View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One running Ubuntu and IOmega External USB Hard Drive 250GB to make up for the 16GB on the netbook. both have been running fine untilRecently I had the Iomega plugged into a Windows XP Laptop which froze, I disconnected the Iomega and switched off the Laptop and rebooted, when I re plugged in the Iomega It failed to display any Items after a little bit of time and one or two shutdowns the Iomega worked fine on the XPHowever when I plug the Iomega into the Netbook it appears under Files and folders but when I open it it just shows me a blank white screen.

Where can I find a driver for a Prestige Desktop Hard Drive for use on Linux (OpenSUSE 11.3)?
Where should I look, in general, for drivers for this OS?
Used gparted to format a brand new iomega prestige 1 tb usb hard drive (ntfs) to ext4. The problem is that I can't create folders from nautilus because I don't have permission (root). There is one folder present already lost + found that appeared after reformatting. i can't access that folder because of permissions. Was any of this supposed to happen after formatting an external drive and how can I fix this? I intend to use grsync to back up important folders but can't create folders from grsync also. The only account on ubuntu is mine and i have access to root privileges.

The installation went flawless but i had a second hard drive while i had windows vista to store all of my media, i.e. mp3 and pictures. Am i able to access the stored information on the second hard drive in ubuntu? Will i need to delete the partition in order to use the second hard drive for future use? The second hard drive shows up in the disk utility application, but not in the computer/file browser section. The file system for the second hard drive is hpfs/ntfs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy media library isn't huge, but it isn't tiny (~50 GB). Every month or so, I just manually copy ~/Music, ~/Pictures, and ~/Videos to my EHD, and delete the old backup. But this is far from ideal. It's pretty slow, for one thing (~50 GB all together). It also isn't versioned, so if I ever want to go back multiple versions, I'm out of luck.
Is there any simple, stable, incremental way to do this? I'm open to using traditional version control systems like Git for it, although I haven't used them before for anything other than code. Command-line is fine (especially if it's scriptable). I only need to back up these 3 folders--anything that's not media is stored in my Dropbox.
I ran out of space on my /home directory and added a drive. I've got it in my fstab file but how do I get Ubuntu to add the space to my /home? The line I put in fstab is:
/dev/sda5 /media/mynewdrive ext3 defaults 0 2
I have an existing install of 10.4 on a 320 GB hard drive without home in it's own partition. I have a new 500GB hard drive that I want to install 10.10 on. After installing 10.10 and making /Home on it's own partition can I copy the entire old home folder including the hidden files to the new home partition on the new hard drive so that all of my programs and files are saved. I don't have enough room left on the old hard drive to create and copy home to a new partition. Am I going about this the right way or do I need to rethink and do some kind of backup restore on the new hard drive or some other way. I am trying to accomplish this so that in the future I can install a clean copy of Ubuntu when they are released without losing my current settings and files. I started out with 7.10 but my learning curve is slow.

I want the downstairs pc to act as a file server and to run my torrent client, it is running Ubuntu desktop version and has xbmc installed too for use with the tv. The upstairs htpc has xbmc live on and will access the media from the file server. What I am looking to do is to be able to log into my ubuntu machine remotely from a laptop running windows so I can manage the files and add torrents for download etc, but for this to be a complete remote session, rather than taking control over what is already being shown on the downstairs pc, like VNC does in windows.
I have two user accounts set up on the main ubuntu machine, the admin account and a media user account which is set to go straight to xbmc after log in. Also how can I make sure that the media drives are automatically mounted to allow access if the admin user is not logged in?
I'm sure that this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find the right search terms. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which has 2 physical hard drives. I installed Natty to the 1st drive and during the install I used the entire 2nd drive as /home. I would like to upgrade the 2nd drive to a larger faster drive. I have the new drive in a USB enclosure so that I can access both drives. I'm pretty sure I need to boot from the CD to do this. Then I need to copy all files unmount the small drive then shut down, install the larger drive and have the system recognize it as /home. I am just starting to creep out of N00B stage and don't want to screw this up.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot windows XP/OpenSuse 11.3 system running from a hard drive. They are both 32 bit in spite of the fact that the system can run 64 bit.
I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit (the wife insists, not yet a Linux possibility) and OpenSuse 11.4 64 bit, but having the programme files on an SSD for faster loading, with my data files on the existing hard drive.
I'm happy with the notion of getting the SSD going as a dual boot system. With Windows, as I understand it, it can tell it fairly easily where to look for the "my documents" folder on the hard drive.
However, the Home directory in Linux is not quite the same. How (if it's possible) could I run the SSD but use my existing Home directory on the hard drive?
Is it possible to stretch the logical volume "/home" over to a second hard drive using LVM? Would this have to be done during the Debian installation or could it be done after the installation is finished? Should I just make a 2nd /home partition?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am installing a new hard drive to replace my old one that contained the /var and /home directories. I don't want to copy the whole directories, especially from home because there is a lot I don't need in it.What I need to do is set the mount points for the two partitions I have made on the new drive to /var and /home, but it will not let me do this with the other drive still running. I can't unmount /var and /home while the computer is running, and I would guess that having two drives with /var and /home on them would not work.
So, how can I set the mount points on the new drive and copy the files I need from the old to the new one? It would seem that would require two /home partitions to be mounted at the same time, but I don't think that is possible. I am sure there is some way, probably many ways knowing Linux so please,
I have just installed Ubuntu desktop and I am using this pc as a file server. I have already installed Samba and have it operational and viewable by my windows computers. Now the problem is that I have 2 hard drives and the way that I have Samba set up it is sharing my home directory which is wonderful but my windows computers do not have access to the second hard drive. I search for several hours this morning trying to figure out how to do this but cannot figure it out.

Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set a Ubuntu home server to be a Network Attached Drive, a Media server, and Backup server.All of the computers (mostly windows 7 machines) can see and connect with the shared ubuntu folders, and read write and execute files into the folders. The problem is when programs are installed onto the server they operating systems cannot have "Full control", or change the owner of a file.
This is an issue when using the Ubuntu shared folders as remote hard drive locations because when Windows goes to run the files it keeps popping up with the "Open file - Security Warning" preventing files from being natively run.
This is the command I tried using:Code:mount -t cifs //NAS1/reports /home/user/public_html/reports -o rw,umask=0338,uid=587,gid=584,username=admin,password=passwordIt looks like the user can't access the files on the NAS drive. Is there any way to do this?

Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.

It seems as though programs installed on my laptop just pick their own conventions for saving data and none of them are the same. Some programs store their data in self named hidden folders, others use ~/.config and others use ~/.local/share to put their stuff. Is there a way I'm missing to get all these to cooperate or are we doomed to always having programs making themselves at "home" and just tossing off their shoes wherever they like?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.

I am trying to share a hard drive on the network. (Essentially the hard drive is for another computer which didn't have the physical space for it so this computer is like a holding place for the hd). I read somewhere that I can use samba to do this. But in all honesty I have no idea what I am doing. What would be the best way to share this drive? Also understand, I know little about networking.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a network where several machines are connected through a switch. I'd like all machines to be able to read/write to/from the hard drives of the other machines. for example:
machine1 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine2
machine2 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine1
machine3 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine1
machine3 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine2
etc etc...
all of this reading/writing will be done through the terminal, and programatically. rather than SSHing into a machine to read/write files from it, I'd be happy to set up some 'conventions' on how to access hard drives of various machines. for example:
'hdd1' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.1).
'hdd2' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.2).
'hdd3' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.3).
etc etc...
this way, when I want to read/write a file, its PATH will be something like ~/hdd1/myfile.txt; ~/hdd2/anotherfile.txt;
I want to clone an SGI IRIX hard drive over the network. The hardware is ancient, no usb, and the CD rom is shot, its scsi and Im worried I wont be able to get it to boot a live cd.
