I have a problem making work a webcam. At the begining, after the instalation of 10.04 in a new laptop, the webcam did not work but with a lsusb I see that the webcam was Webcam 5986:0241 acer. I was not able to config neither use the webcam with any application. After lots of test and forums reading I could not do my webcam to work, and now when I do a lsusb my webcam does not appear.

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

Has anyone ever streamed video and audio using VLC before? Try as I might, nothing seems to work (get garbled video or lots of buffer underrun messages from VLC server). The videolan website claims that all the documentation on streaming is outdated too, so there's no help there.

Basically the webcam shows up in the list but clicking test does nothing, it just sits there. The webcam works perfectly in cheese.
I used too solve this problem by doing the following
type
Code:
Quote:
sudo gedit /usr/local/bin/skype
and paste the following 2 line
[Code].....
But this doesn't seem too work now, not since I reinstalled ubuntu.
NOTE: I am using the 64bit release.

I have a crappy usb UVC webcam (iCan brand), but I don't really know how to get it working? Do I need to install any drivers? What software would I use to get it to work? Do I need to enable anything? It doesn't seem to be showing video if I open skype, although it does detect that I have something on /dev/video0, and lsusb gives:Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0ac8:332d Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. Vega USB 2.0 Camera

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS one week ago without any problems on my Packard Bell EasyNote MX67-P-023 notebook.
Everything works fine except my webcam "USB 2.0 Camera"
lsusb: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0402:5602 ALi Corp. Video Camera Controller
In programs like aMsn, Emesene, or Cheese it's recognized as "USB 2.0 Camera"
For example(I'm translating menus from italian) in aMSN->preferences->Other->Audio Video:
- select device box: "v4l2: USB 2.0 Camera"
- select channel box:" ALi m5602"
- and in the video box where image should appear: "unable capture from device"
In the other programs it shows a completely blank screen, or sometimes a blank screen with some strange uncomprensible white-grey stripes.

My Winger has just given me a Web Cam that he got as a present, (An Asda Special, 10.00), he could not get it to work on his Vista Machine (Yes he is not enlightened yet, but he is tempted), I can access it through Cheese, choppy to say the least, probably due to the price, hence question "What is the best App for Webcams, bearing in mind it is a cheapo.

I am a recent convert to Ubuntu 10.10 from Vista. I work from home and do all of my work via remote login and video conferencing through Skype. In Vista, I could use my DV Camcorder as a webcam which, in turn, gave me video for Skype. In Vista, I used a program call "Tracker Cam" which I could run, and then it would act like a video driver for Skype and presto, I had perfect video in Skype.
Now that I am in Ubuntu, I am trying to achieve the same thing. I can hook up my DV Camcorder (A Sony Handycam HDR-HC5) and see the live video through Kino. However, this doesn't help me with Skype. I still can't enable video, or select a video device in Skype. I have Googled this up and down with no leads.
So, I am wondering if anyone has done this with Skype (or other programs) to get their DV Camcorders acting like webcams for video calls or is this just one of those things that won't work in Ubuntu?

Logitech 9000 pro.
I need 30 fps so I can splice into existing video.
I am using this script.
Code:
Even though I have set 'fps' to 30, I only get between 14 and 16. Several thread on the internet tell me that UVC in only capable of 15 fps in 640x480 mode.
Is there some way to make the camera (ID 046d:0809 Logitech, Inc.) work as something OTHER than a UVC type camera? Is there a code snippet to work with?
I have no problems with getting the camera to work with any of the apps in the Ubuntu reposit. The script above records video and audio great, just not 30 fps.
The video I will be splicing into will be shot with a video recorder and windows software. If it is a USB hookup, will it have the same constraints of UVC at 15 fps. IIRC, it is the USB that has the compression problem that limit it to 15 fps.
