View 4 RepliesFifteen years ago buying a new computer was easy, magazines provided comparative tests of PCs for one's budget. Now typical magazine specs are not high enough for my needs:
I need a PC that can duplicate a 5 gb file in less than 10 seconds.
Where do I find comparative tests for PCs at this very high end?
After many modifications, I managed to install ns2.28 , but some validation tests failed. I got the following message at the end of validation test:
validate overall report: some tests failed:
./test-all-simple ./test-all-tcp ./test-all-testReno ./test-all-newreno ./test-all-sack ./test-all-tcpOptions ./test-all-sack-full ./test-all-tcpVariants ./test-all-LimTransmit ./test-all-aimd ./test-all-greis ./test-all-rfc2581 ./test-all-sctp ./test-all-tcpHighspeed ./test-all-frto ./test-all-friendly ./test-all-srm ./test-all-realaudio ./test-all-ecn ./test-all-ecn-full ./test-all-quickstart ./test-all-hier-routing ./test-all-lan ./test-all-mcast ./test-all-vc ./test-all-mixmode ./test-all-red ./test-all-adaptive-red ./test-all-red-pd ./test-all-rio ./test-all-vq ./test-all-rem ./test-all-gk ./test-all-pi ./test-all-cbq ./test-all-schedule ./test-all-jobs ./test-all-intserv
to re-run a specific test, cd tcl/test; ./test-all-TEST-NAME
Notice that some tests in webcache will fail on freebsd when -O is turned on. This is due to some event reordering, which will disappear when -g is turned on. I tried to run the test individually one after another, but that is too time consuming, it prompts for permission after every test and thus runs many test & opens a lot of xgraph window. The tests I run so far individually, agreed with the reference output. Now I am wondering, should I report a bug about it, or should I hire a kid to run those failed 40 tests( which require hitting the ENTER key 1200 times,maybe ), or what else should I do.
i have a OpenSUSE 11.3 with Gnome desktop ( core i5 processor, 2 GB DDR3 RAM ) want to run memtest, plz advice me which prog is best for it and where to find documentation or videos.Moreover is there any tests for motherboard / processor

I have a USB sound card that works sometimes with Firefox and with the VLC media player, but in the middle of a Gnome session it drops out and the sound starts coming from the internal card. In the Gnome Sound Preferences USB Audio is still selected and the test sounds still come loud and clear from the USB card, but the applications are ignoring this and have switched to the internal card.
Some system components are:
Centos 5.3 x86_64
Toshiba laptop AMD Turion
Roland UA4-fx audio interface sound card
Gnome 2.16.0
The Gnome Device Manager shows the UA-4fx card and under it "USB Audio ALSA playback" and "USB UA4FX ALSA Control Device" devices are listed. I want to make the USB card the default for all applications and have internal card take over only when the USB card is unplugged.
I have two SUSE(2.6) virtual machines running in the same subnet with two network cards each as shown below.

Ultimately my DB will run in VM2 and any DB requests coming in at 2055 of VM1 should be forwarded to port 2055 of VM2. Since I do not yet have a DB running I am trying to test with netcat.
I'm doing some tests and playing around with postfix in a test squeeze server. What I want to achieve is a postfix mail server using ports 465 and 587 with smtp authentication to send mails. I followed this howto: [URL].. and I'm using a php script with pear functions to test sending emails to a gmail test account of mine. This is the script:
<?php
require_once "Mail.php";
$from = "Webmaster <webmaster@server>";
$to = "My Name <myaccount@gmail.com>";
$subject = "This is sent with pear as a test";
$body = "This is the body of the message";

He very kindly installed my Edirol UA25 soundcard, and when i click 'test' on System-preferences-sound, it indeed plays a sound. The problem is that when I try to play anything from the internet on firefox, or any sounds in VLC, or any other application, it doesn't work. I believe I'm running Ubuntu Studio, version 8.04, but I am not sure. I have an Athlon 64 bit processor if that's relevant.

You plug in the camera via USB, and then the camera display is on your monitor. From there you can do everything your camera does, like taking pictures of video. Does anyone know if there is linux equivalent software that can do this?
I have found this software, but new cameras aren't supported.

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?
We're using both SuSe and RHEL servers. Our servers are running behind firewall device and remote root login is disabled in SSH.
We're using NAT.
Remote client connections including failed logins are logged into the /var/log/messages but what is logged are gateway ip of our LAN - the LAN IP of Firewall device.
How can I logged the external or public IP of the remote client?
I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a low powered headless box (DLINK DNS323) running linux that I keep in a back room at home to handle large file downloads. It does not have X installed. Everything is handled at the command prompt through an SSH link. In the most common case, I log in from a remote location (perhaps a coffee shop), start the download, then disconnect and go about my business.
If I try to download from a free account of rapidshare, filesonic, or some another file service there is a manual handshake process (decode a captcha, wait for 60 seconds, etc) that requires a graphical client to complete.
I would like to somehow navigate through the handshake using my laptop (running Firefox) (perhaps through a proxy on the DNS323), but direct the download directly to the DNS323 (i.e., not routed through the laptop) so that I can disconnect and expect that the download will complete without further involvement from me or my laptop.
Is there anyway to direct a download to a remote path? Any other suggestions for solving the problem?
I am trying to use ssh to run a remote command in the form ssh remote_computer 'command'
I keep running into the problem that ssh can't find the command(s) I want to execute.
For example, if I ssh to the remote machine and do
ls /usr/bin/sa-learn
it tells me it is there.
On the other hand if I do
ssh remote_computer 'ls /usr/bin/sa-learn'
[Code].....
I also don't understand why ~/bin is not in the path on the remote computer, but that is another matter.
I need to logout from a KDE 4.5 session remotely (via SSH) for a number of reasons. How can I do that from a bash shell?

I just brought myself a ASRock 330ht with blu-ray and remote. I've installed Ubuntu and all relevant drivers fine (including lirc). I've got xbmc on startup and the remote works brilliantly wiith that.
My problem is, I'd like to use my keyboard/mouse as little as possible (as I mainly use it from my bed) so would like to bind certain buttons to the ir remote (such as firefox, or a link to iplayer etc). I've taken a look at the lircd.cfg and it's basically empty, except for a pointer to another cfg that I can't get access to even as root (although I didn't try too hard).
Is there a tutorial or program that I can use to configure my own lircd.cfg? If I was too, would it take preference over my xbmc settings and stop working for that?
i have been encountered this issue since ubuntu hardy 8.04.3, and now after i clean installed to ubuntu lucid 10.04 with the latest update up to june 6, 2010, i still could not reboot via command line in a remote ssh.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed 10.04. I currently have a monitor but I want to ditch this and use a VNC client to do what I need to on my server. Here is the process I'm using:
1) Remote login via SSH from another computer
2) Once logged in, I run 'service gdm start' to start up GNOME
3) I have the login set to automatically login in with my user account
At this point I thought I was home free and I could connect via VNC, but now I'm getting a prompt for a keyring unlock, as explained here: [URL]..This has been a total pain.
1) Are there any other simple solutions out there so that I can remotely log in and be able to connect to my server via VNC?
2) If not, how do I get past this keyring issue?
I have 2 ubuntu machines. I used to use the ubuntu's remote desktop program to work remotely from home on my office box, but since I installed 10.04 it remotes in ok but nothing gets changed on the screen when I click. I see the mouse move fine. If I click on something and then drive to the office I see the remote screen was in fact clicked on with random windows open, depending on what i was clicking on. Why is the screen not refreshing?

I am using a color screen in my terminal, having cusomtized LS_COLORS environment variable. Problem is, every time i log in to a remote host using SSH, i have to manually export LS_COLORS. You can say put that in ever .bashrc file in every host, but that is not very helpful because the remote host are lab servers that keep getting new OS very often(testing stuff), and the team and I usually log in there with root user.
Is there a way to do that?
