I just wonder, is it possible (using Linux 2.6) to limit overhead done by ethernet interface to one specific core. Ie. I have core2duo CPU, and two ethernet interfaces: eth0 and eth1. Is it possible to move system load caused by packets comming on eth0 to CPU0, so the other core (CPU1) will be idle?

Ubuntu :: NIS And Binding To YP Server

Jul 14, 2009

Each time my machine reboots, it takes about 2 minutes for an attempt of the YP server to bind (then it fails).

Code:
jim@LinuxBox:~$ /etc/init.d/nis restart
start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 2469: Operation not permitted
* Starting NIS services
* binding to YP server...
* ....
--> repeats 10 times <--
* .... [fail] [ OK ]
jim@LinuxBox:~$

The previous is a YP server command while running. What happens at boot time is similar. I think I need NIS for my work. This looks like an old common problem (maybe on AMD64 - Ubuntu; which I have). The following link has a good description of NIS and this particular problem. It is a complex problem that I am spending some time working on. It looks like my problem may be that an NIS master has not been created. [URL]. I am trying to share files and run remote desktop with XP machines on a local network. The lack of NIS server may be contributing to my difficulties.

General :: Making X Server Not Binding 0.0.0.0 Or Listening

Sep 2, 2010

I'm trying to execute X server (automatically), which will not bind to 0.0.0.0 (port 6000) - meaning X server will not listen on generic interface. If it's possible, I'd prefer X server not to listen at all (and communicate through other IPC if needed), is there a way to make it not listening at all? -nolisten flag or something like that? (and do it automatically, every reboot). Also, Is there a way to make X server bind to 127.0.0.1(localhost) instead of 0.0.0.0(generic interface)? It should be in one of the configuration files or the start-up command to run X.

Server :: How To Adjust EMacs Key Binding To Accommodate Screen

Jan 28, 2010

I've recently started using the "screen" multiplexer and it is really handy for some cluster work I've been doing. But if I am in emacs and I press C-A to go to the beginning of the line and the C-N to go to the next line, I get shunted to the next "screen" window. I imagine there are other conflicts as well. I did some googling, but all the suggestions showed how to adjust emacs key-binding to accommodate screen. But I don't want to adjust emacs key-bindings because that is the whole reason I like emacs. I think custom "screen" key-bindings go in .screenrc. Does any emacs fans out there who have run into this problem have any .screenrc code they would be willing to share with me that worked well for them?

Networking :: Vhost With Reverse DNS On ADSL2 Connection Not Binding

Mar 22, 2010

I'm working on an ADSL2 connection that connects via PPPoE and it is assigned a static IP. On top of the static, the ISP has assigned a small block of 6 useable IP addresses.

- The primary static IP is on the interface ppp0
- The other 6 IPs are configured as eth0:1, eth0:2, eth0:3 etc.

With the above setup all IPs are reachable and useable on the internet.

- The revers DNS has been updated for a few of these and resolves with no problems. ie: eth0:1 has the 123.123.123.123 IP and resolves to blah.host.com and blah.host.com resolves to the IP address.

- To test this I have tried a program like BNC to bind to the IP address on eth0:1 but for some reason when connecting externally the host address is coming up with the FQDN on ppp0 interface IP, not the vhost IP.

Questions is, is this the normal behaviour since its a PPPoE connection and would only work if the ISP supported a bridged connection? something on the ISP end not allowing this to work?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Server - Wireless Interface Not Working

Feb 18, 2011

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 server and all working great except the wireless interface. The card is an edimax EW-7711ln. I installed ndiswrapper using the driver rt2860.zip found here [URL]. Then I followed this guide to configure /etc/network/interfaces [URL]. I think the driver is loading fine but I can't connect to the access point. Here is some debugging output...

Code:
peter@Peter-Server~$: route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
Code:
peter@Peter-Server~$: iwconfig .....

So I can scan and see the accesspoint with ssid alleycat but I can't connect. I tried disabling all security to see if it was a problem with my key or some encryption settings but even that didn't work. So frustrating because it seems close to working I must be doing something silly. Incase anyone is wondering why I am running a server off a wireless interface, its just a LAMP development server on my home network.

my wireless interface got ip from another server like 192.168.1.3 ,now if i do ping on my target board for 192.168.1.1 it goes through wireless interface to the 192.168.1.1 wireless server.but when i do the same from target board connected linux pc its not pinging from linux pc i could able to ping to 192.168.1.3 but not 192.168.1.1 .I think i need to write a iptable rule properly on my target board to forward the 192.168.1.* packtes to wireless interface.

Networking :: Will Bringing Down Loopback Interface Make Whole Server To Go Down?

Dec 14, 2010

I have a client's linux server where someone added a script which sends spam mails from the server's local loopback address (127.0.0.1) all my seniors worked on it and couldn't trace the script on the server this issue was going for a week, now I have an idea to bring down the loopback interface of that particular server(ya, that was not a permanent solution but just had an idea), but my support manager told that it will bring the whole server down(so far as i have learn't loopback address is used only for testing the NIC card's functionality), is that really bring the server down.?. How ever i tried this using a test machine all the connections works fine even after i bring down the loopback interface. As my client's server is a production server i can't test it there without clear knowledge, can any one help me out whether will it bring down the server or will it cause any side effects on it(i know that you guys are experts so i am asking it here)?

Server :: Get The XML RPC Interface On RTorrent?

Feb 19, 2010

I've been trying to get the XML RPC interface on rTorrent working for some time now, without success. I'm running Debian 5.0 'Lenny' (stable) i386 on a Intel Atom, and need to let an external application communicate with rTorrent via XML RPC.

I've hand compiled the XML RPC C (1.06) libraries and tried the default packaged version for Lenny, and tried almost all possible combinations of the libtorrent10/libtorrent11 libraries and the rtorrent 0.7.9 through to the latest 0.8.x release. As far as I can see the compilation of both the XML RPC libraries and libtorrent work flawlessly (using no special parameters for the 'configure' scripts). I've compiled rTorrent with the --with-xmlrpc-c syntax, which is also accepted, and it compiles flawlessly.

Code:
system:~# xmlrpc 127.0.0.1:5000 system.listMethods
Error: Curl failed to perform HTTP POST request. curl_easy_perform() says: Empty reply from server (-504)
However, rTorrent (running in a shell) reports

Fedora :: Gnome 3 - How To Change Key Binding

Jun 28, 2011

I'm slowly coming to terms with Gnome 3 but one thing I can't get used to is using the "Windows Key".

For me it's a difficult key to use regularly. What I'd rather to is remap the "Switch between overview and desktop" action to alt-space, which I am used to from "Launchy" which I have been using in Windows for some time.

A couple of issues though - this is already mapping to "Activate the window menu". I never use it though. Are there any implications of remaping it?

Secondly, what is the command I need to map the key to, in order to emulate the Gnome 3 "Windows Key" behaviour?
