Aug 1, 2011I have succeeded in using Remote Desktop Viewer to make a VNC connection to a remote WAN computer and it was quick enough to manipulate the remote computer in real time.I found the host name by getting the remote target computer to put the following url into a browser - http://www.showmyip.com/ - It returned the address for the router which I put into the Host: text entry box in the Remote Desktop Viewer window. E.g. for my computer at the time of submitting my enquiry the address was 'host81-129-54-226.range81-129.btcentralplus.com'.The remote router that I connected to needed to have the port 5900 forwarded to the remote target computer.I now want to progress to running VNC through a SSH tunnel for additional security. In the Remote Desktop Viewer there is a configuration line
'use host' <text box to enter host name> 'as a SSH tunnel'.What is the correct syntax to enter in the text box? Networking :: Very Low Network Performance In Host-to-host Connections
Jan 27, 2009The internal network is behind nat done by the PC Router.The TP Link is recieving wireless signal from outdoors and it has switching and basic routing capabilities. I'm using the PC router for better routing options.PC Router (or R for short) is a triple-booting machine - Linux, FreeBSD and Windows. It has two lan cards - external (ext_if) - 100Mbps Realtek 8139 and internal (int_if) - 1Gbps integrated Realtek 8169.The problem is that all traffic from R to the network is slow - about 5-20K, while the traffic in the oppoiste direction is all right - about 10MB that is fine for 100Mbps cables, NICs and switches. The problem persist no matter the OS the pc R is running.I've tried some debugging on the situation as follows:
- put another PC at the place of R - everything is fine. That exclude the possibility of damaged cables, RJ-45s, switches and etc.
- connected both of the NICs to the Internet while the internal network is being disconnected and they both work fine (no delays)
- traffic shaping is not running
- there is nothing in firewalls except NATing the internal network (and it is working fine). Actually these firewall rules have been operational for more than months and everything was fine untill a week or two ago.
- changed the internal NIC with another
- connected the internal network directly to the TP and all of the PCs are getting good network performance. Then connected the R machine to the TP as well and there was good performance between the internal network PCs and R.
- R has good performance to the TP. In fact everything has good performance directly to the TP (when not connecting trough R).
- the problem persist only between R and machines from the internal network.

Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding but i already changed it to 1 at sysctl.conf One of the online forum says i need to configure the named.conf deleted some and run it(named.conf) and successful but still when I run network service I still get the :"Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0" The network is getting the IP range but it doesnt get any Internet connection.
Ubuntu Networking :: Universal Network Folder Syntax For The Network And Other "special" File Systems?
Jun 16, 2011Paths displayed in Nautilus appear to be just that. Nautilus private syntax. Esp with respect to anything "special". Apparently when you hand a path like this to a program to open, you get a folder in your home directory: smb://cyberstorm/c_drive/
At least that is what my program does with it. A folder called smb: in my home directory. Probably because the default folder for the program is the home directory [~]. Is there a universal network folder syntax for the network and other "special" file systems?
I see things like: network:/// and computer:/// showing up in "properties" dialogs for some things. But these are useless to a program apparently.
At least a program written in Qt. Is this a Qt problem, or a problem with Ubuntu not yet making the network a first class citizen in the world of paths? Who do I complain to? Time for the network to be a first class citizen, right?
Networking :: Configure A Network Route To A Host For Testing Network Interface?
Aug 30, 2010today I tried to configure a network route to a host for testing my network interface. Code: route add 192.168.1.15 eth0 As I have to eth interfaces and both interface got their IP from DHCP (192.168.1.11 and 192.168.1.12) and are in the same subnet, I shut the other interface down:
Code: ifconfig eth1 down Then I tried to test the interface by doing a ping to 192.168.1.15.
Problem: When I unplug the cable from eth0 (and eth1 is still plugged) the ping still works. Somehow my linux (it's debian) powers up again eth0 and pings over this port.
How can I stop my linux doing this. I just want to have the route added only on the one interface - not the other. Is it maybe some case of a default-gateway?
Programming :: Unable To Fix Syntax Error In Finding Ip Address Of A Host Name?
Apr 27, 2010Writing a program that finds the IP address of a host name. Sorry forgot to include the line numbers, but where the $$$ is where the syntax error is. The errors are syntax error before "{" token and syntax error before "if". I've looked throught the code for a couple hours and can't figure out what's causing it. The code is attached below.

OpenSUSE Network :: Connect To Servers Via Ipv4
Jun 8, 2011Is there a way to access today the openSUSE servers via IPv4? My ISP does not support ipv6, nor my router, and I can't install software right now in openSUSE, because it wants to access te servers via IPv6.
If would be grat to have the download.opensuse.org ipv4 address.
I really need to install some packages, they are required for my school project.

Jan 23, 2011I'm working in windows, and that's why I have been able to access the network. In F14, I was able to access the router address while the internet access ain't. Tried restarting network, and still the problem persists. Tried [URL] and the only thing that i've infered is that IPv4 Failed: FATAL plus, the routing table showed 0.0.0.0 as one of the entries (Gateway). So, i've deleted the wired network configuration from the Network Configuration and checked whether the os would pick it up automatically. It still didn't work.

Jun 28, 2011I had some fun here, with my local Cyrus IMAP daemon. I "updated" the machine to openSuse11.4 (from 11.2) by doing a fresh install. Because some of my involved HW here isn't capable of IPv6, I switched it off using yast2:

Then I had a hard fight with Cyrus IMAPd, mostly caused by user brain damage on my part... But one thing really looks like a problem on the Suse side of the fence: My /etc/hosts missed the "localhost"-entry for IPv4 ! This was the contents:

I haven't seen this effect on 11.2 here and I haven't seen it on "my other" machine (running 64 bit version of Suse 11.4). But there I think IPv6 is still activated. I will check this, as soon as I get there.
Should this be reported as a potential bug in 11.4 ? Or is there some way, I could have messed up this. (No I didn't edit /etc/hosts by hand, before I corrected this thing)

Jun 11, 2011I have an OpenVPN(10.04.2 LTS) server running in bridge (TAP) mode. Its sitting behind a router and then a cable modem. The VPN works perfectly but I have a security concern. In order to allow the VPN clients to connect to the internet, I had to enable IPv4 forwarding on the server. Is this is a security hole? Can a hacker access my servers connection from the internet (without authenticating with OpenVPN) and access my network. Can someone use Ipv4 forwarding to access my LAN network from the WAN
I used this command to enable ipv4 forwarding

Without IPv4 forwarding my VPN clients can only access my LAN and router, but they cannot reach my modem or the internet.

messages appear in syslog each day. Each URL has from 2 - 6 attempts at various ipv6 addresses. My question is why is bind9 trying to resolve ipv6 addresses? I have done nothing to enable or disable ipv6 and thought that if not explicitly enabled I would not have to be concerned with it.

Feb 3, 2009My Windows guests see my VMware Host Only folders as \.hostShared Folders But when I try to see them from a Linux guest, all I get is frustrated. No permutation of that seems to work. Because the Windows guests see the shared folders I know the host is doing its part in providing them. After two days of not finding an answer on the VMware Workstation forum I finally figured out that the problem really is how to look for them with Linux. With Linux I can turn off all NICs accept the Host Only NIC, put smb://172.16.138.1 into the address bar and see all the shares on the host, but not the folder designated as the host only folder.

Aug 11, 2010I have a somewhat complicated network setup that I am testing on an internal network. I have the following route setup:
PC Client (192.168.2.100) --> Router (192.168.2.1) --> DSLAM (on our internal network) --> PPPOE Server (192.168.9.1) on Linux Ubuntu 8.04 on interface card eth2.
On the same Linux Ubuntu Machine on interface card eth1 (static IP 192.168.5.100), I have an Asterisk SIP server plugged into it. SIP Server = 192.168.5.101 (static) I need the PC client (192.168.2.100) to register via SIP soft phone to register on the SIP server (192.168.5.101). From the PC client I can ping as far as the eth1 interface (192.168.5.100)...but cannot ping the SIP Server (.101).
From the SIP server (192.156.5.101)...I can ping 192.168.5.100, I can ping 169.254.5.228 (Eth2:avahi), but not sure what that is. I cannot ping the pppoe default gateway (192.168.9.1), which I think you cannot anyway. No firewalls are running. My IPtables I cleaned out totally. I think it might be as simple as a route add, but I really have no clue. Tried building a virtual bridge using brctl LINUX betweeh eth1 and eth2, but that made things worse (could not ping anything after that)

Ubuntu Networking :: 7.10 - No IPv4 With Eth0 - Can't Connect To LAN
Apr 19, 2010Current problem: fresh, clean install of Ubuntu 7.10 on known good hardware does not use/produce/get/have an IPv4 associated with eth0, so cannot connect to my home network for Internet access.
Background: Have been wanting to build and maintain a home file server for some time now. Have also been wanting some hands-on practice to help me progress from Noob to Intermediate, eventually advanced Linux Tech. (I have two decades of tech support experience, but only small fraction of that using command lines and almost zero Linux.)
Anyway, every time I download and attempt to burn a recent distro on my Vista Shuttle, I only end up making drink coasters and mini-frisbees. so I thought that I might have better luck if I used a Linux Workstation to download and burn a server distro.
That's where I an now. I took one of my fully functional WinXP systems offline, replaced the WXP HDD with an old 3.2 GB, dug out my 2008 edition Linux Bible, popped in the DVD that came with it, and installed Ubuntu 7.10.
Everything else seems to have progressed smoothly, but I cannot seem to get the onboard Via chipset ethernet controller to talk to the router. When I run "ifconfig" in Terminal, I see IPv6 info, but nothing for IPv4.
When I try to configure eth0, it doesn't matter whether I set it up for DHCP or static... nothing works.
Is there a command line tht I can use in Terminal to manually configure eth0 to use IPv4?
Ubuntu Networking :: Configuring IPv4 With Fixed Ip?
Aug 2, 2010Our router is pretty old and only capable of giving fixed ip and there is no support for IPv6. Via the gnome networkmanager I try to set a manual IP to 192.168.1.123 and a netmask to 255.255.255.0 and a default gw at 192.168.1.1 . However, this does not work.
If I open a terminal and type:

sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1
Then I get a perfectly valid connection to the internet.
ifconfig by it self returns:

ffor me it seems that the gnome network manager doesn't save the information that I gently ask it to.
I can fix it with the CLI commands, but I would like to know whats going on.

Sep 22, 2009Linux has duplicate address detection mechanism for IPv6 and nothing for IPv4 in kernel. At boot time, initscripts take care to check for the duplicate address but when an IP address is assigned using ifconfig or ip utility, no error is generated.

Apr 20, 2010I have tried clean installs of Knoppix v0.6, Xandros 2.0, and Ubuntu 7.1... same issue with all. I cannot seem to get eth0 (via chip on mobo) to get/have/use IPv4. ifconfig shows only IPv6. (I cannot paste any info because linux desktop is on different box.)
End result is that I cannot get the linux desktop to connect to my lan, either with dhcp or with static ip.
I have a belkin router configured as my gateway 192.168.3.1 and nothing fancy with the setup. I have dhcp open for 192.168.3.245 thru ...254 and at most there are only 4 systems in home connecting with dhcp at any time. all other systems have static addresses.
I have two decades of desktop and lan support under my belt, but relatively small amount of command line experience and almost no history with linux (unless you count a dozen unsuccessful attempts to burn linux distro install discs on this Vista desktop).
Therein lies the start of my prob. I need to build and manage a fileserver for my home, but cannot seem to get a working installer cd or dvd to burn from anything I download.
So I said to myself, "Self," I said, "you're a tech. Build a workstaion, use the DVD that came with your Linux Bible (2008 Ed.) to install one of the linux distros on it, then download a recent, stable server distro and burn it using the linux workstation."
Unfortunately, if I cant get an ipv4 connection to my home network, I cant get out to the Internet to download any newer ISO files.
So what am I missing or doing wrong? How do I tell linux to stop trying to use IPv6 and let me use IPv4?
BTW, eth0 works just fine if I install Windows on that PC, so I know its not bad HW. Could it be a driver issue? Or do I need to use some Terminal command to turn off IPv6 and reconfigure eth0 for IPv4?
Networking :: Mounting Unique Filesystem Or Directory By Network Booted Host?
Apr 6, 2010I have a number of diskless hosts which are to bootth PXE and mount their root filesystem on an NFS share. Most of the NFS share will be common to to all of the diskless hosts. No problem with that part.I also need part of the NFS shared filesystem to be unique to each individual host. The only difference between the hosts is the ethernet MAC. I use it in the DHCP server to key a specific unique IP to each host. I would like to be able to use either the MAC, or the IP, or any other unique identifier that can be derived very early in the boot process to access a filesystem or directory that is unique to each diskless host.
I need/want to do this because I need/want to isolate all of the system maintenance to one small part of the boot host. Modifying the hardware (these are VME CPUs) in any way is not an option; they must be field swappable, with all maintenance isolated to the boot host(s).I know I could run ifconfig and parse its output to derive an IP &/or MAC, but that seems a bit kludgey and fragile. The DHCP server is presently assigning IPs. I know I can arrange to pass a unique option value via the DHCP server, but don't know if or how this can be retrieved on the diskless nodes. I am presently passing the 'root=' kernel argument from the bootloader, but I don't think there is any way to pass other filesystem information using that mechanism.
I know I can pass some kernel arguments from the bootloader, but there doesn't seem to be any generic message that can be retrieved in userspace as part of the boot process. I've scanned around in the /proc filesystem, looking for the IP or anything else that seems to uniquely identify the host, but don't see anything there, either.The init process has not yet been cast in stone, but is very likely to be a BusyBox built-in
