Hardware :: PVR-350 Remote Keeps Changing Between /dev/lirc0 And /dev/lirc1?

Oct 16, 2010

I have an Antec Fusion htpc case which has a volume knob that uses lirc. I also have a PVR-350 tv card that also uses lirc. The problem is that every time I reboot both devices switch places between /dev/lirc0 and /dev/lirc1 which results in a not working remote. I tried following the instructions on [URL] to make the lirc device static, but when I do a 'cat /proc/bus/input/devices' only the volume knob shows up. My PVR-350 remote isn't listed.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lirc: No /dev/lirc0 - Actual Device Number Changes On Restart

May 30, 2010

My only issue that I can't figure out thus far is the remote. I'm using a Hauppauge Nova-T USB Stick, and generally the setup for the Nova-T 500 is good. No problem with lircd.conf, .lircrc etc. My problem is that the remote doesn't work on startup. Looked in /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and it says, as expected: REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/lirc0"

Which doesn't work because I have no /dev/lirc0 (I do have a /dev/lircd). However, running /proc/bus/input/devices, I discover that my IR receiver is event5, so if I change the /etc/lirc/hardware.conf to: REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/input/event5"

And restart lirc, it works fine. Unfortunately, upon restarting the PC, the IR receiver doesn't always have the same path - eg it could be event6 or event8 etc - so then I need to fix the /etc/lirc/hardware.conf again.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Option For Canon Remote Capture - Remote Camera Control Software ?

Oct 17, 2010

Canon cameras used to come with a piece of software called remote capture for Windows and MacOS.

You plug in the camera via USB, and then the camera display is on your monitor. From there you can do everything your camera does, like taking pictures of video. Does anyone know if there is linux equivalent software that can do this?

I have found this software, but new cameras aren't supported.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Login To Gdm After Remote Restart

Feb 6, 2011

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine. There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Software :: Cross-platform Remote Control - Remote Desktop Software

Jan 20, 2010

I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

Server :: How To Do A Remote Download To Remote Server

May 5, 2011

I have a low powered headless box (DLINK DNS323) running linux that I keep in a back room at home to handle large file downloads. It does not have X installed. Everything is handled at the command prompt through an SSH link. In the most common case, I log in from a remote location (perhaps a coffee shop), start the download, then disconnect and go about my business.

If I try to download from a free account of rapidshare, filesonic, or some another file service there is a manual handshake process (decode a captcha, wait for 60 seconds, etc) that requires a graphical client to complete.

I would like to somehow navigate through the handshake using my laptop (running Firefox) (perhaps through a proxy on the DNS323), but direct the download directly to the DNS323 (i.e., not routed through the laptop) so that I can disconnect and expect that the download will complete without further involvement from me or my laptop.

Is there anyway to direct a download to a remote path? Any other suggestions for solving the problem?

Red Hat :: Changing To KDE In CentOS

Aug 25, 2010

I am trying CentOS (as a change from openSuse), I have downloaded DVD and have loaded it as a Virtual Machine. So far so good. It did a "quick" install, which leaves me with Gnome as my desktop, I am used to using KDE, so I tried to use "Add/Remove Software" to load KDE. I also want to load other software which I have as RPMs.

Two questions:

1. My VM is not connected to the internet and when I open the package manager it tries to retrieve information from on-line repositories - I have tried disabling on-line repositories. I do not want it to look on-line, so how do I get it to just look at the installation DVD?

2. Is there an easier way to swap to KDE?

Debian :: Changing From HDD To SSD Using DD Command

Apr 19, 2015

My hard disk is failing and I tried to change to a SSD using the dd command. I can boot up but I get a lot of warnings. The first warning is in GRUB that the device GRUB is looking for does not exist. I tried to install bootlogd to get all the messages to post but installing from the synaptic package manager. Running apt-get install bootlogd gives me these messages:

Code: Select all
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
Setting up linux-image-3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.65-1+deb7u2) ...
Running depmod.
Failed to symbolic-link /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae to initrd.img.

[Code] .....

after rebooting I got this from the boot log file.

Code: Select allfsck.ext2: Unable to resolve 'UUID=0ee695a9-d8df-4152-8d32-fc3a99d75f15'
Sun Apr 19 17:26:53 2015: fsck died with exit status 8

[Code] ....

Is there some way to tell the system I changed to a SSD as I think that is causing the problems ? Or if that is not possible is there some way to transfer my whole system (installed packages, settings and files) to an SSD ? If all else fails I still have an extra spare HDD (exactly the same as the failing one) that I can use but I would prfer the SSD.

I am trying to change them simply to "Ubuntu" and "Windows 7", but I'm having some trouble. Using this guide, I am able to change the entries for GRUB2,but it has no effect on my BURG entries. Even if it was just removing the names all together, and just having the icons, that would be fine.

I just have a simple question. When I installed Lucid a few weeks ago, I didnt feel very inspired, and thus left the host name at default. I just changed the hostname today, and I discovered that I can no longer resolve the host for ssh connections to the computer. When I changed the hostname files, I followed this guide: [URL].. Is there a file that I need to change regarding SSH that has a hostname in it?

Specifically, Im trying to ssh and VNC connect to the Ubuntu box from my iPhone. I have a PuTTY client installed on it (from the app store, called iSSH) and up until now, it worked.

Code:

sudo chmod 744 loginWallpaper

then run

Code:

./loginWallpaper.sh

and follow the prompts Make sure the pic you want to use is a .JPG and is in your home directory. Choose Option 1 on your first run. It will move the pic to the proper directory on the system and will open the Gnome Appearance Preferences at the log-in screen. After you run Option 1 logout, goto Background then Add button. Select your wallpaper and "BOOM" it changes. Log back in and run the script again

Code:

./loginWallpaper.sh

only use Option 2 to keep the Gnome Appearance Preferences from opening again.

General :: Changing The Dr-xr-xr-x To Drwxr-xr-x?

Nov 22, 2010

I have no writing privileges for root, user, nor group. After copying Fedora 14 iso image to my USB flash drive, I attempted to take it off to install another distro for mult-ibooting, but was not able to delete the content. I am stuck with no writing privileges on my USB drive.

Here is what may have caused it. When removing the content that was on it before to a /data directory, I accidentally removed the flash drive title = 4003-6F40. So I have directory 4003-6F40 in my /data file. Then after copying Fedora-14 to USB, Fedora-14 is now acting as the title of my USB pen.

(Side note: I never installed using my USB pen because it was before I learned of syslinux, which is what brought me to this issue now that I am trying again to use my USB to install.)
