Hardware :: SUSE 11.1 & 11.2 Installation Crashes At About 16%
Feb 2, 2010
I have been running SUSE 10.3,& 11.1 on a box for some while. I have changed the Mobo from an ASUS K8N to a Gigabyte K8N Pro. I have changed the Graph Card from a 180Mb GF 3 to a 256Mb GF6800 GT. I have tried to install both Suse 11.1 & 11.2 from downloaded ISO images,
checked the medium - both OK, (I have previously installed 11.1 from the same DVD on to the original box, no probs). With both 11.1 & 11.2, on booting, from the DVD, the install goes OK through the first stages, ie up to installing the packages, to about 16% completed, then it stops. Everything becomes dead, mouse, keyboard, complete crash. I have tried the install 3/4 times always with the same result, on two separate hard disks, one SATA & one IDE, it is obviously something to do with the hardware changes as everything else in the box remains the same as when previous installs went OK, & all worked well. The box works well with Win XP installed on a separate Hard Disk.

I've installed SuSE 64 11.3 (with updates) as a new installation 4 times because of video driver problems. On the 3rd installation Firefox crashes. I had no difficulties with 11.2 with the same hardware. I followed CAF's suggestion to another user to add it to the repo list and run a zypper install. No difference. I've added no new hardware. I then re-installed SuSE and made no changes to any setting or driver, but again, no Firefox continues to crash.
HARDWARE:
Video card: ATI HD 5870 running I believe at 1920x1200
1366 CPU 2.8 GHz
MB: Asus P6X58D Premium
Ram: 6 gb

Alright. The day before yesterday I *upgraded* to SUSE 11.3 from 11.2 and other than one single exception that required my input, all went smooth as silk for the install.
I was excited to see that, in Kopete, my webcam, a Microsoft VX-3000 actually worked for the first time! But I discovered that apparently Kopete doesn't support voice chat, even though webcam works.
So after searching for an application that would do BOTH webcam AND voice, I found out about GYachI/GYachE. It was installed via RPM from Packman. The install didn't appear to have any exceptions when it took place. However, whenever, in KDE, I attempt to start GYachE, before the window for it can even appear for more than 1/4 second, it disappears, evidently crashing (I gather).
Now I am not super Linux savvy. There is so much I have not learned, and one of those things is how to find out what failed when starting this application. I assume there is some sort of log file, but I have no idea where it is, what it is called, or how to use it even if it does exist.
I can live without voice chat, but I sure would like to have it! I have searched for an answer and found nothing to help so far.
BTW, I am using the 64 bit version of SuSE 11.3. I wonder if that has to do with the problem...
I am loving 11.3 so far. I use KDE and plan on adding stuff from the KDE site. 11.3 seems to be a solid distro from my end. I hope there is a way to solve this issue.

Last friday I went home from work and just turned off my monitor, as a program I had written needed to run a durability test over the weekend. Unfortunately it seems that the moment I turned off my monitor, Linux just froze, quite evidently as it said this morning that the time was still Friday 17:13.
From the syslog I got the following on that time:
What this means and what I can do? It's not the first time it crashes as soon as I turn my monitor off.

I've installed OpenOffice 3.2.1 on Linux s390x System z server after downloading the OOo_3.2.1_Linux_S390X_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz file from [URL].. I installed it using the following command rpm -ihv *.rpm. Now everything installs successfully with no errors. But when I cd /opt/openoffice.org3/program and type in soffice to start OpenOffice I see the splash screen for a second, the loading bar moving to around 33% before it crashes and shuts down with no errors or exceptions. Have tried uninstalling and installing many times with no sucess whatsoever. Last few lines of strace ./soffice added below,

I upgraded not so long ago from version 9.10 to 10.04. What never happened before then started. I have system crashes all the time. When I play Solitaire, use Firefox and copy files.
I use ubuntu now for several years (at least since 8.04) and I never had a system crash before. I have a P5P800SE motherboard, a celeron 3.06 GHz processor and use 512 MB of memory. Ubuntu is installed under windows XP professional version 2002 service pack 3.
If not I will return to version 9.10 and wait for version 10.10.

I have been trying to resolve this issue and it's bewildering me... I have been trying to do the install on Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) and after setting up the keyboard language the installer locks up. The error message mentions it was unable to launch Gparted as it crashed.
I have also tried to launch Gparted from the system admin apps and Gparted will show it is trying to read the hard drives and then crashes. I have tried updating Gparted from the repo's and on launching it also crashes too.

I have a Lenovo T400 and I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade I am not able anymore to start ubuntu.
I get the Grub boot manager. After that I only see the a black screen and sometimes a few pixels.
I tried already to remove 'quite' and 'splash' in the boot options. And I added 'nomodset' and 'fb=false'.

We've had a very big problem with our computer chrashing for a while, and I'm not sure if it's Linux Ubuntu that's the problem or not be we'd like some feedback from the experts of this forum. I hope I'm posting this in the right place. So, a while back we had Windows XP on our machine, and it had been running well (as well as XP is capable anyway, ), but for some reason it wouldn't boot XP properly and would only allow us to open it in Safe Mode.
We opened up the computer to take the memory chips out and back in, just in case that would help, and the inside was terribly dusty. Also, we have a loose heatsink, and the chip underneath is filled with dust. Not sure what the chip is I'll try to get some picture of it pretty soon. Anyway, the inside of the machine obviously wasn't too good.
So, we installed Linux Ubuntu LTS 10.04 on it from a CD to try to fix the booting problem, and this worked -- but now, our computer crashes constantly after turning on. It crashes whatever we're doing -- we can do something light, like Google Chrome, or something heavy, like video editing, and have it crash on us. So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the programs or anything -- I'm guessing it's either an issue with the computer itself or an error with the operating system. Sometimes we're lucky and can be on the computer for half-hour to and hour and a half, but it's still really bothersome, and will get in the way of any projects that require saving or recording. I'd guess it crashes around 10-20 times a day.
I included a video of it crashing and what it does just in case that could be of any help. Link: [URL]... The screen goes blank for a moment -- shows oddly colored, fragmented bars in the center of the screen (sometimes red, sometimes silver), shows this text:
Code:
* Speech-dispatcher configured for user sessions
* Starting the Winbind daemo
winbind [ OK
* Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd [ OK
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my custom tower. The live CD loads, I select Install Ubuntu, I get to the screen with the system checks, I hit install and... crash.
I'm guessing it's a hardware issue as I have it installed on 3 other computers no problem. Here are my specs code...
I've tried the 64bit and 32 bit versions, same thing. I tried installing it with Wubi, I reboot and it crashes shortly into the install. Is any of this hardware incompatible? Any suggestions I can try?

I can boot off of the Natty LiveCD, run it for days fine. Install, everything's smooth. Boot up and run some updates. That's where it hung the first time around. Display froze, cursor and keyboard would not respond, audio was stuck looping. This was a pain because it corrupted some stuff with apt. Any point from power-on onward is "eligible" for a crash. It seems to be random, but there also seems to be a trend of it crashing earlier on as time proceeds. This is a custom built computer, and I've tried other Linux distros like Debian and 9.04 UNR, they all crash somewhere in the install. Leaves me thinking it's a hardware fault, but why would it run perfectly fine off of CD but die when installed then?

I've installed Fedora 12 64bit, but the computer crashes while booting, basically after the irqbalance or rpcbind steps.
Here are photos of the error messages:
Here are my hardware specs:
MB: Biostar TF560 A2+
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+
RAM: DDR2 800 Dual 128 bit, 2T (4GB)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 3870
The sound and network cards are integrated but I've tried disabling them from BIOS and the problem persists.
Note that I've tried Ubuntu (32bit and 64bit) and it also crashes about 30 seconds after loading the graphical interface (either installer or login screen). Fedora's graphical installer worked flawlessly, tho. I've also tried SLAX (using it right now) and it works without any problems.

I've recently tried installing Fedora 14 on a HP z600 workstation, but I'm running into major stability issues.
I can successfully boot fedora 14 from the live-cd and can perform basic tasks from the terminal and within gnome. However, I sometimes experience hard-crashes when I am browsing the web with firefox. In fact, I can pretty consistently cause this by downloading a relatively large file (~100MB) with firefox. Interestingly though, I don't experience any problems when doing the same with curl.
Furthermore, I run into the same issues when I install fedora 14. Worse, the system seems corrupted when it recovers after rebooting... sometimes failing to make it to the login screen.
I'm suspicious of the network driver, but also of the memory. I have performed the memory test included on the live-cd, but it reports no issues. This may be so, but from previous experience with computers, I don't trust memory tests to detect all memory issues.
Ubuntu is similarly problematic; vista appears fine, with limited testing.
*Hard-crash: system locks up for 5 or so seconds, followed by a black screen, and then reboots. There are no error messages displayed.
EDIT: As a point of reference, Fedora 11 seems to be a stable for me.

I am facing some issues with my openSUSE 11.2 installtion. Yesterday i installed win 7 so the grub is now wiped out. I have also taken mbr backup in USB. I tried following things to make things work.[/HTML]
1) Repair using openSUSE DVD booted using DVD then automatic repair but it couldn't find any root partition. After showing error that no root partition found it crashes to a blue screen with advanced configurations from there i was able to use shell but cant see and mount any linux partitions. i tried mounting the root partition it gave the error :"please load module ext4dev before mounting" how can i install grub without losing my present installations.
2) Tried booting with Ubuntu & kubuntu 8.04 live cd .. both gave a error and refused to boot. then tried openSolaris which failed to detect the USB drive so couldnt restore the GRUB to /dev/hda.

I am facing a problem with Eclipse after I installed it today. It keeps closing [unexpectedly] after I click a choice like closing one of the pop-up windows that shows after I choose an option from the menus in the top. With no errors returned or shows up! As an example, when I choose to create new project, and fill in the project information [Name, type, path] and when I click FINISH all Eclipse closes, and I need to re-open it again [I find the project that I created there].

I am having trouble installing the 10.04 RC On my desktop the installer just crashes with a fatal error, before you get to the first screen of the installation process, where you choose to run as live cd or install. On my Laptop i am trying to Install alongside my current 9.10 installation and i keep getting the errors illustrated in the screenies. It is all probably down to my stupidity, but if it is not then this is very worrying 1less than a week before release.

Yesterday, I upgraded my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 10.04. The installation process went smoothly, and the first boot of 10.04 was very smooth. However, after I selected 10.04 from my boot screen, the start-up process went very slow and then froze at a black screen. I shut it down and restarted it, only to have it load normally.
This happens on and off and I don't know why it's doing this.Does anyone have any idea what this could be or has had the same problems?
