following steps were performed on a freshly installed version of Ubuntu 10.04-desktop. Just for clarity:

Code:

Install a VNC server. There is a choice of servers I chose the "tight" one.

Code:

Setup your VNC password. This password isn't very important as my setup will only allow for connections via SSH, so 123456 is what I used. One can possibly disable it?

Code:

At this point or the first time you run 'vncserver' (I forgot to check) the all important and much discussed ~/.vnc/xstartup file is auto generated. This is the make or break place where you can either get GNOME over VNC or not. My xstartup which required NO changes was:

Code:

Give the VNC server a test, by running it from the command line.

Code:

Try connecting to the VNC server:

Code:

Ok if that all worked then great! It all did for me and my machine was fresh from the CD.

Now we setup the VNC server to run all the time. There are a variety of ways of doing this. Since this howto requires the use of a SSH shell one could quite easily run the vncserver (as we did above to test it) and then disown (haven't tested if this is actually required) commands the first time you connect. This would leave the VNC server running until you used the vncserver --kill command. This would be a suitable approach if you had many different users wanting to have VNC GNOME desktops.

For convenience in a single user setup we can get the VNC server to be started at boot time:

Code:

Make the contents of 'vncserver.user' (credits to some smart guy on some blog out there that I couldn't find again. and then I made a few improvements):

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Network WiFi Slow Speed

May 18, 2010

A lot of people have the problem to find themselves with Lucid Lynx 10.04 and experience massive issues when connecting to wireless - me too. As a service, here some relevant links which promise relief:

[code]...

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Failed And Suddenly Stopped Working

Jul 4, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.4 side by side with my Vista. This is on a PC I leave on permanently and use as a sort of Sever, so Security and Network connection are VERY important on this device. I use it for documents and IP PBX (telephone system). I currently use Vista and 3CX, but I plan to roll it over to Unbuntu full time once its up and runnng correctly - I will just need to change the Grub2 conf priority. After install, all was fine and I managed to make many changes to settings, apps and updates, but I have noticed in the past week when going in to make further changes the network has suddenly stopped working! According to Network Manager and the icon on the panel it is connected and I can not see anything obvious that is not correct. I tried doing a PING (192.168.1.1) from Network Manager to the main router, but it failed. I know that there is nothing wrong with the network nor the card or PC it all sits on. It's working now with Vista and my other machines. It must be a config some-where.

Ubuntu Networking :: Suddenly No Connection Anymore - Connecting Wireless With My Netbook

I am using UBUNTU 9.04 on a HP mini notebook. I pratically never had problem connecting wireless with my netbook, expecially with this connection at home. Until yesterday. There were some line problems, that have been solved after some hours. Then I was able again to connect.

I didnt do nothing on the netbook. After 2 hours, connection gone. Now, even if other laptops are wonderfully connected (to the same line), mine has a dramatically slow connection (in the sense that is able to open just the first page of google if I am lucky) or no connection at all (even if the signal looks good on the network panel.

I tryed the help for wireless troubleshooting, checked for device recognition. Putting in terminal sudo lshw -C network Says disabled. But the device of the wireless on my pc is on, and it's also enabled in its panel.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Connection Suddenly Slow - Dns Problem / Troubleshoot This?

Apr 1, 2011

A couple of days ago my internet connections suddenly became very slow/intermittant.

I thought the problem was at my DSL provider but after more checking the problem seems to be in Ubuntu/Linux somewhere.

Reason: I can dual boot with windows 7 and have no ptoblem at all. Also I tried a Ubuntu laptop on the same router ethernet port and it also works fine. So its not my hardware or my provider, and its not a general Ubuntu problem either.

There are no error messages in any of the /var/log files and ifconfig looks normal.

It seems to be a DNS problem as it's the initial connection to a host which often times out. If I get a connection, I can e.g. stream an radio station fine.

If I try to e.g. traceroute any host it times out (no reply).

Ubuntu 10.10 is totally up to date as of today.

I'm stuck! How can I troubleshoot this to find the cause?

Networking :: System Hangs When Nfs Connection Is Lost?

Jun 16, 2010

I have a server which is located in the basement. The server exports a few directories which I mount on my desktop using NFS. From time to time, the connection gets lost. The server is also not always on. I can't change that part, so I worked out a script which notifies me when it's going down, and when it's back up again. It also mounts everything back.However.. As soon as I loose the connection, my desktop seems to be gone. KDE doesn't work, but I can use a few applications like Konsole, google-chrome, firefox, stuff like that. But the plasma-desktop around it hangs.

As soon as the connection gets back again, everything works. I have this issue only when my desktop is running while I loose the connection to the server. If it's down when I start my desktopworks properly. Unless the server comes alive, the nfs directories are mounted and the connection is lost again.I'm not really sure if this is a networking case, it could also be KDE related, but I figured this was the most reasonable place to put my topic in.My hardware:

Ubuntu :: Wacom Bamboo CTL-460 In Lucid Lynx ?

The new Wacom Bamboo Pen (CTL-460) doesnt work in Ubuntu Lucid out-of-the-box. You need a newer kernel module than the one that comes with Lucid by default. Its pretty easy to get it working though, you just need to know how.

First, install some compiling tools and header files:

Now unpack, configure compile and install it:

The tablet should work now. You can also add the module name to /etc/modules to automatically load it on boot.

He also says (and I can confirm) that the gray lines are the new borders of the tablet. A little annoying, but I imagine one could configure that, too.
