Hardware :: Microphone Plays Through Speakers But Dead In Audacity And Skype / Fix It?

May 26, 2010

I've got a weird problem with my sound card config.

I usually use a USB webcam with a built-in mic that works fine when I select it in audacity and skype, but I have a soundcard too and I just wanted to check out another microphone I've got.

I plugged it in and played around with alsamixer and managed to get it so that I can hear it through the speakers, but I can't use it in audacity and skype.

There are 3 options (apart from the USB mic) in audacity, and all of them are dead silent. In skype there are even more options for the mic. Same problem.

Audacity has recording device choices of ALSA HDA Intel ALC882 Analog hw:0,0, hw:0,1 and hw:0,2

How can I get the microphone to appear in that list - or is it already one of those options but somehow not configured right? I can't figure out the Alsa config stuff despite reading several introductions to it. Probably too late at night for my brain.

Plus the last symptom - I broke the sound coming from a java app while fiddling with this setup. It used to give alerts and alarms quite frequently, but since yesterday it's been silent, with errors in the log like

"Error: Sound line is not available.javax.sound.sampled.LineUnavailableException: line with format PCM_UNSIGNED 11025.0 Hz, 8 bit, mono, 1 bytes/frame, not supported. "

Ubuntu :: Speakers Play When Heaadphones Plugged In - Sound Plays Out Of Speakers

Jun 17, 2011

I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.

Debian Hardware :: USB Microphone Works With Audacity But Not On Web

Jan 7, 2016

I recently got my USB microphone working with Audacity under: Debian 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u1 (2015-12-14) i686 GNU/Linux.What I'd like to do is use that same microphone at the following Google/Chrome link in order to convert speech to text (mostly for the purposes of automating my note-taking process.): url...But the the microphone is never recognized, so nothing happens.(And, BTW, the same microphone works fine on that same link/site when I'm using my Windoze box instead of the Linux machine.)

Here's further information:
My mic (from lsusb) - Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0d8c:013c C-Media Electronics, Inc. CM108 Audio Controller

Audacity Devices - Host: ALSA; Playback Device: default; Recording: USB PnP Sound Device: Audio (hw:1,0): Mic:0; Channels: 1 (Mono)

Audacity Quality - Default Sample Rate: 44100 Hz; Real-time Conversion Default Sample Format: 32-bit float; Sample Rate Converter: Medium Quality; Dither: None;High-quality Conversion Sample Rate Converter: Best Quality (Slowest) Dither: Shaped

How do I get the microphone to be recognized by my Google-Chrome browser?

Software :: Disable Builtin Microphone In Audacity?

Nov 25, 2010

I am trying to record audio via line-in with audacity (iMac 7.1, ubuntu lucid, 2.6.31-11-rt, ALSA; I uninstalled pulseaudio) and I get input simultaneously from line-in and the builtin microphone. There does not seem to be any option to turn it off, and disabling mic in Alsamixer does not work. I don't think reinstalling pulse will solve this; other people on the net seem to have the same problem with audacity, but I did not find a solution.

I just started with kubuntu 10.04 and first of all let me say I love it! I came from debian lenny with kde so a lot of it is similar. There is one problem: my microphone plays through my computer speakers but I can't record it or use skype with it (I mainly want to use skype). So first question is how do I stop it playing through the speakers and how do I use it with skype?

Ubuntu :: Speakers Plays For 5 Seconds Then Turns Off

I have been using ubuntu for the last year. Everything has been working fine. One day I was in class listening to music through my headsets and closed the lid. The computer suspended and I didn't think anything about it. When I got home and opened the computer up with the headsets unplugged, the speakers were not playing. Now I only get audio through my headsets, but if I suspend the computer with the headsets plugged in and open the computer up with the headset unplugged, the speakers plays for 5 seconds and then turns off. General :: Sound Plays On Headphones And Speakers With Lenovo ThinkPad - Ubuntu 10

Aug 12, 2010

The only thing really missing from this install is this issue with the sound. I've searched all over the forums and i found one thing where you get the model and codecs and write them to a file, however, I can't seem to find what my "model" is because none of the postings have anything about Lenovo laptops. Here is the command they all asked for:

With that info, how do I get the model, and how do I get my speakers to stop playing when headphones are plugged in. Also, I don't have any software installed like pulse audio either, so it's not that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pass Microphone Through To Speakers?

Nov 8, 2010

A bit of background: I have a single set of Logitech Z-5500s and a Xonar D2X on my main computer. I have one other system currently ( sometimes two ), set up in a loop using optical in/out. This system uses analog out to communicate to the Logitech Z-5500s and, when on Windows, feeds a high quality bluetooth headset's input out it's own optical out down the ring so that Dragon Naturally Speaking works on all the systems. ( Since you can't listen to music / play sound effects and use Dragon at the same time, I don't get an infinite loop / digital feedback effect which is REALLY neat to listen to sometime. )

It's a pretty complicated setup. My Windows 7 installation is down due to hard drive failure, so I fixed Grub up and hopped on to Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit edition. So! What I need to get my sound working again, sans the overcomplicated headset part, is a way for my Ubuntu system to play its digital input / SPDIF input on its analog output. Nothing more.

Googling gets me a bunch of stuff meant for music recording that often has high latency. I need this to be minimal latency and because my Ubuntu rig is meant as a CGI workstation and ONLY a CGI workstation installation, I need it to be something with minimal maintenance in updates and minimal resource usage.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype Can't Find The Microphone

Jul 12, 2010

Everything works outside of Skype. Speakers work in Skype, but the microphone stays dead. I've dumped Pulseaudio, made sure volume is up in Alsa, rebooted, but Skype still lists Pulseaudio as what it's using! How do I get its tiny mind to use something else? There was also a thread saying an earlier version of Skype, 2.1.0.47, used to work, but I can't find a 64-bit version of that. I've got the 32-bit version which I could run in a 32-bit ubuntu in virtualbox, but fergawdssake there has to be a better way!How do I make sure the system isn't still somehow using Pulseaudio? I did purge it. It should be gone. Output of various system specs:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Not Working In Skype?

Jan 11, 2011

I had difficulty getting my internal microphone -

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC272 Analog [ALC272 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I was able to get it to work in the Sound Recorder Application and in the System Testing function, but when I do the Skype Test Call, or call someone with Skype, while I can hear the other person perfectly well, my microphone does not appear to work at all, so it is a strictly one way conversation.

I've made sure with the ALSA Mixer that everything is turned on, and all my sound settings are fine, but microphone won't work in Skype.

However, since the fresh install, I have not been able to capture any sound from my laptop's microphone. This is weird because it used to work fine with OpenSuse 11.2 before I had to re-install the same OS again. Additionally I can assure that there are no issues with the hardware since it works fine with Windows 7. I have tried almost everything, but in vain.
