Networking :: DHCP Offers Not Being Limiting To Specified Vlan Interface On Debian?
Jun 25, 2010
I have configured dhcp3-server on my debian box and I'm wanting to offer dhcp on one of the vlan interfaces. The dhcp is functioning but when I test applying it to a different vlan, the original PC can still get an IP. For example: eth1 has vlan100 and vlan200. Our managed switch has the ports configured such the pc1 is on vlan100 and pc2 is on vlan2. This works fine and I can inter-route between vlans with static IPs. Our dhcp config is currently set as:
I used to connect to the internet via a Linksys router using the following terminal commands (Network Manager has never worked for me on any Ubuntu install):
Code:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down sudo dhclient -r wlan0 sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
[code]....
However, I recently changed the old modem + router for a new wireless modem (a Thomson TG585v8 ). Now, the result of that last command is this:
Code:
amosupremo@amosupremo:~$ sudo dhclient wlan0 Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.1.3
[code]....
No working leases in persistent database-sleeping. I've tried to connect in Natty(both Ubuntu and Kubuntu) and it's not working either.I also purged Network Manager and installed wicd and I managed to get an intermittent, slow connection.
1 ) Machine Brand and Model (PC/Laptop): No brand. I built it with the following specs:
AMD Athlon II X4 2.6GHz 2 HD: 100GB Sata (Ubuntu and XP64 install) / 80GB IDE (XP) 4GB RAM Gigabyte Motherboard
2 ) Wireless Brand, Model and Wireless Chipset:
Code:
amosupremo@amosupremo:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0ace:1201 ZyDAS 802.11b Bus 002 Device 004: ID 049f:000e Compaq Computer Corp. Internet Keyboard
[code]....
3 ) check interface:
Code:
amosupremo@amosupremo:~$ ifconfig wlan0 wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:72:04:d0:04
[code]...
I am also attaching the wicd log. It contains a session where I got the intermittent connection. I stopped that connection and restarted it (with the same results) two times.
i want to resolve the above error. I'm using systemimager to autoinstall system images on pc's connected in lan. while doing this i got the error No DHCPOFFERS received. Also at the time of booting my pc it shows the message No dhcp and/or proxyDHCP offers recieved. But i've started the dhcpd deamon on my pc. Also the systemimager rsync deamon is running. The two pc's are also connected in lan properly.
Still while autoinstalling the image on client it fails showing the error message... No DHCPOFFERS recieved. what do i do in order to make my autoinstall work properly? How do i come to know whether the dhcp server is running or not? What will be the exact problem in autoinstalling?
My Linux machine's all Ethernet ports are connected to Cisco 2960SCG switch. Linux machine is having two Ethernet cards. First one is using "e1000" Ethernet driver and the second one is with "nxge" Ethernet driver.
Problem is; I am successful while trying to delete VLAN interfaces over motherboard PCI Ethernet card, but if i try the same on other PCI card the following messages are coming, and soon system getting hanged.
Message from syslogd@ at Wed Feb 10 17:48:11 2010 ... localhost kernel: unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth5.390 to become free. Usage count = 4
Bofore using nxge based Ethernet card I used e1000 based only, for that also I had same problem.
I just had an ATT Uverse RG installed. However my Smoothwall router that previously worked fine with the ADSL SpeedStream is no longer accepting an address assignment DHCP ip address from this new gateway. (3800HGV-B)Any thoughts ideas or experience working with this hardware? ATT only supports Windows and Mac
basing on the research and trial and error which am still on the trial stage with errors here's the scenario We have 5 VLAN's with and existing Windows DHCP Server, that serves 5 Scopes for the 5 VLAN's 192.168.100.x and 192.168.200.x IP Addressess evrything works well on our Windows DHCP server, what i want to do is replace our windows dhcp server with a linux box , with one NIC , ive read about VLAN on linux 802.xx something and VLAN Tagging am already confused on what to do.. what i want to ask you guys is an assistance implementation the vLAN on linux then the dhcpd.conf
Google is full of users which cannot get a DHCP address So no matter what search term I use, I only see solutions which do not apply to this problem. I am running Debian Squeeze on a netbook eeePC 1001P I have a wireless interface and a wired interface defined in /etc/network/interfaces:
Code:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp
[code]....
Both interfaces WORK! When I have plugged in a cable, eth0 acquires and gets an IP, when I am in reach of the WiFi, wlan0 gets an IP address. Now when I want to use only wireless, and I have no LAN connected, this is what happens at boot:
Code:
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3 DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 5
[code]....
This is fine, however it takes forever (I think 60 seconds) before DHCP decides to time out. That is awkward. This is my wife's computer and I cannot tell her to intervene manually when she is either in Wifi range or on the LAN. Why is dhclient called when it is detected that eth0 is not ready? How can I disable acquiring a DHCP address on an interface which is not ready? when a link is not ready, acquiring a DHCP address is skipped. How can I configure that? I have looked thru the ifup scripts, but nothing. Where do I see what is happening when the interface is auto eth0?
is it possible to setup a DHCP server using the loopback or a virtual interface? I installed Sun VirtualBox on my fedora system and want to try and kickstart them from within the same box on a virtual network. Is this possible and has anyone done it? I only have a single NIC in the box and it is on my public network.
I am totally new to Linux and have just installed ubuntu 10.10. After configuring the network interface via dhcp I started getting these messages that come in so frequently I can't configure anything else.
[87.186415] Stack:
Why I am getting this messages and more importantly how do I get rid of them.
I have an ARM system that has been pre-loaded with some variant of Linux. I don't know the distribution; I can only see the kernel number in dmesg.
In /etc/network/interfaces, I set eth0 to auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp
After I save and reboot (or run ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0), I can see that the networking system is searching for a DHCP server and actually obtains a lease on a valid IP address, but when I run ifconfig, the interface has not been assigned the address that it pulled down from DHCP. It has been assigned a 192.168.. address.
I noticed in dmesg that a variable "ip" is passed to the kernel at boot with the same address that is overriding my DHCP address. How can I disable this overriding behavior? I noticed a dynamic environment variable in u-boot called ip. I set it dhcp and saved it to nv storage, but the problem persisted. I tried to set the u-boot environment variable ipaddr to dhcp, but was informed that this wasn't a valid value for the variable. How can I get the interface to be configured through DHCP?
I have 2 ISP where give me IP Public with ISP A (/29) and ISP B (/28). So, I connect this two ISP to unmanaged switch. And from that switch, I take one cable connected to eth0 on the server. (Note : My server have 2 dev ethernet, eth0 and eth1). eth1 will go to the Switch which will go to the LAN.
My Question is : 1. Is this possible to make bandwith control on the gateway server with mode separating International bandwith and local bandwith (my country bandwith)? ie, for my Mail Server I will give the "intl bandwith" only 512 kpbs and for local bandwith with 1Mbps. What a software can I use for this model ?
2. Which model I should to used, with NAT or with Bridging router? That's all for now..
You may have seen some other posts by me about my final year college project. Im implementing a web based network management website. Iv got a lot of the functionality working at this stage but one part is allocating bandwidth.
Iv got an eircom 3mb broadband connection and I want to be able to split this between users. At the moment I only have my desktop and laptop on the network. Im looking for advice on how i can allocate bandwidth with iptables and/or the tc tool in ubuntu.
My website is on an ubuntu virtual machine and written in php. Whatever about running the iptables and tc commands from php I still need to figure out the actual commands i need to use in the first place.
Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces
Code:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto vlan100 iface vlan100 inet static
[code]....
why it can't reach the gateway, when I do a tcpdump I can see the DHCP requests come in on eth0 but the server never responds and I'm pretty sure its because it isn't "seeing" them since it thinks there isn't a network connection but I don't know how to trouble shoot to find out where the problem lies.

I am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4 openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108 openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.
The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0 eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?
the problem is that with the above configuration, i connected 3 linux boxes on the switch but non of them could connect with each other. when i did a ping, it says "destination unreachable"
what am i missing out here, and whats the fix?
i assigned static ip address to these boxes, also there's no router in this network by the way. i dont think i will need one either as all the machines in in the same vlan2.
Currently I have my eth0 interface getting a DHCP address but at times the DHCP server will not be reachable. Sooo what I would like my server to do is if it cannot find a DHCP server assign a static address to eth0. Then start the DHCP service so it can then dish out some addresses. How can I do this? Surely it is possible
Using debain 5.0.4 with webmin 1.500 and dhcp3.i have two subnets (192.168.1.0 & 192.168.2.0)at home. The debain dhcp server has 1 NIC using eth0 and eth0:1 (virtual).
I have configured the dhcpd.conf file using webmin, with a shared network, given the two subents are on the same physical network. each subnet has a pool of about 20 addresses.Problem is that when a host boots up which is under the 192.168.2.0 subnet (using its MAC add - no fixed ip assignment), it gets the associated DNS and gateway ip addresses for this subnet, however, the ip address is assigned from the 192.168.1.0 address pool.
I have checked the net extensivly finding all sorts of discussions and solutions. My problem occurs in the same manner irrespective of whether i connect a host direct to the dhcp server or via a (netgear) switch! Please can someone advise on what settings i might be missing, or do i need to set up DNS/DDNS and/or a firewall/router before this works properly?
I have a teenage daughter that understands Ubuntu, but not so much the terminal, and she does not know the superuser password. Unfortunately, she regularly goes on the Internet during the nighttime and in the early morning. What I am attempting to do is prevent anyone from going onto the Internet during the night (11 PM - 5:30 AM) unless they know the superuser password or a fair bit about the terminal.
I have already tried some commands, however all of them can be bypassed by restarting the computer. ex. sudo ifconfig eth0 down
For additional information on my Internet:
My Internet connection is relatively slow, so I would prefer if the solution does not hinder it any further. It is slow because there is no high-speed in my area, and I am forced to use Xplorenet -> "Fixed Wireless". I do not have a router.
I'm preparing to "follow" these directions which will make VirtualBox's networking behave like VMWare's "NAT" networking. Of course, these instructions are for a Ubuntu/Debian setup.
I am quite certain that I can write a script that'll do the equivalent steps on my Fedora 11 box -- which is acceptable to me. I would, however, like to know how to splice this stuff into NetworkManager and/or /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/, to do this the "right" way.
The desired networking behavior: -VM's get assigned addresses via DHCP on a virtual network -VM's can talk to each other and to their physical host -VM traffic out to the 'real world' is NATted
i have configured transparent squid with dansguardian for content filtering i used this squid server ip on client gateway(not on browser) for content filtering, is it possible that i could use this squid server in different VLAN.
I'm trying to setup a Asterisk box with two NIC's. The idea is that one NIC connects to the LAN on VLAN2 (for internal voice) and the other to the SIP trunk on my ISP's Cisco 1811, configured for VLAN3.
Some info: The Cisco's VLAN1 + 2 are available on my switch. VLAN1 = 10.105.44.x with gateway .254 (the Cisco). VLAN2 = 10.106.45.x with gateway .254 (the Cisco). The Cisco's VLAN3 is available on only a single port on de Cisco, connected to one of de NIC's of the Asterisk box, eth1, with IP 10.106.46.1 and gateway .254 (the Cisco). The other NIC, eth0, is connected to the switch, on a port setup for VLAN2.
So, what I'm trying to achieve: Use eth1 tagged with VLAN3 to connect to the SIP trunk. (I could do this with a static route because my provider has a fixed IP to connect to) Use eth0 for all other traffic.
Here are some config files I've setup so far (I'm stuck on connecting to the SIP provider):
