The above sound card (internal actually, no 'card') works fine in Ubuntu but Slackware 12.2 won't find it. Tried alsaconfig, which seems happy, but no sound. If Ubuntu can do it, Slackware should to, no?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an older HP desktop that I recently installed ubuntu 9.10. Currently I do not get any system sounds. I can get sound from the movie player so I know something must be correct. When booting I can hear the speaker pop several times, but that is it. On my other machine with 9.10 installed I get a sound during the splash screen.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOver the last few days I've been spending some time converting my headless web server into a media center running Boxee for our lounge.
I have managed to get *nearly* everything working with the exception of sound. The computer has onboard sound, both front and back ports, and I tried every combination of outputs and plugs.
I also checked it wasn't muted, or anything like that.
So, I wasn't able to get it working with the stock Ubuntu 10.10 stuff - I turned to Google and found a thread which suggested I download and install this.
I ran the ./install as root, and it took about 3 minutes to install everything. Rebooted and now I'm left worse off than before - this time I actually have no sound card even listed.
I've been thinking some more, and after another hour or two reading through random threads, I think it may have been a mistake to install those drivers.
I couldn't find a way to uninstall them, so I've been reinstalling all the alsa and PulseAudio packages I can find with no luck.
Now I'm stuck with doubly no-sound.
If I can't get onboard working then I'm considering buying a new graphics card with HDMI out (the current one has a hard time with Boxee), or maybe a dedicated sound card instead.
I am new to Linux and ran into a problem with no sound after a fresh install of Debian 6.0.
Here is what I get from my I/Os. (yes speakers are on, plugged in and all volume controls have been toggled and tweaked in every which way.)

I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card installed in my PC. It is of far higher quality than the AC97 sound built into the VIA chipset. I want to use the M-Audio card so AC97 sound is disabled in BIOS.
When using Audacity I can record and play with the M-Audio card as I wish.
When using VLC (or any other media player), Ubuntu insists on playing through the AC97 ports - which I have disabled and which, I would have thought, was a pretty good indication that I don't want to use them.
Even when I configure VLC to use the M-Audio card (using VLC's <tools> <preferences> <audio> <output Device> ) it still plays through the motherboard via-82xx hardware.
What nonsense is this? Surely Ubuntu cannot require me to replug my speakers when I want to switch between VLC/ Brasero etc and Audacity?
I looked at the Pulse Audio apps: good grief! Is there any human being which understand what all that is supposed to be about? I could find nothing which matched my understanding of my hardware or related in any way to what I, as an end-user, want to do with my system. Is there an interpretation of this PulseAudio function available anywhere?
I've gone through the process of installing and setting up OpenSuse, which has been fairly streamlined.
The only problem I am having is with my Soundcard the audio coming out of it is highly digitally distorted unless I set it to 100% or 50% in the sound preferences section. Once this is done, the audio quality is still fairly awful, but doesn't sound like my guitar's fuzz box!
I'm assuming this is some sort of drivers issue and I have a few options in my yast audio configuration that I'm unsure what to do with.

Now, these options are all able to be given a numerical value, first question, what do they stand for and what does the value do?
And second question, does anyone know what a semaphore is in relation to audio codecs? I have worked with audio for years and never some across this termanology?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.
After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.

Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.
Running Compiz as a standalone WM.Managed to get Slim working, will post how later, but have no sound. If I boot using gdm3 the sound works. Obviously gdm3 loads something Slim doesn't, but can't workout what!Tried adding /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog & to my script - no dice, still no sound
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. Intel Core i5, under Sound Configuration in YaST I have '5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio'and 'nVidia Corporation'I have built in speakers in my screen, connected via HDMI. For a couple of days ago, maybe a week or two I beguinne to get a 'snap-sound' in my compurt sound, like an eletrick charge or someting. I comes with about a minutes period. I resently find out that it came from the center-speaker. I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and have this sound-card: 00:09.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP73 High Definition Audio (rev a1)
My speaker system is Logitech X-530 I have located the problem to center-speaker, but the snap-sound only disappear if I mute the center, not lower the input, in the GNOME ALSA Mixer. I have tried to disconnect the antenna to the analoge-TV-tuner. Has anyoe a similar problem, and a trick to fix it? I don't know if it's related to any recent update of the system?
Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

Recently I have started using my netbook (Acer Aspire one D250) alot more due to travelling and I noticed that the mic didn't work. Headed to the Ubuntu forums and saw a thread about installing ALSA. So I did and now I have no sound. From what I can tell ubuntu is no longer picking up my sound devices but I'm sure. Hence why I am here. I need to get my sound working again (obviously) and then in turn get my mic working for mumble and other VOIP programs.

However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. * When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)
* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.
I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.
Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.
trying to get everything set up in Debian lenny on my new Toshiba staellite L500. I have successfully installed the wireless drivers and graphics card and have them both up and running. But I'm having trouble with the sound card. Specifically, it appears to be installed but I cant get any sound or any devices related to sound (speakers, volume control, alsamixer) to work at all.

I seem to be having sound issues on CentOS 5. When I run the sound card configuration, my sound card is recognized and the test sound plays fine but there is no sound coming out of any applications. This just started today and I have made no changes to my computer or installed any new software.
